Windstream customer service: the line where a person answered

Windstream is now Kinetic. We called three times. Two calls stopped at an account number prompt. The third, on the sales line with option 1, reached a live rep in under a minute. Here are all three recordings, the menus, and what the rep said.

Nick Khami · · 11 min read

The short answer: Windstream customer service is now Kinetic. windstream.com's contact page redirects to gokinetic.com/support. To reach a person, call Kinetic Sales at (866) 703-8175 and press 1 ("new residential deals and offers"). On our call a live sales representative answered 55 seconds in, not a recording and not an AI assistant. They didn't ask for an account number.

What the rep told us:

  1. No contract and no early termination fee. "There is no contract with Kinetic. So there is no contract to sign, so no early termination fee or something like that."
  2. A rented modem has to go back when you cancel. On some plans ("the plans of one gig to two gigs") you rent Kinetic's modem: "They should have to pay $10 for the modem, and they should have to return it whenever, you know, they decide to take it out of the service."
  3. You can use your own modem. "If they want to use their own modem, of course, you know, we just go and install the internet."
  4. A customer service number: 833-811-9530. The rep read it out and offered to transfer us. We haven't found that number on gokinetic.com, and we didn't call it.

This is a sales line. Our caller told the rep that Nick wasn't a current customer and was comparing providers, and the rep said "you're calling the right department because this is the sales department." We don't know how the same rep would handle an existing customer's billing or repair problem.

Our two earlier calls never reached a person. One on the support line, (800) 347-1991, and one on the sales line where our caller pressed 3 (existing customers). Both ended at the same prompt: "Please enter either your phone number, including area code, or enter the account number located on your bill, and then press pound." Those calls are below.

We made all three calls on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 4:25 pm, 4:30 pm and 5:02 pm Eastern, with call4me placing them.

Windstream customer service, Kinetic sales (866) 703-8175, press 1 to reach a live person

Kinetic customer service numbers and hours

From the "reach us by phone" section of gokinetic.com/support, checked on October 8, 2026:

Line Number Hours (Eastern)
Account support (800) 347-1991 Mon to Fri 7:00am to 8:00pm, Sat 8:30am to 5:00pm
Service Support (800) 347-1991 Mon to Fri 7:00am to 11:00pm, Sat and Sun 8:00am to 11:00pm
Sales (866) 703-8175 Mon to Fri 7:00am to 10:00pm, Sat and Sun 8:00am to 9:00pm
Financial (800) 537-7755 Mon to Fri 8:00am to 6:00pm, Sat 8:30am to 5:00pm
Order Updates (800) 481-5441 24 hours

Account support and Service Support share one number but list different hours. The same page also has an "existing customer support" box with other hours and no number: "billing & account support" Mon to Sun 7:00 am to 7:00 pm (ET), and "technical support & phone repairs" Mon to Sun 7:00 am to 10:00 pm (ET). Those don't match the table above, and the page doesn't say which is right. All three of our calls were inside the listed window for the line we called.

The top of the page also has a call link to 1-866-445-8084, with no label or hours. We didn't call it.

833-811-9530, the number the rep gave us, isn't on gokinetic.com/support or gokinetic.com/support/contact-us, and a web search on October 8, 2026 found no Kinetic page listing it. The rep gave it to us as the customer service number. We didn't call it.

The old Windstream contact page, windstream.com/support/contact-us, now sends you to gokinetic.com/support/contact-us.

Listen to the call that reached a person

The whole call, 5 minutes 58 seconds, at 5:02 pm Eastern on (866) 703-8175. Nothing is cut. Muted: the rep's name, my last name, and the callback number our caller gave.

Jump to a moment:

The Kinetic phone menus, step by step

On the sales line, (866) 703-8175:

  1. "Thank you for calling Kinetic Fiber Internet. To ensure your call is routed properly, please select one of the following three options."
  2. Press 1 for "new residential deals and offers". This is the option that reached a person for us.
  3. Press 2 for "new business promotions". We didn't try it.
  4. Press 3 if "you are an existing customer calling for upgrades or have recently signed up for service". On our earlier call, this led into the main Kinetic menu below and its account number prompt.

After pressing 1, there was about 30 seconds with no speech, then the rep picked up.

