United change flight rules: what a United agent told us, and how to reach one

We called United reservations to ask how changing a flight works and what it costs. Here is the phone tree, the three words that got us to a person, what the agent said about Economy, Basic Economy and same-day changes, where united.com says something different, and the recording.

United 1-800-864-8331, how to change a flight and what it costs

The short answer: United change flight rules depend on your ticket. A United reservations agent told us that on a Standard Economy ticket, and on United First, you can change "anytime" and pay the fare difference only. Basic Economy "is the most restrictive ticket": she said a flexibility fee plus the fare difference applies, with the fee depending on the route. united.com says something different about Basic Economy (more below), so check your own ticket before you rely on either.

The United customer service number for reservations and changes is 1-800-864-8331, open "24 hours daily" (united.com). In Spanish it's 1-800-426-5561. This got us to a person:

  1. When the voice assistant asks why you're calling, say "flight change fee". Keep it short: a long sentence got "Sorry, I didn't understand."
  2. Press 1 if you're traveling within the United States and Mexico. Otherwise, press 2.
  3. Press 2 to skip the survey.
  4. Stay on the line. Press 9 only if you need rebooking help for disrupted travel.

The menu estimated "approximately 10 to 15 minutes". A person picked up 19 minutes 27 seconds after dialing: 18 minutes 10 seconds after "Please hold while I transfer you to an agent". The agent told us:

We called on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at about 4:09 pm Eastern, with call4me asking the questions. This page is what we heard.

Listen to the call

The recording is 23 minutes 3 seconds, from a call of 23 minutes 21 seconds. The full hold is in the recording, hold music included, so the agent picks up at 19:09. Use the links below to skip ahead. Three stretches of dead air (about 18 seconds in all) are shortened to about a second, and each is marked in the transcript. Every menu prompt, hold message and the ad are left in. Two short silences cover the agent's first name and my last name.

Key presses don't show up in the recording. Our caller said out loud which key it was pressing.

The United customer service phone tree, step by step

  1. Call 1-800-864-8331. "Thanks for calling United Airlines." A short music jingle plays.
  2. "How can I help you? Please say in a few words why you are calling us today." Our caller said "I just want to ask about changing a flight." The menu answered "I can help you with your question" and asked for a bit more.
  3. Say "flight change fee". Our caller's longer answer got "Sorry, I didn't understand", with the hint "You can say things like book a flight or get flight status." "Flight change fee" got "Please hold while I transfer you to an agent who can assist you."
  4. A recording notice, then: "If you are traveling within the United States and Mexico, please press one. Otherwise, press two." We pressed 1.
  5. A survey offer. "To participate in the survey, please press one. Otherwise, press two." We pressed 2.
  6. "All of our agents are temporarily busy." "Your wait time is approximately 10 to 15 minutes." Hold music, then an ad for the United Explorer Card, then more music.
  7. "We sincerely apologize for the wait." About 4 minutes 10 seconds after the wait estimate, it offered a "no wait voice assisted experience" for rebooking after disrupted travel: "Press nine to immediately be connected to this experience. Otherwise, stay on the line." We stayed on the line.
  8. An agent answers. About 13 more minutes of hold music (the full hold is in the recording), then: "Hi, thank you for calling reservations desk." Her first question was for the confirmation number.

What the agent told us

It depends on the ticket. "With regards to the changes on the reservation, it actually depends on the ticket that you purchase."

Basic Economy. "If you purchase a basic economy ticket, it is the most restrictive ticket. So there's actually a flexibility fee and then a fare difference that would apply upon doing the changes." The flexibility fee "is depending on the route, if it is international or if it is like a domestic flight." She didn't give an amount, and we didn't ask for one.

Standard Economy. "Changes are permitted, so you can change it anytime," paying "the fare difference only."

United First. "It is also the same. It is changeable anytime" with the fare difference.

Same-day changes. She asked whether we meant the same day as booking or the same day as departure. For the day of departure: "Flexibility fee and fare difference will apply for basic economy ticket. And then flexibility fee only if it is standard economy up to the higher cabin." The change can be made "one hour prior to the departure", "either online or via phone call."

By phone or online. "There is no fee for changes on the phone unless it is a new reservation with a booking service fee. But with regards to the changes, no changes fee, ma'am."

Getting through faster. "It's actually depending on the queue, because, you know, we also have a lot of customers also waiting on the line."

