An AI that calls customer service for you
call4me is an AI that calls customer service for you. ask your AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude or Codex) to call a company about a refund, a bill, a booking or a stuck order, and call4me dials, gets through the phone tree and the hold, talks to the rep and brings back what they said with a transcript, or patches you in when they want the account holder. calls cost $0.25/min from pickup and half that on hold, and unanswered calls are free.
we have called the customer service lines of 71 companies and published the recordings. across the 65 where we timed the wait, the median time to a person was 2:06. an AI or virtual assistant answered first at 21 of the 71, and no call we placed reached a person at Coinbase, Experian, FedEx, Lyft or Uber.
How the call works
the route through the phone tree matters. next to each company below is the route that got our call to a person, and your assistant can put that route in the call's brief.
give it the account details the company will ask for and what it may agree to. if the rep asks something only you know, the question comes back to your assistant mid-call. when a company will only deal with the account holder, ask your assistant to connect you "as soon as a person picks up": your phone rings from your call4me number, you press 1 to join, and the AI caller goes quiet. press * or hang up to hand the call back to it.
Real calls call4me made
recorded calls, each with what was asked, what happened and a transcript:
- get a stalled prescription review moving (Amazon Pharmacy): the representative agreed to mark the pending items as important. she estimated about an hour for review and said an email would follow when they were ready. amazon's "ready to order" email for two of the three arrived 42 minutes after the representative said goodbye.
- follow up on an airline complaint (Etihad Airways, US line): after the phone menu and one transfer, an agent confirmed the email is attached to the existing case and under review, and said the written outcome takes up to 28 days from when the case was opened. the call hit its 10-minute limit while the agent was answering a last question.
- find an online tire order at the tire center (Costco San Francisco): after the order number was read back several times, the tire center found the order, confirmed the tires were there, and said the earliest installation was noon that day. no appointment was booked.
What got us to a person
Time is minutes:seconds from the start of the published recording to the first live person, so it includes the phone menu and the queue.
| Company | Time to a person | What got us through |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | 16:15 | No confirmation number, "I need a representative", then hold |
| PayPal | 4:30 | "General question", "something else", then the keypad menu |
| Venmo | 4:57 | Press 4, 2, 1, 2 (a dispute by phone), then stay on the line when no account is found |
| Amazon Pharmacy | 3:40 | Stating the request; the system transferred us |
| Airbnb | 2:27 | Press 2, say "agent", then press 0 |
| Bank of America | 2:05 | "Agent" three times, then "open a new checking account" |
| T-Mobile | 1:49 | "I don't have one" twice, "representative", then "something else" |
| Cash App | 1:35 | Asking the virtual agent three times for a live representative |
every company we timed, with the transcript line behind each time, is on customer service hold times by company.
The recordings behind this page
- How long it takes to reach a human at 71 companies: we timed 123 calls to 71 customer service lines, and 37 of the 123 never reached a person.
- A $100 JSX voucher by phone: Grok Bot and call4me called JSX Reservations about a delayed flight and got Jem a $100 courtesy travel voucher, valid for one year. Jem on X: "literally zero chance i was going to do that myself"
- Amazon Pharmacy customer care: the representative said she would mark the stuck prescriptions as important, and the "ready to order" email arrived 48 minutes after we dialed.
- Priceline customer service: saying we had no trip number, again and again, reached a live representative 25 minutes 9 seconds into the call.
everything else the AI call assistant does on a call, from voices to the free US number, is on its own page. if you keep putting calls off because they make you anxious, our guide to phone anxiety covers which calls are worth practicing and which are fine to hand off.
