AT&T customer service number: how to talk to a real person
We called AT&T wireless customer service four times for this guide. Two calls never got past the voice system, one hit our own time limit on hold, and one reached a live representative after 44 minutes. Here are the recordings, the route that worked, and what the representative said.
The short answer: the AT&T customer service number for wireless bill and account help is 1-800-331-0500 (AT&T writes it 800.331.0500). An automated voice system answers, not a person, and it won't put you through until it has a reason for your call. On our call that reached someone, we said we had a billing question, chose "explanation of charges," said we had no account number, picked "personal," turned down a texted link, and asked for a representative. The system quoted a 24 to 36 minute hold, and a live AT&T representative answered 44 minutes 30 seconds into the recording.
AT&T's Wireless support page lists the number in its "Contact us" box: "Bill & account, 800.331.0500," open "M - F, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. CT" and "Sa - Su, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. CT." The representative we reached gave longer hours for live agents (see below).
Here's what got us from the voice system to a person:
- Call 1-800-331-0500. "Welcome to AT&T," then "Para español oprima el ocho."
- It asks what you need ("Hi, what can I do for you?" or "What's the issue you're calling about?"). Give a specific reason in the menu's own terms. We said we had a general billing question.
- "How can I help with your bill? You can say something like make a payment, explanation of charges, or my bill is too high." We said "explanation of charges." Don't say "pay" or "pay my bill" (see below).
- It asks for "the account number or phone number on the account." We had none, and it said "That's fine."
- "A personal or business account?" We said personal.
- It offered to text a link that explains charges. We said we'd rather speak to a representative. "Let me find someone to help you."
- It offered a callback (press 1), to end the call (press 2), or to keep holding (press 3). Our caller didn't press a key, and we stayed in the queue.
- "Current hold time is between 24 minutes and 36 minutes from now." Hold music and ads, then a person.
What the representative told us (her answers, not AT&T policy we checked):
- Fastest way to a person: "You're speaking with a live agent right now, so calling this phone number would be the fastest way to do it."
- Live-agent hours: "Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central Time, and Saturday and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central." That's not what att.com lists (both are below).
- What to have ready: "their account number available, as well as their four to six digit PIN number, which is the passcode to get into their account."
- Credits: "Normally we say with credits, you wanna expect to see them on your bill within one to three billing cycles," though "that can differ just depending on the severity of the case."
Three lessons from four calls:
- Give a specific reason. When we only said "representative" or "a general question," the system said "I do need a reason for your call to keep going. Without it, I may have to end this call."
- Don't say "pay." Saying "pay my bill" got us a payment web address and a goodbye, not a person.
- Plan for a long hold. Ours was about 43 minutes from "Let me find someone to help you" to a live voice. On an earlier call the same day, the system quoted 26 to 39 minutes.
We called on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, with call4me placing the calls. The call that reached a person started at about 4:00 pm Pacific (6:00 pm Central). These were general questions for this guide, not about any AT&T account, and we gave no account number or PIN. This page is what we heard.
Listen to the call that reached a person
The whole call, 47 minutes 39 seconds, including the full hold. Three short silences: under a second for the representative's first name when she introduces herself, about a second and a half where our caller said whose assistant it was, and about a second for that same name later. Nothing else is muted or cut.
Jump to a moment:
- 0:05 "Welcome to AT&T"
- 0:14 "Hi, what can I do for you?"
- 0:21 We say we have a general billing question
- 0:30 "How can I help with your bill? You can say something like make a payment, explanation of charges, or my bill is too high"
- 0:38 We say "explanation of charges"
- 0:44 "What's the account number or phone number on the account?"
- 0:57 "A personal or business account?"
- 1:06 It offers to text a link that explains charges
- 1:16 "I'd rather speak to a representative, if possible"
- 1:23 "Let me find someone to help you"
- 1:38 The callback offer: press 1 for a callback, 2 to end the call, 3 to hold
- 2:14 "Current hold time is between 24 minutes and 36 minutes from now"
- 2:29 "Heavy call volumes which may result in a delay of more than 10 minutes"
- 7:51 Hold message about the AT&T app and "Andy, our new AI assistant"
- 44:30 A live representative answers
- 45:47 "Calling this phone number would be the fastest way to do it"
- 46:19 Live-agent hours
- 46:38 What to have ready: account number and PIN
- 47:08 Credits: "within one to three billing cycles"
The first live words, at 44:30:
Representative: Thank you for calling AT&T. My name is [name removed]. Who am I speaking with today?