What united.com says

We checked the United Airlines change flight pages on united.com on October 1, 2026, the day of the call.

Economy and up, the United change fee. United's flexible booking page says: "If you're flying on an Economy, Economy Plus® or a premium cabin ticket, your change fees are waived for the following: Domestic flights within the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands", plus flights between the U.S. and Mexico, between the U.S. and the Caribbean, and international flights that start in the U.S. Its FAQ says: "You can change your flight as many times as you want without change fees. But, you will have to pay any fare differences that apply each time you change." That matches what the agent told us.

Basic Economy. This is where they disagree. The same page says: "If you're flying on a Basic Economy ticket, you can't change your flight unless you upgrade to Economy or a premium cabin first." The agent told us a flexibility fee plus the fare difference applies. We're showing both. We don't know which one applies to your ticket, so confirm with United before you count on changing a Basic Economy fare.

Same-day changes. United's flight change page says Premier members "may be able to get another flight for free", and: "All other travelers may be able to get another flight within 24 hours of the original flight. You may have to pay a price difference even if the same cabin is available." Flying standby on an earlier flight the same day is free to join. United's list of optional service charges prices "Same-day flight changes" at "Up to $75 per traveler, depending on Premier® status". The agent said Standard Economy and up pay the flexibility fee only. The website says you may also pay a price difference.

Changing by phone. The flight change page says: "You can also change your flight over the phone, but you might be charged a fee." The agent told us there's no fee for changes by phone. The charges page lists ticketing through a United agent at "$25 by phone, $30 at a City Ticket Office, $50 in person at the airport", and the reservations directory says: "To book with an agent, there's a $25 fee by phone". That fits what the agent said about a booking service fee on a new reservation. The charges page also lists "Other flight changes and cancellations" at "From $0 to $1,000 per traveler, based on applicable fare rules".

What to have ready

Things that don't work

On October 1, 2026, at "Please say in a few words why you are calling us today":

Three words, "flight change fee", went straight through to the agent queue.

How we made this recording

call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For this one, the brief was to reach a live United reservations agent, ask how changing a flight works (Economy, Basic Economy, same-day changes, phone versus online), and note every menu prompt and what got through. We had no trip booked and told the agent so.

Have your agent make this call

If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:

Call United at 1-800-864-8331 about changing my flight, confirmation number [confirmation number]. When the voice assistant asks why I'm calling, say "flight change fee". Press 1 if the trip is within the United States and Mexico, otherwise 2, then press 2 to skip the survey, and stay on the line. I'd like to move to [the new flight or date]. Before confirming anything, ask the agent what I'll pay in total (any change or flexibility fee plus the fare difference) and whether doing it by phone costs more than on united.com. Write down exactly what they say.

Read the full transcript

The transcript follows the edited recording. "Caller" is the call4me agent. "United menu" is the automated phone system. The agent's first name and my last name are silenced in the audio and shown in brackets here. Key presses aren't audible. Short acknowledgements from our caller while the agent was talking ("okay", "mm-hmm") are left out. The full hold is in the recording. Three silences are shortened, and each is marked.

0:00 United menu: Thanks for calling United Airlines.

About 3 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

[Our call log shows the caller said "Hi! This is Nick" around here. It isn't audible on the recording.]

A short music jingle.

0:14 United menu: How can I help you? Please say in a few words why you are calling us today. For example, you can...

0:24 Caller: I just want to ask about changing a flight.

0:27 United menu: Okay. I can help you with your question. In a few words, please tell me a bit more. You can say things like...

0:40 Caller: I want to ask what the fee is to change a flight, like for basic economy versus regular economy.

0:47 United menu: Sorry, I didn't understand. In a few words, please tell me a bit more. You can say things like book a flight or get flight status.

[Our call log shows short replies from the caller ("Sure", "Yeah", "Okay") while the menu was giving its examples, which may be why those prompts stop mid-sentence. They aren't audible on the recording.]

0:59 Caller: Flight change fee.

About 12 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

1:01 United menu: Please hold while I transfer you to an agent who can assist you. Your call may be monitored and recorded for quality and training purposes by United and its third-party service providers. By providing your information to a United representative, you agree to our privacy policy, available on united.com.

1:23 United menu: If you are traveling within the United States and Mexico, please press one. Otherwise, press two.

1:31 Caller: Okay, I'm gonna press one to stay in the U.S.

