Piedmont Natural Gas customer service: getting your account number for login
A call4me customer's assistant called Piedmont Natural Gas to recover an account number for online registration. A representative answered 2 minutes 6 seconds in, the account holder joined, and a team lead read the number out after one more security question. The phone tree, what they asked for, and the full 15 minute recording.
The short answer: the Piedmont Natural Gas customer service number is 800-752-7504 (listed as 800.752.7504) for both home and business customers. Piedmont's customer service page says "Customer Service representatives are available by phone Monday – Friday 7:30 am to 7pm EST." The same page lists 1.704.382.7644 for international callers, 711 for hearing or speech impaired callers (TTY or TDD relay), and says to call 800.752.7504 or 911 if you suspect a gas leak. That's the number our caller dialed.
A voice menu answers first. On this call, this got to a live representative:
- At "What's the phone number on your account?", give the phone number on the account. Ours wasn't found, so the menu offered to "find my account another way".
- When it asks for your account number, say you don't have it. It answered "No problem. How can I help?"
- Say what you need. Our caller said it wanted the account number and the steps to register online. The menu answered "You need help with the website, right?"
- At "Please pick your service type, business or residential", say "residential". It said "Putting you through."
A live Piedmont Natural Gas representative answered 2 minutes 6 seconds into the call.
What happened next, on Monday, October 12, 2026, when a call4me customer's assistant called to recover the customer's account number so he could set up his online login:
- The representative wouldn't work with the AI assistant alone. She asked for the service address, the account phone number and the account password, and asked to speak with the account holder. When he wasn't reachable at first, she said to "call back with" him "before 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time", which matches the hours on Piedmont's site.
- The account holder joined the call and was asked for his full name, service address, phone number, email address and password. None of his password guesses matched.
- The account was "not registered online", which is why his attempt to create a login with that email address "didn't show up".
- The first representative wouldn't read out the account number. "Since you didn't call from the number that's listed on your account, then I wouldn't be able to provide it to you verbally." She offered to mail his last bill to the mailing address on file, and said she couldn't email it or call him back.
- A customer care team lead took over after about 2 minutes of hold music. She said she had "two questions" to ask, asked for "the amount of your last bill. Not your most recent one, but the last one", and after his answer read out the account number, then confirmed his readback: "Yes, sir, that is correct."
What the call established
| Detail | What the conversation established |
|---|---|
| Number dialed | 800-752-7504, the customer service number on Piedmont's site |
| Time to a person | 2 minutes 6 seconds, through the voice menu |
| Who could get the number | The account holder, after joining the call. The AI assistant alone could not |
| Questions asked | Full name, service address, account phone number, email address, account password, and the amount of a past bill |
| Online account status | "Not registered online" |
| First representative's answer | No account number by phone, because he wasn't calling from the number on the account. Offered to mail the last bill |
| Team lead's answer | Read out the account number after the bill question, and confirmed the readback |
| Callback from Piedmont | "I wouldn't be able to call you" |
| Online registration steps | Not captured. The recording ends mid-sentence |
What this call did not settle
- The online registration steps. The team lead had started explaining registration ("in registering your online account, your username") when the recording ends, 14 minutes 55 seconds in. We don't know what she said next, or whether the customer finished registering.
- The second security question. The team lead said she had two questions. The recording has only one, the amount of a past bill. She may have counted the earlier checks.
- Whether calling from the phone number on the account would have been enough. That's what the first representative said, but the customer didn't call back to test it.
- Whether the mailed bill was sent. The representative offered to mail it and he said "Sure", but nothing in the call confirms it was mailed, and the number was read out later anyway.
- Hours beyond what was said. The representative's "before 7 p.m. Eastern" matches the site's weekday hours. Nobody said anything about weekends on the call.
Listen to the call
The whole call, 14 minutes 55 seconds, at its original timing. The account holder joined at about 7:01, and his voice is disguised (pitch shifted) from then on, so his words stay audible without his own voice. Short silences cover his name, the service address, city and ZIP code, phone number, email address, password guesses, the bill amount, every reading of the account number, and the representatives' first names. The quiet stretch from about 5:43 to 6:34 is call4me ringing the account holder, who didn't pick up the first time. The hold music from about 10:54 to 12:47 is kept in full. Nothing is cut.