When AT&T customer service is open
These don't match, so here are both.
| Source | Monday to Friday | Saturday and Sunday |
|---|---|---|
| att.com Wireless support, "Bill & account" | 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central | 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central |
| The representative, for live agents | 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central | 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central |
We didn't ask her which line or team her hours cover, and we didn't test calling outside att.com's listed hours. If you want to be safe, call inside the att.com hours. Our successful call was at 6:00 pm Central on a Tuesday, inside both.
How long the AT&T hold is
Across our calls on October 13, 2026:
| Call (Pacific time) | What the system quoted | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 11:53 am | "Between 26 minutes and 39 minutes" | Our own 30 minute time limit ended the call while it was still on hold |
| 4:00 pm | "Between 24 minutes and 36 minutes" | A person answered at 44:30 into the recording, about 42 minutes after the quote |
Both times, the system also offered a callback before the hold: "We are experiencing longer than normal wait times. For your convenience, we'd like to offer you the chance to schedule a callback for a later time. With a callback, you also receive the benefit of text message updates." If you don't want to sit on hold, press 1 at that prompt. We didn't try it, so we can't say how long the callback took.
For how AT&T compares with other places we've called, see our hold times by company.
The call that said "pay my bill"
Our second try, at about 2:55 pm Pacific, 2 minutes 1 second, unedited. The system asked for a reason and warned it might end the call, then listed "new service, can't make or receive calls, activate a device, or pay my bill." Our caller picked "pay my bill." The system read out a payment web address and hung up.
- 0:18 "What's the issue you're calling about?"
- 0:21 We say "General question"
- 0:40 "What's the account number or phone number on the account?"
- 0:53 "Your cell phone, landline, phone advanced, or digital phone?"
- 1:14 "I'm here to help, but I do need a reason for your call to keep going. Without it, I may have to end this call"
- 1:26 "You can say things like new service, can't make or receive calls, activate a device, or pay my bill"
- 1:35 We say "Pay my bill"
- 1:43 "To pay your bill online without signing in, go to att.com slash fast pay SMS." Then "Thank you for calling AT&T. Have a great day," and the call ends.
If you do want to pay without signing in, that's the route AT&T itself gave. If you want a person, don't use the word "pay."
The call with a vague reason
Our third try, at about 3:30 pm Pacific, 1 minute 11 seconds, unedited. Our caller said "Representative" at the first prompt. The system still asked for an account number, a product and the account type, then said "I'm here to help, but I do need a reason for your call to keep going. Without it, I may have to end this call." Our caller started to answer "it's a general question," and then our call dropped on our side because of a technical problem in our own voice system. AT&T didn't hang up on this one, so we don't know what it would have done next. It's here for the warning, which is the same one we heard on the call above.
- 0:19 "Please say what you are calling about"
- 0:22 We say "Representative"
- 0:27 "I understand, but first, what's the account number or phone number on the account?"
- 0:41 "Please tell me which product are you calling about"
- 1:00 "I do need a reason for your call to keep going. Without it, I may have to end this call"
- 1:09 Our caller starts to answer, and the recording ends
Our first call of the day, at 11:53 am Pacific, used "Wireless" and "Personal" and reached the hold queue. It was capped by us at 30 minutes and never reached a person, so we haven't published that recording.
The AT&T phone menu, step by step
It's a conversational voice system. You can answer in full sentences. The only keypad options we heard were 8 for Spanish and 1, 2 or 3 at the callback offer.
- Call 1-800-331-0500. "Welcome to AT&T. Calls are recorded for quality and the purposes stated in our privacy notice." Then "Para español oprima el ocho."
- The open question. On different calls it said "Hi, what can I do for you?", "What's the issue you're calling about?" and "Please say what you are calling about."
- The account number. "What's the account number or phone number on the account?" We had none each time and it carried on.
- The product, if it doesn't know yet. "Which product are you calling about?" or "Your cell phone, landline, phone advanced, or digital phone?" On our billing call it didn't ask.
- "A personal or business account?"
- If it still doesn't have a reason: "I'm here to help, but I do need a reason for your call to keep going. Without it, I may have to end this call." Then "Tell me how I can help with your mobile phone service. You can say things like new service, can't make or receive calls, activate a device or pay my bill."
