FPL phone number: how we reached a person at Florida Power & Light to ask about starting service

We called FPL customer service five times to ask how starting electric service works for someone new to FPL. Four calls stayed in the voice menu. On the fifth, one route got us to an agent, who told us what you need, how fast service is connected, and how the deposit is decided. All five recordings, the exact route, and the phone tree.

FPL phone number 1-888-988-8249, how we reached a person at Florida Power & Light

The short answer: the FPL phone number for customer service is 1-888-988-8249. FPL lists its hours as "Mon. to Fri., 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sat., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m." To report an outage, call 1-800-468-8243, "Anytime" (fpl.com). In Northwest Florida the number is 1-888-326-4853, Monday to Friday 7 am to 6 pm and Saturday 8 am to 4 pm (fpl.com).

To reach a person, go through the new service signup. This is the route that worked on our fifth call:

  1. Say "Residential".
  2. At "Please say or enter the FPL account number or your social security number", say "Open a new account". If it doesn't catch that, it reads out keys: press 3 to open a new account.
  3. "Do you have an existing account that you would like to transfer to a new address?" Say "No".
  4. "To begin new service, we will walk you through a three-step process." Say "Get started".
  5. At "What's the zip code?", our caller said "Agent" ("Sorry. That option is not available.") and then "Representative". FPL read a safety notice and said "your information has been saved for the next step."
  6. Our caller said "Speak to a person", and FPL said "Your call is being routed to the next available agent." An agent answered about 10 seconds later.

Asking for a representative anywhere else got "Sorry. That option is not available." It took us five calls to find this route.

What the agent said: you can call any time, "even the same day", because FPL connects service remotely, which "takes between a couple of minutes to four hours." To start service they need your name, Social Security number, phone number, email address and the service address. The Social Security number is for a credit review, which decides whether you pay a deposit. If you do, it's due 10 days after the account is established.

We made these calls on Thursday, October 1, 2026, with call4me placing them. We had no new address to start service at. We only asked how it works.

Listen to the call that reached a person

This is the fifth call, at about 2:54 pm Eastern. The recording is 4 minutes 53 seconds, from a call of 5 minutes 17 seconds. Two stretches of dead air are shortened to about a second each, and both are marked in the transcript: about 5 seconds after "One sec" in the menu, and about 19 seconds after the goodbyes, before the agent checked if we were still there.

Muted, with short silences at the same spots: the agent's first name, in her greeting, and my last name. Nothing else is muted.

The phone tree, step by step

Times are minutes into the recording.

  1. 0:00, "Florida Power and Light. Para español, marque nueve." Then: if it's life threatening, call 911.
  2. 0:10, "What type of account are you calling about? Residential, or business." Or say "help me decide." We said residential.
  3. 0:26, a wait time notice, on all five calls: "Due to heavy call volume, we are currently experiencing long wait times for a representative." It suggests the automated system or fpl.com.
  4. 0:49, "Please say or enter the FPL account number or your social security number. You can also say, open a new account." Our caller said "Open a new account" (that's in the call log; on the recording it's hard to make out). FPL said "I still didn't get that" and read out keys: "If you don't have it, press one. Or if you need a moment to find it, press two. Or to open a new account, press three. To report an emergency, like a downed wire or outage, press four."
  5. 1:30, "Okay, start service." Our caller had said "One sec", then about 6 seconds of quiet, then this. We can't tell what did it. Keypad presses don't show up in our recordings, and the call log doesn't list them, so our caller may have pressed 3. If you get the keys, press 3.
  6. 1:32, "Do you have an existing account that you would like to transfer to a new address?" Say no.
  7. 1:40, "To begin new service, we will walk you through a three-step process. If you have everything you need, including your new service address, say, get started." Or "hold on", "repeat that" or "main menu".
  8. 2:02, "Get started." FPL: "Let's get started with step one, where I would ask you questions about the service address. I'll need to know the address where you'd like the service to be connected. First, what's the zip code?"
  9. 2:19, "Agent." "Sorry, that option is not available. Let's try again."
  10. 2:26, "Representative." FPL went on without the ZIP code: "Please make sure it is safe to turn power on at your location by ensuring that major appliances are turned off or by turning your breakers to the off position. Also, please make sure we have safe, unobstructed access to your meter by opening any locked gates and securing any dogs or animals on the premises. All right, this part of the process is complete, and your information has been saved for the next step."
  11. "Speak to a person." This is in the call log right after that notice. It isn't audible on the recording.
  12. 2:56, "Your call is being routed to the next available agent and will be recorded for quality assurance." Then the start of another wait time notice, cut off when the agent answered at 3:07.

One call can't tell you which words did the work. We don't know whether "representative" and "speak to a person" moved it along, or whether the signup goes to an agent at this point anyway. What we know is that this sequence reached a person and nothing else we tried did.

What the FPL agent told us

The agent asked for the address where we wanted service connected. We said we didn't have one yet, and asked what a new customer needs.

FPL's deposit page says the deposit is "due once the account is opened, sometimes before your service is connected". The agent said 10 days after. Both are below, as each one said it.

What to have ready before you call

Or skip the call and start service online.

What didn't work

Our first four calls never reached a person. On October 1, 2026:

Here are all four, oldest first.

12:32 pm: the new account loop

5 minutes 4 seconds. Our caller said "open a new account", then kept going back to the main menu to ask how starting service works. Every time, FPL sent it to the same three-step signup. Three silences (about 10 seconds in total) are shortened. The hold music after "hold on" is left in.

