United Airlines customer service number: how we reached a person
Call 1 800 864 8331 for United reservations in the US. We asked about flight changes, got through the voice assistant and reached a person after 19 minutes 27 seconds. Hear the call and the route we tested.
The United Airlines customer service number for US reservations is 1 800 864 8331. United lists it as 1 800 UNITED 1 in its official phone help information. On our recorded call, saying "flight change fee" got us past the voice assistant and into the reservations queue. A person answered 19 minutes 27 seconds into the original call.
We made that call on October 1, 2026, at about 4:09 pm Eastern, using call4me. We asked general questions about changing a flight and told the representative we had no trip booked. This guide uses the existing recording from our United flight change article. We checked United's published phone help information again on November 2, but did not make a new call.
The recording proves that this reservations route reached a person on the date tested. It does not establish the route for every department, a typical wait or a completed booking change.
How we reached a live United representative
This was the route for our general flight change question:
- Call 1 800 864 8331. The voice assistant asks why you are calling.
- Describe the issue in a few words. We said "flight change fee". A longer question about Basic Economy and regular Economy fees was not understood.
- Answer the travel region prompt. The menu offered 1 for travel within the United States and Mexico, or 2 otherwise. We pressed 1.
- Choose whether to take the survey. We pressed 2 to decline it.
- Stay in the queue. The system later offered 9 for a voice assisted experience for rebooking after disrupted travel. We stayed on the line because we were asking a general question.
Use the reason and region that match your actual trip. We did not test the disrupted travel option or the route after choosing another region. The phrase we used is evidence of what worked for our inquiry, not a universal shortcut for baggage, refunds or every reservation issue.
Listen to the call
The public recording is 23 minutes 3 seconds, from an original call of 23 minutes 21 seconds. It preserves the hold music, menu prompts and announcements. Three stretches of dead air were shortened by about 18 seconds in total, and two names were silenced in the already published audio.
That editing matters for the timestamps: the representative answers at 19:09 in the recording, after 19:27 of actual elapsed call time.

The live greeting in the recording was:
19:09 United agent: Hi, thank you for calling reservations desk. This is [name removed]. How may I help you?
How long did United keep us waiting?
Our total time to a person was 19 minutes 27 seconds. The time from the transfer announcement to the live greeting was about 18 minutes 10 seconds. The automated estimate had been 10 to 15 minutes.
Those measurements describe one Thursday afternoon call. They are not an average hold time, a promise that calling at that hour is faster or evidence that the same menu still has the same queue. When asked for a faster way to reach someone without a confirmation number, the representative said it depended on the queue.
What should you have ready?
The representative's first question was for our confirmation number. We had none, so she could only answer general questions. For a question about your own trip, have the booking confirmation and a clear description of the issue ready.
If you want to change a flight, identify the flight or date you want instead and ask the representative to check the rules for your ticket before you approve a change. Our original call discussed several fare types, but some answers differed from the United pages checked that day. The flight change guide keeps those differences visible. A general answer from that recording does not establish the price or eligibility of your own change.
Is this the right contact for every United issue?
We tested the reservations desk. For another country or language, start with United's official reservations directory. For delayed, lost or damaged bags, use United's separate bag help page. For feedback about a past trip, use the Customer Care form.
These links are alternative official routes, not additional services we tested. Our call did not verify baggage support, a refund claim, MileagePlus account service or a response to the Customer Care form.
For current phone hours, check the reservations directory for the country and language you need. The number in United's phone help information does not by itself establish the hours of every department.
Have your assistant make your United call
Connect your assistant using the call4me installation guide, then give it the actual issue and the limits of what it may do:
Help me contact United about my trip. Ask what I need resolved and whether I have a confirmation number before calling. Verify the current number using United's official website. Describe my actual issue to the voice assistant, answer the routing questions for my trip and wait for a person if needed. Bring back the answer and any next step. If United needs the traveler to verify the booking, ask me to join. Do not change or cancel a flight, buy a ticket, accept a fee or spend travel credit without my approval.
Calls use your call4me credits. The assistant can handle the menu and hold, but it cannot promise a particular wait or that United will grant a change. For more recorded airline routes, see Alaska Airlines, Delta and the company phone directory.