- On a billing reason, it offers to text a link instead. Saying you'd rather speak to a representative got "Let me find someone to help you."
- The callback offer, then the hold estimate, then hold music with ads for the AT&T Guarantee, the AT&T app, ActiveArmor, HomeTech and Unlimited Your Way, on a loop.
We didn't try "explanation of charges" with a real account, "my bill is too high," "can't make or receive calls," or any of the other options, so we can't say where each one leads.
What to have ready
The representative said to have your account number and your 4 to 6 digit PIN, "which is the passcode to get into their account." The hold message also says you can "authenticate your account when calling in by allowing us to send a secure push notification to your device" if you have the AT&T app. We didn't test either, since our questions weren't about an account.
Other AT&T wireless numbers
From the same att.com Wireless support page, "Other contact options," checked October 13, 2026. We only called 1-800-331-0500.
| Line | Number | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| New service | 888.333.6651 | Mon to Fri 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT, Sat and Sun 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT |
| Support for travel abroad | +1.314.925.6925 | 24/7 |
| Disability resources | TTY 866.241.6567, voice 866.241.6568 | Mon to Fri 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT, Sat 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT |
| FirstNet | 800.574.7000 | 24/7 |
AT&T's Contact us page says to "select a service to find helpful tips, chat options, and customer service numbers," and the site's header has a "Search or chat" button. The hold message says the AT&T app has "chat based support from Andy, our new AI assistant." We didn't try chat.
Things we didn't test
- Pressing 1 for a callback. It was offered on both calls that reached the queue.
- Calling with a real account number, or verifying with the app's push notification.
- Calling outside att.com's listed hours, to check the representative's longer hours.
- Chat on att.com or in the AT&T app.
How we made these recordings
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. The brief for all four calls was to reach a person on AT&T's wireless line, ask general questions for this guide, and give no account or personal details.
What went wrong on our side:
- Call 1 was capped by us. Our caller had a 30 minute time limit, which ended the call on hold. AT&T's own estimate that time was 26 to 39 minutes.
- Call 2 picked "pay my bill" from the menu's list because it was trying to give any reason. That's a self-service route.
- Call 3 dropped on our side right after the system asked for a reason.
- Call 4 worked because our caller led with a billing question, picked a billing option from the menu's own examples, and asked for a person when offered a text link.
We've had quicker routes at other carriers: see Verizon customer service, T-Mobile's customer service number and Xfinity's customer service number. For more recorded calls, see the companies we've called.
Have your agent make this call
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call AT&T customer service at 1-800-331-0500, inside 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central on weekdays or 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central on weekends. When the voice system asks why I'm calling, give a specific reason in its terms: [for example, "a billing question," then "explanation of charges"]. Don't say "pay" or "pay my bill." If it offers to text a link, say I'd rather speak to a representative. [If you want a callback: press 1 when it offers one, for my number. / Otherwise: wait on hold, which can take 45 minutes or more.] When a person answers, ask [your question]. Never read out my PIN or passcode; ring me to join if they need it, and don't change, cancel or buy anything unless I've said to.

The transcript follows the recording. "AT&T" is the automated voice system and its recorded messages. "Representative" is the live person. "Caller" is the call4me agent. Names are silenced in the audio and shown in brackets here. The hold loop of ads repeats about four times; we show it once.
0:05 AT&T: Welcome to AT&T. Calls are recorded for quality and the purposes stated in our privacy notice.
0:12 Caller: Hi, hello?
0:14 AT&T: Hi, what can I do for you?
0:21 Caller: Hi, I'm calling with just a general billing question for a consumer guide, like some info on wireless support and how to reach a live agent.
0:30 AT&T: How can I help with your bill? You can say something like make a payment, explanation of charges, or my bill is too high.
0:38 Caller: Explanation of charges.
0:44 AT&T: So I can help you. What's the account number or phone number on the account?
0:48 Caller: I don't have one. This is just a general question, not about my account.
0:57 AT&T: That's fine. Which are you calling about? A personal or business account?
1:02 Caller: Personal.
1:06 AT&T: Okay, hold on a minute. Questions about charges on your bill? I can send you a link with information that explains them. Is it okay to text it to you?
1:16 Caller: I'd rather speak to a representative, if possible.
1:23 AT&T: Let me find someone to help you. One moment, please, while I handle your request.