On the support line, (800) 347-1991 (and after option 3 on the sales line):

  1. "Thanks for calling Kinetic. Para continuar en español, oprima ocho." Press 8 for Spanish.
  2. The main menu. "If you're already a Kinetic customer, press 1. To ask about becoming our customer, press 2. To check order status, press 3. If you're calling to report a downed telephone line or pole, press 4."
  3. Existing customers: the account prompt. "Please enter either your phone number, including area code, or enter the account number located on your bill, and then press pound." Enter it here.
  4. If it doesn't take, you hear "We couldn't identify your account by the number you entered" and the same prompt again.
  5. Then it asks residential or business. "To ask about service for a residential account, press 1. For a business account, press 2."
  6. Then it offers to wait. "Do you need some extra time to find your account number associated with your Kinetic account? If so, I will wait 30 seconds. Ready to look at your account number? Press 1."
  7. If you still have nothing to enter, it hangs up. "Sorry, I will now end the call. Goodbye."

We didn't try option 2 on the main menu ("To ask about becoming our customer").

What to have ready

For the sales route, nothing: the rep asked for a phone number to call back on if the call dropped, and then took our questions. If you want to set up service, the rep said "we just take the address, and then we can tell you what kind of promotions and what kind of high speed internet we can offer to you."

For the support line, have the phone number on your Kinetic account, including the area code, or the account number from your bill, and know whether it's a residential or a business account. The menu asked for both before anything else.

Is there an early cancellation fee?

The rep said no: "there is no contract with Kinetic. So there is no contract to sign, so no early termination fee or something like that."

Kinetic's own FAQ agrees. Is there an early cancellation fee?, checked on October 8, 2026, says: "No, Kinetic does not charge a termination fee in the event you decide to cancel your service."

On equipment, the rep said a rented modem has to be returned when you cancel, and that you can use your own modem instead. The rep said "$10 for the modem" but didn't say whether that's a one time or a monthly charge. The FAQ page doesn't cover equipment. We didn't ask how to return a modem or how to cancel.

If you call the support line or press 3

Before the call above, we called twice and never got past the account prompt. No live representative and no AI assistant picked up: only a recorded menu. We had no Kinetic account to give, so we couldn't get past it. If you have yours, enter it at that prompt. We don't know what comes after it.

4:25 pm: the support line, (800) 347-1991

The whole call, 1 minute 35 seconds. Nothing is cut or muted: no names or numbers were said.

At 0:25, the menu restarted and cut off mid-sentence ("If you're already a...") right into the account prompt. That's what you'd hear if our caller pressed 1. Key presses don't show up in our recordings, and our call log doesn't list them for this call, so we can't confirm it.

The menu said "we couldn't identify your account by the number you entered" on both of these calls, though we had no account number to enter. We can't tell from the recording whether anything was entered or whether that's simply what it says when nothing is.

4:30 pm: the sales line, option 3

The whole call, 2 minutes 37 seconds, on (866) 703-8175. Nothing is cut or muted.

Our caller chose the existing customer option (3), not new residential deals (1). Our questions were about cancelling service, so it said "upgrades sounds like customer service," and our call log says it took the existing customer option. After the menu played twice, the call moved to the same Kinetic menu the support line plays, and from there to the same account number prompt. Asking for a representative out loud didn't get past it.

Things that didn't work

On October 8, 2026, at Kinetic's account prompt:

We have no record of our caller pressing 0 on either call.

How we made these recordings

call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For the first two calls, the brief was to reach a person, without logging in or giving account details, and ask three general questions: whether a residential internet customer can cancel by phone and whether there's an early termination fee, whether the modem has to be returned and how, and (on the support line) whether there are offers for customers thinking about cancelling, or (on the sales line) the best number for an existing customer to reach a person. If a menu asked for an account number, it was to say it had a general question and ask for a representative.

The first two calls failed because of our caller:

The third call fixed that. Our caller pressed 1 for new residential deals and offers, introduced itself as my assistant comparing internet providers, and asked about contracts, early termination fees, the modem, and the customer service number. It gave the rep call4me's own number when asked for one in case of a disconnect (muted in the recording). It turned down the rep's offer to transfer us to customer service, so we don't know where that transfer goes. Nothing was ordered or changed.

Our call log has a few short lines from our caller that aren't audible on the recordings, and they're marked in the transcripts.

Have your agent make this call

If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:

Call Kinetic (Windstream) sales at (866) 703-8175. At the first menu, press 1 for new residential deals and offers. When a person answers, say you're calling for me and ask [your question]. If they ask for a callback number, give [your phone number]. If they offer to transfer you to customer service, [accept / decline]. Don't order, change or cancel anything, and write down exactly what they say.

