American Airlines flight credit: what it takes to use one by phone, from two recorded calls

A call4me user's aa.com checkout wouldn't take their flight credit, so their AI phone assistant called American Airlines reservations twice to apply it to a held trip. Here's who has to be on the line, why the credit was worth less than the full ticket, both recordings, and what to have ready.

American Airlines flight credit, two calls to reservations, recorded

The short answer: to use an American Airlines flight credit by phone, call reservations at 800-433-7300 (English, 24 hours, per aa.com) and have the traveler named on the credit on the line, with a credit card. A Flight Credit can only pay for travel for the person named on it, and the agent applies it and takes payment for any balance in the same call. On our first call the traveler couldn't be reached, so nothing was applied. On the second, the traveler joined, the credit went on the reservation, and the agent quoted about $285 to pay.

The credit was worth less than the full ticket. The original ticket was a Nashville to New York LaGuardia round trip, out September 21 and back September 25. The agent's records showed the outbound flight had been flown, and on the call the traveler confirmed it: asked "did you use the first leg of the flight?", they said "Yes, yes." So only the LaGuardia to Nashville return was left as credit, to put toward a held Nashville to Raleigh trip.

Nothing was ticketed. After 30 minutes, a system error, two calls to other departments and about eight minutes on hold, the traveler gave their card details, asked whether they could cancel within 24 hours and get all the money back, and then said: "I'm going to hold on this purchase for now. Maybe I'll call back later."

What American needed, from the two calls:

  1. The 6-character confirmation code of the held reservation.
  2. The 13-digit flight credit number (it starts with 001).
  3. The passenger's name and date of birth.
  4. The passenger, in person. The first agent wouldn't go further with an assistant: "Can you please confirm your first and last name? It is necessary to verify your name."
  5. A credit card for the balance, given in the same call. The agent wouldn't keep the credit applied to a held reservation and let the traveler pay later.

These calls were made on Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 7:06 to 7:15 am and from 7:28 to 7:58 am Central time, by a call4me user's AI phone assistant. The user is okay with us sharing the calls. Muted in the audio: every name (the traveler's, their companion's and every American agent's), the date of birth, the record locators, the flight credit number, the flight number, the billing address, ZIP code, email address and phone number, all card details, and one personal detail about why the original trip was cancelled. Balances are what each agent said on that date. In the recordings, dead air longer than about 3 seconds (mostly the line going quiet while an agent worked or while our caller rang the traveler) is shortened to about a second. No conversation, phone menu prompt, hold message or hold music is cut.

The two calls, side by side

First call, 7:06 am Second call, 7:28 am
Length 8 minutes 56 seconds 29 minutes 56 seconds
Recording, with dead air shortened 6 minutes 9 seconds 22 minutes 28 seconds
Time to a person, on the call 1:56 2:02
Traveler on the line No: our caller rang them, no answer Yes, they joined twice
What the agent found Looked up the held reservation and the credit Credit's first flight shows as used. Only the return is left
Balance quoted after the credit $304.79 $284, then about $284.90 (we hear $284.80 and $284.90 at different points; the cents are unclear in the recording)
Result Credit not applied. Traveler has to call back Card details given, then the traveler held off. Not ticketed
Second held reservation (the companion's) Not discussed Mentioned, never reached

The held fare was $578.79, as the second agent read it out (8:21 in the recording). We don't know why two agents about 35 minutes apart quoted balances about $20 apart, and neither one broke the credit down. The second agent said outright: "we cannot calculate the amount, how much it is."

Why the flight credit was worth less than the full ticket

Our caller asked to apply the credit against the original ticket value, $576.80. The agent looked at the ticket: "I can see the ticket image and it says the flight was on 21st of September, from Nashville to LaGuardia... the status says used." On the call, the traveler confirmed the first flight had been flown, so only the return was left as credit. They wanted to use that credit from the second leg.

So the credit only covered the unused return. That lines up with what American publishes: in the travel credit table on aa.com, a Flight Credit is issued for "unused tickets." If your credit looks smaller than your original ticket, ask the agent first whether part of the ticket shows as flown.