1:33 United menu: We would appreciate if you could provide us your feedback. Would you like to participate in a brief survey about the customer service you experienced today? You will be called or texted after completing your call with United. Text message fees may apply. To participate in the survey, please press one. Otherwise, press two.

1:54 Caller: Okay, I'll press two to skip that.

1:57 United menu: All of our agents are temporarily busy. Please remain on the line and your call will be answered in the order in which it was received. Your wait time is approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

Hold music until 2:21.

2:21 United menu: Make travel easier and more rewarding with the United Explorer Card. Enjoy up to 75,000 bonus miles after qualifying activities. Earn 5,000 of those miles upon approval when you apply by phone. Get added travel value like a free first checked bag, priority boarding, United Club passes, and more. As a cardmember, you'll earn more miles on United flights, and even more when you purchase tickets with the card. Plus, save 10% or more on United award flights booked with miles. Ask your agent about how cardmembers can earn more miles, explore card benefits, and how you can get $100 in United travel credits.

Hold music until 6:01.

About 3 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

6:02 United menu: We sincerely apologize for the wait. Are you calling for rebooking assistance due to disrupted travel? We have a no wait voice assisted experience that can solve many issues and still enables you to speak with an agent if needed. Press nine to immediately be connected to this experience. Otherwise, stay on the line.

6:22 Caller: I'll just stay on the line.

Hold music until 19:07.

19:09 United agent: Hi, thank you for calling reservations desk. This is [name removed]. How may I help you?

19:14 Caller: Hi, yeah, this is Nick [last name removed]'s assistant. I just had a couple quick questions about changing flight.

19:21 United agent: Okay, I do understand that you wanted to do a clarification first before doing changes on the reservation. No worries, I'm here now to help you. May I have the confirmation number, please, so I can pull up the details of the flight and I can check and provide the information?

19:37 Caller: We don't actually have a trip booked right now. I'm just trying to find out how the change fees work before booking.

19:44 United agent: Okay, I understand. Okay, so here's actually a thing, okay? With regards to the changes on the reservation, it actually depends on the ticket that you purchase. So if you purchase a basic economy ticket, it is the most restrictive ticket. So there's actually a flexibility fee and then a fare difference that would apply upon doing the changes. So the flexibility fee is depending on the route, if it is international or if it is like a domestic flight. And then for the second type of the ticket, which is a standard economy ticket, so changes are permitted, so you can change it anytime, as long as you will going to pay for the fare difference only. And then for the, you know, United First Class, it is also the same. It is changeable anytime as long as you will going to pay for the fare difference.

20:39 Caller: Okay. And how does a same-day change work, and what does that cost?

20:45 United agent: Okay, even... it actually depends still on the ticket. Okay? For the... yeah, what we're going to happen for the basic economy, if it is same-day change. I mean, you will going to change it same day as you book the flight, or is it same day of the departure?

21:05 Caller: Same day of, like, departure.

21:10 United agent: Okay, so with the same-day departure, ma'am, okay, it's actually still the same, all right? Flexibility fee and fare difference will apply for basic economy ticket. And then flexibility fee only if it is standard economy up to the higher cabin. So as long as you are going to change your flight prior, or one hour prior to the departure, we can actually do the changes. It's either online or via phone call.

21:44 Caller: All right, cool. Is there an extra fee for changing by phone compared to online or the app?

21:52 United agent: Uh, no, ma'am. There is no fee for changes on the phone unless it is a new reservation with a booking service fee. But with regards to the changes, no changes fee, ma'am.

22:05 Caller: Perfect. And what's the fastest way to reach an agent at this number if we don't have a confirmation number yet?

22:14 United agent: Regarding on this one, it's actually depending on the queue, because, you know, we also have a lot of customers also waiting on the line. So it actually depends on the queue as well.

22:27 Caller: Of course. That's fine. Thanks for walking me through that.

22:32 United agent: You're much welcome, ma'am. Okay, I hope that I was able to provide you a clear information regarding on your concern of the changes on the flight. And I just want to make sure, ma'am, that I take care of what you needed for today.

22:48 Caller: Yeah, you did. That's all we needed. Thanks so much.

22:51 United agent: Oh, that's good to hear, ma'am. Thank you so much as well, ma'am, for your time and patience. And if that's going to be all for today, thanks for calling United.

22:59 Caller: Awesome, thanks again. Bye.

23:02 United agent: Bye.
