Delta customer service: how to get past the AI assistant to a person

We called Delta's reservations line with general questions and no confirmation number. Here is how the AI voice assistant handed us off, how long the hold took, what the representative said about change fees and eCredits, and the full 18 minute recording.

Nick Khami · · 7 min read

The short answer: the Delta customer service phone number for reservations is 800-221-1212. Delta's Need Help page says: "To speak with a representative about a new or existing reservation, call 800-221-1212," and "You may contact Reservation Sales 24 hours/day, 7 days/week."

The first voice you hear is not a person. It introduces itself as "Delta's AI-powered voice assistant." Here's what got us from it to a live representative, with no confirmation number:

  1. Call 800-221-1212. When the assistant asks why you're calling, say you have a general question for reservations.
  2. It asks what kind of help: "Find an existing reservation, change or cancel a trip, or book a new flight." We said "change or cancel a trip."
  3. It asks for your six-character confirmation number. We said we didn't have one, had a general question, and needed a representative.
  4. "I hear you. Give me a moment. I'll transfer your call now."
  5. It offers to message with a representative ("the wait time is zero minutes") or a callback "within 14 minutes." We said "no thanks" and stayed on hold.
  6. After about 14 minutes of hold, with recorded announcements every couple of minutes: "You are now being connected to a Delta representative."

A live representative answered 16 minutes 15 seconds into the recording, about 16 minutes 20 seconds after we dialed. On our call, the hold lasted about as long as the callback estimate it had offered.

What the representative told us:

We called on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at about 4:03 pm Eastern, with call4me placing the call. This page is what we heard.

Delta 800-221-1212, how to get past the AI voice assistant to a person

Listen to the call

The whole call, 18 minutes 17 seconds, including the hold. One short silence (under half a second) covers the representative's first name. Nothing else is muted or cut.

Jump to a moment:

The Delta phone tree, step by step

It's a voice assistant that asks questions. The only keypad options are at the wait offer, and you can answer that by voice too.

  1. Call 800-221-1212. "Thanks for calling. I'm Delta's AI-powered voice assistant. See delta.com slash AI terms for our terms of use. To get you to the right place, please tell me with as many details as possible why you're calling today."
  2. Say why you're calling. We said "I have a general question for reservations." It answered "Got it. One moment."
  3. "What kind of reservations help do you need? Find an existing reservation, change or cancel a trip, or book a new flight?" We said "change or cancel a trip."
  4. "To pull up the right reservation, can you share your six-character confirmation number?" If you have one, this is where it goes. We didn't, and said so, and asked for a representative.
  5. "I hear you. Give me a moment. I'll transfer your call now." No second attempt to get the number.
  6. The wait offer. "We're experiencing longer than usual wait times. You can choose to message with a representative where the wait time is zero minutes, or to receive a callback when it's your turn within 14 minutes. Please note, standard text and data rates apply." Press 1 for messaging, 2 for a callback, or say "no thanks."
  7. The hold. It asks you to stay on the line after the call for a one-question survey. Then it's mostly music, with recorded announcements about SkyMiles, messaging Delta ("delta.com slash need help" or the Fly Delta app), companion certificates, having your confirmation, ticket or SkyMiles number ready, and free Wi-Fi.
  8. "You are now being connected to a Delta representative." On our call, that was 14 minutes after we said "no thanks".

What the representative said, in detail

We asked three general questions about a Main Cabin domestic ticket. The answers are the representative's, as recorded. We didn't compare them with Delta's published fare rules.

Changing a ticket. "There is no fee to change it, but fare difference goes between what the prices of the ticket as of today compared to the original purchase date look like. And we compared those pricings between the two. If it's lower, then a credit will be issued out for the remaining balance. If it's higher, then that will just have to come from whatever card being used at that point in time."

Canceling. "If you cancel it, it will be for an e-credit. That e-credit will last for a year from the original purchase date. So let's say a ticket was purchased today, you would have till 10-8-2027 to use the new credit, if it's not canceled within 24 hours."

Refunds. "When it comes to refundability, a ticket needs to be canceled 24 hours from the original booking date to get a refund, or purchase a refundable ticket." Her wording was "24 hours from the original booking date"; together with the line before it, we read that as canceling within 24 hours of booking. That reading is ours.

Phone versus online. "No, it'll be the same online as it will be with the agent."

Things we didn't test

How we made this recording

call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For this one, the brief was to reach a Delta reservations representative, ask three general questions, and not log in, give account details, or change anything.

Two things our caller did weren't ideal:

Have your agent make this call

If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:

Call Delta reservations at 800-221-1212. An AI voice assistant answers. Tell it I have a question about [my booking / a new booking]. If it asks for my six-character confirmation number, give it [confirmation number, or say I don't have one and need a representative]. If it offers messaging or a callback, say "no thanks" and stay on hold. When a person answers, ask [your questions]. Don't change, cancel or book anything unless I've said to.

The transcript follows the recording. "Delta assistant" is Delta's AI-powered voice assistant and its recorded messages. "Representative" is the live person. "Caller" is the call4me agent. The representative's first name is silenced in the audio and shown in brackets here. Our caller answered every prompt by voice, and our call log shows no key presses. Key presses wouldn't be audible in the recording anyway.

16:15 Representative: Thank you for calling Delta. This is [name removed] speaking. How may I assist you today?

16:20 Caller: Hi, yeah, I just had a couple general questions about reservations and changes.

16:27 Representative: Okay, what's the general questions?

16:31 Caller: So, for a main cabin domestic ticket, is there a fee to change it? And how is the fare difference handled?

16:41 Representative: There is no fee to change it, but fare difference goes between what the prices of the ticket as of today compared to the original purchase date look like. And we compared those pricings between the two. If it's lower, then a credit will be issued out for the remaining balance. If it's higher, then that will just have to come from whatever card being used at that point in time.

17:10 Caller: Gotcha. And if you cancel instead, do you get an eCredit or a refund? And how long is that eCredit good for?

17:19 Representative: If you cancel it, it will be for an e-credit. That e-credit will last for a year from the original purchase date. So let's say a ticket was purchased today, you would have till 10-8-2027 to use the new credit, if it's not canceled within 24 hours. But that will be a credit standpoint. When it comes to refundability, a ticket needs to be canceled 24 hours from the original booking date to get a refund, or purchase a refundable ticket.

17:58 Caller: Hmm. Okay. And does booking or changing through a phone agent add a fee compared with doing it online?

18:06 Representative: No, it'll be the same online as it will be with the agent.

18:10 Caller: Perfect. That's all I needed. Thanks so much. Bye.

18:15 Caller: Cool.