0:20 Phone system: What's the phone number on your account? You can...
0:23 AI agent: It's [account phone number muted].
0:32 Phone system: Okay, looks like that number isn't saved to an account. Go ahead and give me a different phone number, or say find my account another way.
0:40 AI agent: Hmm, let's find the account another way.
0:46 Phone system: Okay, we can also find that using your account number. What's that account number?
0:51 AI agent: I don't have the account number. Could we look it up another way, maybe by name or service address instead?
1:01 Phone system: You said, I don't know, right?
1:04 AI agent: Right.
1:06 Phone system: No problem. How can I help?
1:11 AI agent: I'm trying to help the account holder get their account number and the right steps to register for online access. The name on the account should be [account holder name muted]. What's the best way to look it up if we don't have the account number?
1:27 Phone system: You need help with the website, right?
1:31 AI agent: Exactly.
1:33 Phone system: Let's make sure we connect you to the right specialized agent. Please pick your service type, business or residential.

1:49 AI agent: Okay.
1:52 Phone system: Sure.

2:06 Representative: Thank you for calling Piedmont Natural Gas. [Representative first name muted] speaking. How may I help you today?
2:11 AI agent: Hi. I'm calling on behalf of [account holder name muted], trying to get his account number and the right steps to register for online access. We don't have the account number handy. Could you help us look it up another way?
2:26 Representative: What is your name, please?
2:29 AI agent: I'm his assistant, calling for [account holder name muted].
2:34 Representative: Yes, ma'am. And what is your name?
2:37 AI agent: I'm his assistant. I don't have a name.
2:45 Representative: What's the address?
2:49 AI agent: One sec, let me get him on the line.
2:51 Representative: Is this AI?
2:53 AI agent: Yeah, I'm an AI assistant for [account holder name muted].
2:58 Representative: What's the address, please?
3:11 Representative: Hello?
3:12 AI agent: I don't have that detail yet. Is there another way to look it up?
3:18 Representative: No, ma'am.
3:22 AI agent: Okay, could we try verifying with his phone number or maybe last four of his SSN?
3:29 Representative: Yes, we would still need the address. What is the phone number?
3:35 AI agent: It's [account phone number muted]. And if it helps, his saved home address is [street address and ZIP code muted].
4:10 Representative: Is this the service address?
4:15 AI agent: That's the home address we have on file. I'm not sure if it's the service address, but that's what he has. Can we try that one?
4:25 Representative: What city, state, and zip code is this address in?
4:31 AI agent: One sec. It's in [city muted], South Carolina, [ZIP code muted].
4:57 Representative: And can you verify the primary telephone number on this account?
5:04 AI agent: Sure. It's [account phone number muted].
5:13 Representative: Thank you. And what is the password?
5:17 AI agent: We'll need to bring in [account holder first name muted] to handle any sensitive verification details.
5:35 Representative: Okay. Can I speak with [account holder first name muted], please?
5:39 AI agent: Yeah, one sec. Getting [account holder first name muted] on the call.
About 5:43 to 6:34: call4me rings the account holder, who doesn't answer. No one speaks on the recording.
6:34 Representative: Hello?
6:37 AI agent: Hey, sorry, [account holder first name muted] isn't available right now. Would you be able to call him back directly?
6:44 Representative: No, ma'am.
6:47 AI agent: Oh, okay. Well, I guess we can just continue with what we can do without him.
6:53 Representative: No, ma'am. You can call back with [account holder first name muted] before 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
About 7:01: call4me rings the account holder again, and he joins the call.
7:01 Representative: Hello?
7:03 Customer (voice disguised): Hello? Hey, this is [account holder first name muted]. I'm the homeowner.
7:07 Representative: Hi, this is [representative first name muted] with Piedmont Natural Gas. How are you doing today, sir?
7:11 Customer (voice disguised): Hey, [representative first name muted].
