NY Tolls by Mail phone number: check for unpaid bills with just a plate
A call4me customer's assistant called NY Tolls by Mail with no bill number, only a California plate and the owner's name. A person answered 2 minutes 37 seconds in and found unpaid toll bills. The same assistant also checked New Jersey E-ZPass and the PA Turnpike. Here are the phone trees, what each agency said, and all three recordings.
The short answer: the Tolls by Mail NY phone number is 1-844-826-8400. The MTA's how to pay tolls page lists it as "For toll bills: Tolls by Mail, 844-826-8400". The same page also gives 800-333-8655 "For help with both E-ZPass and Tolls by Mail", and 718-313-9414 "For notices of violation". tollsbymailny.com now redirects to e-zpassny.com, which blocked our automated check, so the MTA page is the official listing we could read.
You don't need a bill number. On October 8, 2026, a call4me customer's assistant called 1-844-826-8400 with only a California license plate, the registered owner's name and their address. This got it to a person:
- Press 1 at "If you are calling regarding a Tolls by Mail bill, to pay a violation, or to make a one-time payment on your E-ZPass account, press one."
- Press 1 at "For Tolls by Mail, press one."
- Press 1 at "To convert now or talk to an agent regarding Tolls by Mail, press one."
Key presses aren't audible in the recording, but the menu or transfer that followed each step matches option 1. A representative at the E-ZPass New York Service Center answered 2 minutes 37 seconds into the call. There was no hold queue, only a transfer message.
What the representative did with just a plate:
- She found unpaid bills. "I did pull up some toll bills and violation."
- Her first offer was to email the details. "I can put a case in to have the information emailed out to you." When asked, she read them out instead.
- One amount: $75.66. "Toll amount is seventy five dollars and sixty six cents." She then read one toll bill number (muted in the recording).
- Travel dates and crossings: "July twentieth, twenty second, twenty third for George Washington, Robert Kennedy. Robert Kennedy Outer Bridge." That names the George Washington Bridge and the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, and most likely the Outerbridge Crossing.
- How to pay: "with a debit, credit, or bank account."
This page is what the recordings show. Nothing was paid on any of the calls.
What the calls established
| Agency and number | Time to a person | Looked up by | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| NY Tolls by Mail, 1-844-826-8400 | 2:37 | Plate, owner name and address | Unpaid toll bills and a violation found; one total of $75.66 and one bill number given; July 20, 22 and 23 travel |
| New Jersey E-ZPass, 888-288-6865 | 14:54 | Plate, owner name and address | "No violations in our system for that license plate", and no unpaid toll bills |
| Pennsylvania Turnpike, 1-877-736-6727 | 2:14 | Plate, then owner name and ZIP code | "I don't have anything under that license plate", and nothing under the name |
The customer was checking an out-of-state plate (California) across the three toll agencies near New York City. If you drove through more than one state, each agency only sees its own roads, so you call each one.

The E-ZPass NY customer service phone tree, step by step
This is the menu as it played on October 8, 2026, calling 1-844-826-8400. If you want the E-ZPass NY customer service number for a live person about a toll bill, this is the route that worked.
- "Welcome to E-ZPass New York and Tolls by Mail self-service system." Spanish is option 8.
- A notice for Orange County residents about a Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge plan, then a list of what to have ready: "Your account number, E-ZPass tag number, case number, invoice number, violation number, or license plate number."
- It points you to chat and the app. e-zpassny.com "to speak with a live agent via chat", or the Tolls NY app.
- Press 1 for "a Tolls by Mail bill, to pay a violation, or to make a one-time payment on your E-ZPass account." Press 2 for everything else (we didn't try it).
- Press 1 for Tolls by Mail. Option 2 is "To pay a toll violation", option 3 is "For all disputes".
- Press 1 "To convert now or talk to an agent regarding Tolls by Mail." Option 2 is "To pay a Tolls by Mail bill", which we didn't try.
- "Great. Let me transfer you to someone who can help you with that." The ready-items message plays again, then a recording notice.
- A person, 2 minutes 37 seconds after dialing: "Are you calling in regards to your E-ZPass, or did you get a bill?"
Even though the menu doesn't say "representative", the "talk to an agent" choice is in the Tolls by Mail branch, under the pitch to convert to an E-ZPass account.
What to have ready
- Your license plate and state. That was enough to start the lookup. Expect to spell it back: the representative repeated it phonetically ("P as in Paul, S as in Sam").
- The registered owner's name and address. "May I have your name and your address" came right after the plate.
- A bill or invoice number, if you have one. The menu lists it, but our call shows it isn't required.
- A debit card, credit card or bank account, if you plan to pay on the call. We didn't pay, so we don't know what the payment step sounds like.
- A pen. The representative's first offer was to email the details; she read them out when asked.
How to pay NY tolls without E-ZPass
The call and its menu gave three routes for Tolls by Mail bills, without an E-ZPass account:
- By phone at 1-844-826-8400, "with a debit, credit, or bank account", according to the representative. The menu also has a separate "To pay a Tolls by Mail bill, press two" option.
- Online or by chat at e-zpassny.com, which the menu says has "a live agent via chat".
- In the Tolls NY app, which the menu offers "for self-service options and information".
The menu also pitches converting: "Save money by converting to an E-ZPass account." We didn't ask how much that saves.
The New Jersey E-ZPass and PA Turnpike checks
The same assistant called two more toll agencies the same day, with the same plate and owner details, and no bill numbers.
New Jersey E-ZPass, 888-288-6865. The New Jersey E-ZPass site lists "(888) AUTO-TOLL (888-288-6865)" for its customer service center. The menu asks for an account number and PIN. Our caller's spoken answers got "This is an invalid response" three times, and after the third the system said "Please hold while we transfer your call to the next available customer service representative." The second time through, the menu added "If you need to speak to a customer service representative, press or say eight." It warned "Your wait to speak with an agent may exceed eight minutes." A representative answered at 14:54. She took the plate, the owner's name and address, and said "there is no violations in our system for that license plate", and "No, ma'am" to unpaid toll bills.
The New Jersey greeting also said New York E-ZPass customers who got "a violation on a New Jersey toll road or bridge between April 6, 2025 through August 31, 2025" should call E-ZPass New York at 800-333-8655.
Pennsylvania Turnpike, 1-877-736-6727. PA tolls by mail are called Toll By Plate. The PA Turnpike help center lists this number for E-ZPass and Toll By Plate, with agents "Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m." A spoken assistant answered first ("How can I help you today"). Our caller said it was about unpaid tolls for a plate, then "Toll by plate". A keypad menu followed, then a Toll By Plate menu ("If you do not have an invoice or need to speak with a customer service representative, please press zero"), then "Are you still there?" and a transfer. A Toll By Plate representative answered at 2:14. She found nothing under the plate, then nothing under the name and ZIP code: "the plate would pop up if there was", "that plate has nothing."
Listen to the New Jersey E-ZPass call