If you're an existing customer and want the account route instead: call (800) 347-1991, press 1 for existing customer, and enter the phone number on your account (with area code) or the account number from your bill, then press pound.

Read the transcript of the call that reached a person

The transcript follows the recording. "Caller" is the call4me agent. "Kinetic" is the recorded phone menu. "Rep" is the live Kinetic sales representative. Muted parts are shown in brackets.

0:01 Kinetic: Thank you for calling Kinetic Fiber Internet. To ensure your call is routed properly, please select one of the following three options. If you are interested in hearing about new residential deals and offers, press 1. If you are interested in hearing about new business promotions, press 2. If you're an existing customer calling for upgrades or have recently signed up for service, press 3.

From the call log, not audible on the recording: our caller says "Mm." and "Okay."

[Our caller presses 1. Key presses aren't audible; our call log records that it pressed 1.]

About 30 seconds with no speech.

0:55 Rep: Hello, thank you so much for calling Kinetic. My name is [name removed]. Who do I have the pleasure to stay with today?

1:01 Caller: Sure, this is Nick [last name removed]'s assistant. We're comparing internet providers and have a couple quick questions.

1:09 Rep: For sure, Ms. Nick. But before that, can you please provide me a telephone number, just in case we get disconnected?

1:16 Caller: Yeah, sure thing. It's [phone number removed].

1:22 Rep: Thanks so much, Nick. How can I help you today?

1:27 Caller: So, yeah, we're just looking at possible new internet providers. And he's just wondering if there's a contract or early termination fee if someone cancels down the road.

1:40 Rep: No, I'm glad that you're asking that at the beginning, because no, there is no contract with Kinetic. So there is no contract to sign, so no early termination fee or something like that.

1:54 Caller: Oh, nice. Okay, great. And if someone cancels, do they need to return the modem? And if yes, how does that work?

2:03 Rep: Yeah, okay, it all depends because, you know, it all depends on what kind of package this customer has. Because example, like the plans of one gig to two gigs, so they do have to rent the modem, you know. They should have to pay $10 for the modem, and they should have to return it whenever, you know, they decide to take it out of the service. However, so if they want to use their own modem, of course, you know, we just go and install the internet, and then they do have their own modem.

2:39 Caller: Gotcha. That's really clear, thanks. And yeah, we just had one more. For an existing customer, what's the phone number they'd call to reach a real person in customer service?

2:53 Rep: On customer service? Yes, I can provide you the telephone number. Let me just find that for you.

2:59 Caller: No problem.

3:04 Rep: Is this customer is a new, or he's a current customer?

3:10 Caller: He is, he's not a current customer. He's looking to set up a new service.

3:17 Rep: Oh, okay, well, we can help you out to set up a new service if you want to. So we can check the status of the address. So you're calling the right department, because this is the sales department. So we just take the address, and then we can tell you what kind of promotions and what kind of high speed internet we can offer to you.

3:38 Caller: Yeah, I think right now we're just hoping to get that customer service number. That's all we need for now, if that's okay.

3:46 Rep: For sure. Give me just a minute, I can find that for you.

3:50 Caller: Sure.

About a minute of silence on the line, from 3:52 to 4:58.

4:58 Rep: Hey, I do have the telephone number I can provide to you, and also I can just transfer to you as well.

5:05 Caller: Okay.

5:05 Rep: I'm going to give you the number first. Just let me know when you are ready, and then after that I can transfer to you.

5:11 Caller: Yeah, ready. Go ahead.

5:14 Rep: Okay, it is 833...

5:17 Caller: Mm-hmm. Yep.

5:20 Rep: 811...

5:21 Caller: Okay.

5:25 Rep: And 9530.

5:27 Caller: Awesome. Thank you. That's very helpful.

5:30 Rep: Okay, now just... Yeah, for sure.

5:33 Caller: Yeah, I think that's everything we needed. And he's just comparing right now, so we don't need to transfer at the moment, but really appreciate your help.

5:43 Caller: Yeah, thanks so much.

5:44 Rep: For sure. No problem at all. Thanks for calling Kinetic, and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.

5:50 Caller: Bye. You too. Take care.

5:53 Rep: Thanks. Bye-bye.

5:56 Caller: Okay.

Our caller ends the call. The recording runs to 5:58.