1:38 AT&T: We are experiencing longer than normal wait times. For your convenience, we'd like to offer you the chance to schedule a callback for a later time. With a callback, you also receive the benefit of text message updates. To receive a callback as soon as possible, press 1. To end this call and not schedule a callback for a later time, press 2. To decline and hold for a representative, press 3.
[Our caller didn't press a key.]
2:04 AT&T: I'm sorry, your response... Calls are recorded for quality and the purposes stated in our privacy notice. Please stay on the line for the next available representative. Current hold time is between 24 minutes and 36 minutes from now.
2:23 AT&T: One moment while I get an agent to help you.
2:29 AT&T: All of our service representatives are currently helping other customers. We are experiencing heavy call volumes which may result in a delay of more than 10 minutes before being connected to a representative.
[Hold music.]
4:10 AT&T: Thanks for your patience. Please continue to hold, or if you prefer, you can go to att.com and pay your bill, order new phone service, or make changes to your existing service. That's att.com.
[Hold music, with recorded ads that repeat until the representative answers.]
7:51 AT&T recording: The My AT&T app is now the AT&T app, with a simplified experience and even more powerful features. Manage your devices, connections, and usage, and get chat-based support from Andy, our new AI assistant. You can also authenticate your account when calling in by allowing us to send a secure push notification to your device. If you have the app, log in to see the new features. If not, search for AT&T app in your phone's app store and download it. Or go to att.com slash AT&T app. Data rates may apply.
9:57 AT&T recording: Sick of spam calls? It's not too late to activate the mobile security that's included in your plan. Download the ActiveArmor app, go to call routing, and set up your spam call blocking. [Terms follow.] Learn more at att.com slash ActiveArmor.

13:46 AT&T recording: The choice is yours, guaranteed, with Unlimited Your Way. You can mix and match our best plans. Plus, you can change your plan at any time without any change fees. [...] Ask a representative for more details, or go to att.com slash Unlimited.
15:41 AT&T recording: Did you know AT&T credits your bill for AT&T Fiber, Internet Air, and wireless outages? That's right, and it's all part of the AT&T Guarantee, included for new and existing customers at no extra charge. [...] Learn more at att.com slash Guarantee.
[The same messages repeat, with hold music, from 17:39 to 44:29.]
44:30 Representative: Thank you for calling AT&T. My name is [name removed]. Who am I speaking with today?
44:36 Caller: Hi, [muted: whose assistant our caller is]. I'm just hoping to ask a general question about wireless billing for a consumer guide.
44:47 Representative: I'm sorry, who is this?
44:49 Caller: Oh, I'm calling on behalf of [name removed].
44:55 Representative: Do you have an account number?
44:58 Caller: No, it's not about an account, just general info for a guide.
45:06 Representative: When you say a guide, what do you mean, a guide?
45:10 Caller: Like a consumer guide to help people understand, you know, live agent hours and what to have ready before calling.
45:26 Representative: Okay, in order to be able to send something to him, we have to be able to access his account. Do you have an account information I'd be able to pull up?
45:35 Caller: I don't have any account details. Could you just tell me, in general, how someone reaches a live agent the fastest for wireless questions?
45:47 Representative: You're speaking with a live agent right now, so calling this phone number would be the fastest way to do it.
45:53 Caller: Okay, got it. And what hours are live agents usually available? Like, what time zone do they work in?
46:06 Representative: Yeah, for sure. Let me pull up the hours for you, for our general...
46:14 Caller: Sure, no rush.
46:19 Representative: So it's gonna be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central Time, and Saturday and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central.
46:29 Caller: Perfect, thank you. And generally, what should someone have ready before calling about a billing question?
46:38 Representative: They'll wanna have their account number available, as well as their four to six digit PIN number, which is the passcode to get into their account.
46:47 Caller: Okay, great. And one last thing, how long do billing disputes or credits... how long do... sorry, go ahead.
47:00 Representative: I'm sorry?
47:02 Caller: How long do billing disputes or credits usually take to resolve?
47:08 Representative: It depends on the scenario. Normally we say with credits, you wanna expect to see them on your bill within one to three billing cycles, but that can differ just depending on the severity of the case.
47:20 Caller: That's really helpful, thank you. That's all I needed. Thanks for your help today.
47:27 Representative: Of course, of course. Is there anything else I can help you with?
47:30 Caller: No, that's everything, thanks.
47:33 Representative: Thank you, have a good day.
47:35 Caller: You too, bye.
47:37 Representative: Thanks, bye-bye.