7:13 Representative: Hi. Could you state your full name and the service address that you were calling in reference to? The assistant didn't know the service address.
7:21 Customer (voice disguised): Oh, okay. [Account holder name and service address muted.]
7:32 Representative: And that's the service address you're calling about?
7:35 Customer (voice disguised): Yes. Yes.
7:40 Representative: Thank you so much. And can you verify your telephone number for me, please?
7:44 Customer (voice disguised): [Account phone number muted.]
7:48 Representative: And your email address?
7:50 Customer (voice disguised): [Email address muted.]
7:56 Representative: Thank you so much, [account holder last name muted].
7:58 Customer (voice disguised): Okay. I tried to create an account with that email address, but it said it didn't show up. And so that's the only reason I'm calling you is because I was trying to set up an online account and I can't get it figured out.
8:10 Representative: Oh, I can help you with that today. Also, what is your password?
8:15 Customer (voice disguised): I've got a couple. Can I try a couple? I'm not sure which one you have.
8:22 Representative: Sure.
8:23 Customer (voice disguised): [Password guess muted]?
8:27 Representative: No, sir.
8:28 Customer (voice disguised): [Password guess muted]?
8:31 Representative: No, sir.
8:34 Customer (voice disguised): [Password guess muted]? I don't know what it would be.
8:37 Representative: Thank you so much.
8:38 Customer (voice disguised): Okay, amazing.
8:41 Representative: And let me look at your online account. Give me one moment. Okay. What it is is it's not registered online.
8:51 Customer (voice disguised): Okay.
8:52 Representative: Your account number is not registered online. Would you happen to have your account number or your last bill that we emailed to you so I can show you how to see your account number?
9:03 Customer (voice disguised): I do not. The whole reason I was calling is so you could tell me my account number.
9:11 Representative: Okay, so I wouldn't be able to provide you with your account number per your safety on the account over the phone. However, what I can do is I can send you an email. Well, not an email. I can mail you your last bill at your mailing address on file. Would you like me to do that?
9:30 Customer (voice disguised): Sure.
9:33 Representative: Okay. One second.
9:37 Customer (voice disguised): So you can't email it to me?
9:40 Representative: No, ma'am. No, sir. That's for your security. If you had your last bill pulled up, then I can show you how you can see your account number on your email.
9:51 Customer (voice disguised): Oh, yeah. What's the difference in mailing it to me and emailing it to me?
9:59 Representative: Well, emailing it to you, I would be emailing it directly to you. And since you didn't call from the number that's listed on your account, then I wouldn't be able to provide it to you verbally.
10:13 Customer (voice disguised): Okay. Can I call you back from my number? I mean, it's just my assistant on the phone.
10:19 Representative: Sure, you can do that. Yeah, you can do that.
10:23 Customer (voice disguised): Or can you call me back so I'm the only one on the line, so you can reach me directly?
10:28 Representative: No, sir. I wouldn't be able to call you.
10:30 Customer (voice disguised): Oh, my gosh. Okay. I mean, I'm going to call back, and there's a solid chance I'm not going to get you. And then I'm going to have to go through all this stuff again.
10:42 Representative: Give me one second, and I can call someone, a team lead, and see if they can help with that. Give me one second, okay?
10:49 Customer (voice disguised): Okay, thank you.
10:51 Representative: You're welcome, sir. Sorry about the confusion.
10:53 Customer (voice disguised): No problem.
About 10:54 to 12:47: hold music, kept in full.
12:47 Team lead: [Account holder last name muted]?
12:49 Customer (voice disguised): Yes?
12:50 Team lead: Thank you for holding so patiently. My name is [team lead first name muted]. I'm a customer care team lead. You request additional assistance today?
12:57 Customer (voice disguised): I'm just trying to get my account number. And, yeah, I'm just trying to get my account number to register for an online account. [Okay, speaker unclear.] I'm trying to do something right now, and so I don't... I'm trying to do it... I'm trying to get my number so I can register today.