12:40 pm: "representative" twice

4 minutes 31 seconds. Our caller said "representative" at the account prompt and again at the main menu. Four silences (about 13 seconds in total) are shortened.

1:13 pm: "agent" and the full list of options

3 minutes 41 seconds. Our caller said "I don't have it" at the account prompt, then asked for a representative and an agent. Three silences (about 9 seconds in total) are shortened.

2:51 pm: the ZIP code lookup hangs up

2 minutes 3 seconds, from a call of 2 minutes 18 seconds. Our caller said "I don't have it" to every question. Three silences while the menu waited (about 14 seconds in total) are shortened. Nothing is muted.

How the FPL deposit works

From FPL's residential deposit page, checked on October 1, 2026.

How we made these recordings

call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. These were our own test calls. We had no move and no new address. We asked our caller to reach a person and find out what starting service takes, how far ahead to call, any connection fee, and how the deposit is decided, how much it is and when it's due. On the fifth call we also asked it to note every prompt and exactly which words or keys got through to a person.

Have your agent make this call

If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:

Call FPL at 1-888-988-8249 to start electric service at [new address], starting [date]. I don't have an FPL account. At the menu, say "residential", then "open a new account" (or press 3 if it reads out keys), "no" to transferring an account, and "get started". If you need a person, say "representative" and then "speak to a person". When they ask for my Social Security number, ring me so I can join and give it myself. Ask whether a deposit is required, how much it is and when it's due, and whether there's a connection fee, and write down exactly what FPL says.

The transcript follows the edited recording. "Caller" is the call4me agent. "FPL" is the automated phone system until 3:07, then the agent. Muted words are shown in brackets. Each shortened silence is marked.

0:00 FPL: Florida Power and Light. Para español, marque nueve.

0:09 Caller: Hmm, one sec.

0:10 FPL: If you're calling about a life-threatening issue, please call 911 immediately. To get started, what type of account are you calling about? Residential or business? Or say, help me decide.

0:23 Caller: Residential.

0:26 FPL: Okay. Due to heavy call volume, we are currently experiencing long wait times for a representative. For non-emergencies, you can use our automated phone system or FPL dot com, which can be accessed through your mobile device for many inquiries. Or you may wish to call back later. Thanks for your patience.

0:49 FPL: First, let me get some information. Please say or enter the FPL account number or your social security number. You can also say, open a new account.

1:00 Caller: Open a new account. (From the call log. On the recording it's hard to make out: both transcribers heard "...need a new account." The call log also has "Okay, I'm listening.")

1:04 FPL: Sorry, say or enter... I still didn't get that. Enter your FPL account number or your social security number. If you don't have it, press one. Or if you need a moment to find it, press two. Or to open a new account, press three. To report an emergency, like a downed wire or outage, press four.

1:28 Caller: One sec.

About 5 seconds of silence on the line is cut here. If our caller pressed a key, it would be in this gap: keypad presses don't show up in the recording.

1:30 FPL: Okay, start service. Do you have an existing account that you would like to transfer to a new address?

1:37 Caller: No.

1:40 FPL: To begin new service, we will walk you through a three-step process. If you have everything you need, including your new service address, say, get started. Or if you need a moment to find it, say, hold on. To hear that again, say, repeat that. If you need help with something else, say, main menu.

2:02 Caller: Get started.

2:06 FPL: Let's get started with step one, where I would ask you questions about the service address. I'll need to know the address where you'd like the service to be connected. First, what's the zip code?

2:19 Caller: Agent.

2:22 FPL: Sorry, that option is not available. Let's try again.

2:26 Caller: Representative.

2:30 FPL: Please make sure it is safe to turn power on at your location by ensuring that major appliances are turned off or by turning your breakers to the off position. Also, please make sure we have safe, unobstructed access to your meter by opening any locked gates and securing any dogs or animals on the premises. All right, this part of the process is complete, and your information has been saved for the next step.

The call log has our caller saying "Speak to a person." here. It isn't audible on the recording.

2:56 FPL: Your call is being routed to the next available agent and will be recorded for quality assurance. We are currently experiencing long wait times for...

3:07 FPL: Good afternoon, thank you for calling FPL. My name is [name removed]. May I have your name?

3:13 Caller: Hi, this is Nick [last name removed]'s assistant. I was hoping to ask how someone new to FPL starts electric service at a new address.

3:22 FPL: Okay. Perfect. Let me help you with that. Can I have, please, the address where you want to connect the service?

3:31 Caller: Hmm, we don't have the new address yet. Could I just ask what a new customer needs to start service and how far ahead they should call?

3:41 FPL: Of course. They can call at any time, even though the same day, because we connect the service remotely, and that it takes between a couple of minutes to four hours. And the only thing that we need is the name, the social security number, phone number, and email address, and of course, the address, when they want to connect the service. That's the only thing that we need, and we connect the service at the moment.

4:06 Caller: Perfect. And is there a connection fee or any deposit that might be due?

4:12 FPL: That's the reason why we ask the social security number. At the time that we place the social, the system do a credit review, and that is what depends if the system charge a deposit or not.

4:25 Caller: Gotcha. And when would that deposit be due, if they do require one?

4:30 FPL: Ten days after the account is established.

4:35 Caller: Okay, great. Thanks so much for your help.

4:38 FPL: It was my pleasure. Thank you for calling. Have a beautiful day, okay?

4:42 Caller: You too. Bye.

4:44 FPL: Thank you. Bye-bye.

About 19 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

4:46 FPL: Ma'am, are you still there?

4:48 Caller: No, that's all I needed. Thanks again. Bye.

4:52 FPL: Okay, you're welcome.