Listen: the first call, no traveler, no credit applied (6 minutes 9 seconds)

Listen: the second call, the traveler joins (22 minutes 28 seconds)

At 22:09 the agent didn't say yes or no to a full refund. What they said was that the flight credit had been used and a cancellation would give back a trip credit. We don't know more than that, so ask for a straight answer before you pay.

How to use an American Airlines flight credit by phone, step by step

  1. Look up the credit first. On aa.com, choose "Manage trips / Check-in", then "View travel credits", and enter the confirmation code or the 13-digit ticket number of the cancelled trip (aa.com). That's the American Airlines flight credit lookup.
  2. Try aa.com once. American's steps: book the new flight, then on "Review and pay" select "Add travel credit" and pay any remaining balance. Our user tried this first, and the credit didn't go through, which is why they called.
  3. Call 800-433-7300 with the traveler next to you, or on a line you can bring them onto. American's terms say the person named on a Flight Credit can use it "for themselves only," and our first call stopped at exactly that point.
  4. Use the phone menu words that work. "Apply a flight credit to a held reservation and ticket it" wasn't understood. "Book a held reservation" was. Expect questions about miles, the number of passengers and an AAdvantage account before a person picks up, about two minutes in.
  5. Give the confirmation code, then the credit number, slowly. The second agent asked our caller to repeat it: "it seems to speak too fast."
  6. Ask whether any part of the original ticket shows as used before you argue about the amount. That's what decided the value here.
  7. Ask for the balance, and ask how they got it. Two agents gave two different numbers for the same held fare, and the second couldn't work out the credit's value on its own.
  8. Have a credit card ready, in the traveler's hands. The agent took the billing ZIP code, an email for the confirmation, the billing address, a phone number, then the card number, expiration date, name on the card and security code. American's terms say a balance above the credit can only be paid "with a credit card accepted by American."
  9. Ask about cancelling before you say yes. The traveler asked at the last step and didn't like the answer.
  10. If you're also paying for a companion's held trip, say so at the start. The companion can't use your credit, and in 30 minutes the second reservation never came up.

A few more lines from American's Flight Credit terms worth knowing:

Where our caller fell short

What to say: a script that worked

To the phone menu:

Book a held reservation.

To the agent:

Hi, I have a held reservation I'd like to ticket as it is, and a flight credit to apply to it. No changes to the flights. The confirmation code is [code], and the flight credit number is [13 digits starting with 001].

Then: "Does any part of the original ticket show as used? What's the credit worth, and what's the balance after it? If I pay now and need to cancel within 24 hours, do I get my money back, or a credit?"

Let an AI phone assistant make the calls

These calls were made by call4me, an AI phone assistant that works inside the agent you already use (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT). You tell your agent what to get done. It calls, gets through the phone menu, explains the problem, and when the airline needs the traveler, it rings your phone so you can join the call, verify yourself and pay. Then it reports back with the outcome and the transcript.

If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:

Call American Airlines reservations at 800-433-7300. At the menu, say "book a held reservation." I have a held reservation, confirmation code [code], and a flight credit, number [13 digits], in my name. Ask the agent to apply the credit and ticket the reservation with no changes to the flights. Ask whether any part of the original ticket shows as used, what the credit is worth, and what the balance will be. Before I pay, ask what happens if I cancel within 24 hours. When they need to verify me or take a card, connect me. Never read or ask for a card number yourself.

3:04 AI agent: One sec. I'm getting [name removed] on the line. I'm [name removed]'s assistant. I don't have a separate name to provide.

3:14 Representative: Okay, sure.

Our caller rings the traveler, who doesn't answer.

About 89 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

3:22 Representative: Can you please help me with the flight credit number?

3:27 AI agent: Yeah, sure. It's [flight credit number removed].

About 15 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

3:36 Representative: Thank you for providing the ticket number. Can you please confirm the passenger's name under this flight credits?

3:44 AI agent: Yeah, it's [name removed].

About 15 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

4:17 Representative: I'm still checking. Just give me a moment.

4:21 AI agent: Sure.

4:21 Representative: So after applying the flight credits, the remaining amount is $304.79 US dollars that the passenger needs to pay with the credit card. So are you ready?

4:34 AI agent: One second. [name removed] isn't available right now. Is there a way he can call back to complete the card payment, or can you hold the reservation with the credit applied?