13:17 Team lead: Okay. Okay. So you understand that the reason why the rep couldn't provide it to you because you're not calling from the same number that we have on file. So I do have two questions that I have to ask you. And if you answer them correctly, I'll be able to provide it to you.
13:33 Customer (voice disguised): Okay.
13:34 Team lead: Can you give me the amount of your last bill? Not your most recent one, but the last one.
13:42 Customer (voice disguised): Yeah, let me... I think I can. Let me pull it up.
13:47 Team lead: Okay.
About 13:48 to 14:08: the account holder looks up the bill.
14:07 Customer (voice disguised): Natural gas. [Bill date and amount muted.]
14:12 Team lead: Okay. All right. Thank you so much. And you ready for your account number?
14:17 Customer (voice disguised): Yes, I am.
14:19 Team lead: Okay. It is [account number muted].
14:34 Customer (voice disguised): Okay, so I got [account number muted].
14:42 Team lead: Yes, sir, that is correct.
14:44 Customer (voice disguised): All right. I'm going to register for an online account. Thank you.
14:49 Team lead: Okay. And let me just make you aware, in registering your online account, your username [recording ends mid-sentence]
The Piedmont Natural Gas phone tree, step by step
This is the menu as it played on October 12, 2026, calling 800-752-7504.
- "Piedmont Natural Gas. This call may be recorded." Then "Para español, marque cinco."
- "What's the phone number on your account?" It looks up your account by phone number first. The number our caller gave "isn't saved to an account", and it offered: "give me a different phone number, or say find my account another way."
- "What's that account number?" Our caller said it didn't have one. The menu took that as "I don't know" and asked "How can I help?"
- Describe your problem. For an account number and online access, the menu answered "You need help with the website, right?" and said it would connect "the right specialized agent".
- "Please pick your service type, business or residential." Our caller said "residential". The menu said "Putting you through", and a representative answered at 2:06.
We only went down this one branch. We don't know what the menu does if your phone number is found, or for billing, start or stop service, or emergencies. For a gas leak, Piedmont's site says to leave the area and call 800.752.7504 or 911.
What to have ready to get your Piedmont Natural Gas account number
This is what Piedmont asked for on this call, before it would read out an account number:
- Call from the phone number on the account, if you can. The first representative said that was the reason she couldn't give the number "verbally".
- Your full name and service address, including city and ZIP code. The representative wouldn't look anything up without the address.
- The phone number and email address on the account.
- Your account password, if you set one. The account holder's guesses didn't match, and the call went on anyway.
- A past bill. The team lead asked for "the amount of your last bill. Not your most recent one, but the last one." Have your bill history open.
- The account holder on the line. An AI assistant calling alone could not get any of this done.
If you only need the number to create a Piedmont Natural Gas login, a past bill shows it. The representative offered to mail the last bill when she wouldn't read the number out.
How the assistant handled the call
This was a call4me customer's assistant, not our own test, and it made a few mistakes worth knowing about:
- It read the account phone number with an extra digit. The menu couldn't find an account with it. The account holder later gave his number himself.
- It said things it wasn't doing. It told the menu it was "getting" the account holder "on the line" before it rang him, and offered to verify with "last four of his SSN", which it didn't have.
- It said it didn't have the address, then gave a saved home address when asked again, and wasn't sure it was the service address.
- It handed off the password correctly. When asked for the password, it said the account holder would "handle any sensitive verification details" instead of guessing, and rang him. The first ring went unanswered. The second, after the representative said to call back later, got him on the line.
What actually got the account number was the account holder answering the security questions himself.

Have your agent make this call
Connect call4me to your agent with the Claude Code guide or the Codex guide. This is a suggested brief, not what the customer used:
Call Piedmont Natural Gas customer service at 800-752-7504, Monday to Friday between 7:30 am and 7 pm Eastern. Say you're my assistant. At the phone number prompt, give [the phone number on my account]. If it isn't found, say you don't have the account number, say I need help with my account number and online access, and choose residential. When a representative answers, give my name and service address, [name and service address], and ring me to join as soon as they ask for a password or any security question. Don't guess a password or bill amount. Ask what I need to register for an online account, and write down every step they give.