3:57 Representative: You're welcome. Anything else I could do for you?
3:59 AI agent: No, that was it. Thanks again! Bye. [hum]

What the calls didn't settle
- No breakdown of the NY bill. The representative gave one amount, $75.66, and one bill number, but didn't split it by date or crossing, or say how much was tolls versus violation fees. She said she'd pulled up "toll bills and violation", so there may be more than one item.
- The crossings are partly unclear. "Robert Kennedy Outer Bridge" most likely means the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and the Outerbridge Crossing, but she didn't pair dates with crossings.
- Nothing was paid, and no email case was opened. We don't know what the phone payment step asks for.
- The plate readback on the NY call wasn't confirmed after the correction. She read it back with an extra letter, the caller corrected her, and she moved on to the name and address. She did find bills under the owner's details.
- The PA name search used a different spelling. The representative asked whether the last name was spelled one way and our caller agreed, though the owner's name is spelled differently. Her plate search, which she said is what matters, found nothing either way.
- We didn't try other menu branches, including "To pay a Tolls by Mail bill, press two" on the NY line, or New Jersey's "press or say eight".
- Hours weren't asked. The MTA page doesn't list them for 1-844-826-8400.
- A clean result is only for that day and those agencies. Tolls can post weeks after travel, and other states' toll roads weren't checked.
How the call was made
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. The customer's brief for each call was a lookup only: find any unpaid bills by plate and owner name, report the bill number, amount, date and location for each, ask how to pay, and don't pay or read out any card numbers.
On our side of the calls:
- It narrated to the phone menus. On the New Jersey line it said things like "Okay, choosing from their menu now" and "third time's the charm" to the automated system, which answered "This is an invalid response" each time. The repeated invalid responses are what ended in a transfer.
- It agreed to a wrong spelling on the PA call, as noted above.
- It didn't push for an itemized NY breakdown after getting one total, and didn't ask about the email case.
The recordings are kept as they happened, apart from the muted details.
Have your agent make this call
Connect call4me to your agent with the Claude Code guide or the Codex guide. This is a suggested brief, not the one the customer used:
Call NY Tolls by Mail at 1-844-826-8400. Press 1 (Tolls by Mail bill), press 1 (Tolls by Mail), then press 1 (talk to an agent). Ask whether there are unpaid Tolls by Mail bills for [state] plate [plate], registered to [owner name] at [address]. For each item, ask for the bill number, amount, date of travel and crossing, and whether any violation fees are included. Ask how to pay, but don't pay and don't read out any card or bank numbers. If they offer to email the details, ask them to read them out too.
If you drove through New Jersey or Pennsylvania as well, add New Jersey E-ZPass at 888-288-6865 and the PA Turnpike at 1-877-736-6727 to the same brief.
Hear all three calls on the examples page. For another fine-paying call, see the Marina traffic court phone number guide, and for how long other companies took to answer, see how long it takes to reach a human.
