Bank of America customer service: how to reach a person without an account number
We called Bank of America's main number without a card or account number to see if a person would pick up. Here is the phone tree, the phrase that got us through, what the representative told us, and the full 5 minute recording.
The short answer: the Bank of America customer service number is 800.432.1000 (1-800-432-1000). Bank of America's checking and savings contact page lists it for general account information, reporting a lost or stolen ATM or debit card, and opening an account. It's staffed Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET and Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. The Spanish line is 800.688.6086, and from outside the US you can call 1.315.724.4022 collect. The page also says "Your card or account number will be required."
We didn't have one, and this got us to a person anyway:
- At the prompt for your telephone access ID, card, or account number, say "agent". It refused twice with a security message. The third time it moved on.
- When it asks you to "tell me what you're calling about", say "open a new checking account".
- Say "no" when it asks about a business account.
- When it asks for your account number, say you don't have one, then confirm "that's right" when it asks "You said you don't know it?"
It said "Please hold while I connect you", and a representative in Scranton, Pennsylvania answered 2 minutes 5 seconds after the call connected. She told us:
- The fastest way to a person is the app. In the Bank of America mobile app, use Erica and type "connect me to an agent". She said that "pushes them more towards the front of the line."
- Hours depend on the department. "Some departments are 24-7, like fraud and certain servicing departments."
- Callbacks: maybe. She thought "there is some sort of callback option for some of the departments", but said she wasn't sure.
- Have whatever relates to your question ready. "Any pertinent information in regards to what they're discussing."
- Not a customer yet? You can open a checking account online or by phone, "whatever is easier for them."
- A replacement debit card takes "about four to six business days."
We called on Friday, October 16, 2026, at about 3:35 pm Eastern, with call4me asking the questions. This page is what we heard.

The Bank of America phone tree, step by step
- Call 800.432.1000. "Welcome to Bank of America. This call may be recorded."
- "To get started, please say or enter your telephone access ID, card, or account number." Customers enter their number here. Without one, say "agent".
- "For security, you must provide required information to speak with an associate or use the automated service." It played this twice for us, after our first and second "agent". After the third, it moved on.
- "In a few words, please tell me what you're calling about." Say "open a new checking account".
- "Okay. A new checking account. Would you like to open a business account today?" Say no.
- "Please say or enter your full account number." Say you don't have one.
- "You said you don't know it. Is that right?" Say yes, that's right.
- "Please hold while I connect you." Then: "All of our associates are currently assisting other customers. Please stay on the line. Your call will be answered in the order that it was received." Our hold, from "please hold" to a person, was about 30 seconds.
- A representative picks up and asks for your first and last name.
What to have ready
- Your card or account number, if you have one. Bank of America's contact page says it "will be required", and it's the first thing the phone menu asks for.
- Anything related to what you're calling about. That's what the representative told us to have handy.
- The Bank of America app, if you'd rather skip the phone menu. The representative's tip was to ask Erica to "connect me to an agent".
Things that don't work
On October 16, 2026, we called this number twice. On our first call:
- Saying "agent" at the account number prompt got the security message, then the "what you're calling about" prompt.
- Saying "I'm not a customer. I just have a general question" at that prompt got "I will be unable to assist you until your account is securely verified. Please enter your account number."
- Saying "speak to a person" and saying we didn't have an account number didn't get past it. It offered to wait while we looked for the number, asked for it again, and then ended the call: "For the security of your account, I am unable to complete your request until you are able to provide the required information. Please try your call again later when you have this information available."
That call lasted about 4 minutes. Saying "open a new checking account" instead of "general question" is what got us to a person on the second call.
How we made this recording
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For this one, the brief was to reach a person at Bank of America without giving any account details, ask a few general questions for this guide, and note every menu prompt on the way.
Our caller's opening confused the representative. It introduced itself as my assistant doing "a general inquiry about customer service for a consumer guide", and she said "I'm so sorry, I'm a little bit confused." It explained again that we weren't customers, and she answered every question after that. We're not a customer, so we told the menu we wanted to open a new checking account to get through, which is a real option for anyone who isn't a customer yet.
Have your agent make this call
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call Bank of America at 800-432-1000. If I have my card or account number, enter it: [your card or account number]. If not, say "agent" until it asks what I'm calling about. I'm calling about [your reason, or "open a new checking account" if I'm not a customer]. Stay on hold for a person and ask: [your question]. Don't give out my Social Security number.

2:05 Representative: Hello, thank you for calling Bank of America. This is [name removed] in Scranton, Pennsylvania. This call may be monitored and recorded. May I have your first and last name, please?
2:15 Caller: Hi, this is Nick [last name removed]'s assistant calling. We're just doing a general inquiry about customer service for a consumer guide.
2:25 Representative: I'm so sorry. I'm a little bit confused.
2:29 Caller: Oh, yeah, no problem. We're just putting together a consumer guide about how people can reach customer service. We're not customers. We don't need help with any account or anything.
2:47 Representative: So, I mean, they would call from a phone number on our website, or they could use the mobile app.
2:56 Caller: Okay. And what would you say is the fastest way for someone to reach a real person when they call this number?
3:05 Representative: So if they have the mobile app, they can use the feature Erica.
3:11 Caller: Okay.
3:12 Representative: And then they can type in, connect me to an agent. And then that actually pushes them more towards the front of the line and gets to a person.
3:19 Caller: Oh, okay. And is this phone line open 24-7, or what are the hours for talking to a real person?
3:28 Representative: It depends on what's needed. Some departments are 24-7, like fraud and certain servicing departments, but it really just depends.
3:39 Caller: Okay. And if someone calls in, is there an option to get a callback instead of waiting on hold?
3:50 Representative: If your phone has an option where it informs you that somebody's, you know, I know some phones will let you, like, put yourself on hold, and then the phone will notify you when somebody's answered. So some phones do that. And then I think there is some sort of callback option for some of the departments as well, but I'm not entirely sure, to be honest.
4:13 Caller: Okay, no problem. And what would you say someone should have handy when they call? Like, should they have their card or account number or anything like that?
4:26 Representative: Yeah, they should have any pertinent information in regards to what they're discussing.
4:31 Caller: Okay, got it. And if someone isn't a Bank of America customer but wants to open a checking account, can they do it by phone, or would you recommend another way?
4:42 Representative: They could go online, or they can call us. Whatever is easier for them.
4:49 Caller: Perfect. Thank you. And then last question here. If someone loses their debit card, how long does it usually take for a replacement card to arrive?
4:59 Representative: About four to six business days.
5:02 Caller: Okay, that's really helpful. Thanks so much for your time.
5:06 Representative: Yeah, absolutely. Take care.
5:08 Caller: Bye.