4:48 Representative: Actually, once the passenger will be available and call back us, then we can proceed with the card details, so we can make the payment. Otherwise, the whole reservation will be cancelled automatically, because we won't be able to hold the reservation after applying the credits.

5:09 AI agent: Gotcha. Can he just call this same number back to finish the payment?

5:16 Representative: I wish I could do that, but we do not have the option to call back. Passenger needs to call back on the same line.

5:25 AI agent: Okay. One moment. Okay, got it. Before we disconnect, can you tell me your agent name or ID, and is the credit still unapplied until he calls back?

5:36 Representative: So I can only share you my name, which is [name removed, spelled out].

5:43 AI agent: Okay. And is the credit still unapplied until he calls back?

5:48 Representative: Yes, definitely. The credits will be valid once the passenger will call back.

5:56 AI agent: Great, thank you.

5:59 Representative: You're welcome. I hope I have answered all questions today regarding the flight credits.

6:05 AI agent: Yeah, that's all I needed. Thanks. Bye!

1:45 Representative: Thank you for calling American Airline. You are speaking with [name removed]. How may I help you to book a new reservation?

1:50 AI agent: Hi, this is [name removed]'s assistant. I was hoping to get some help with two held reservations, one under code [record locator removed], and the other is [record locator removed], and a flight credit we're trying to apply.

2:06 Representative: Well, I'm so sorry. Could you explain that one more time, please? What kind of reservation do you have? I mean, you want to make...

2:12 AI agent: Yeah, they're both held reservations. We just need to ticket them as they are, and apply a flight credit to the first one. No changes to flights.

2:22 Representative: Okay, I got your point. So you want to use the flight credit to make a new reservation, right?

2:29 AI agent: Exactly, yeah.

2:30 Representative: Okay, so may I get the booking confirmation now, please? For first one.

2:34 AI agent: Sure. The first one is under confirmation [record locator removed].

2:40 Representative: [record locator readback removed], right?

2:47 AI agent: That's right.

2:48 Representative: And so on this, you want to apply the flight credit, right?

2:54 AI agent: Exactly. The flight credit's number is [flight credit number removed], from a cancelled BNA to LGA round trip.

3:05 Representative: Well, ma'am, it seems [unclear] speak too fast. [flight credit number readback removed].

About 16 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

3:21 Representative: May I have the passenger name, please?

3:23 AI agent: [name removed].

3:26 Representative: Thank you so much. And I can see that flight, this flight was used partially. From Nashville to LaGuardia, it was used, and from LaGuardia to Nashville, it is still okay. So this can be used. And okay. And for this, what, I mean... So what would be the origin and destination for this flight credit? The same, the LaGuardia to Nashville?

3:55 AI agent: Yeah, I'm checking on that. Actually, our records show the passenger canceled before departure, so it shouldn't have been partially used. The original trip was Nashville to LaGuardia and back, BNA to LGA, then LGA to BNA. Can you check why it's showing partially used?

4:14 Representative: Well, I do not have the history, but I can see the ticket image, and it says the flight was on 21st of September, from Nashville to LaGuardia, departing 6:10 am, flight number [flight number removed]. And the status says used.

4:35 AI agent: Hmm, one sec, let me get [name removed] on the line. One sec, getting [name removed] on the line.

4:41 Representative: Okay.

Our caller rings the traveler, who joins.

About 19 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

4:43 Traveler: Hello? Hello?

4:44 Representative: Hello?

4:45 Traveler: Hey, how are you?

4:49 Representative: Yes, good morning, sir. I do have the ticket number, which starts with the [flight credit number removed]. You had a flight on 21st of September from Nashville to LaGuardia, departing 6:10 am. I was speaking with a lady just a moment ago, I think she was your assistant. So she says that this ticket has not been used, the booking was cancelled prior to flight departure. But in our record, it says the flight from Nashville to LaGuardia was used. So just want to know that, did you use the first leg of the flight?

5:29 Traveler: Yes, yes.

5:33 Representative: Okay. And now you want to make the reservation from LaGuardia to Nashville?

5:38 Traveler: No, no, I want to make a separate reservation that I already have on hold. But I want to use the credit for that second leg. [personal detail removed], and I got a credit from American. I want to use the credit towards that flight.

5:56 Representative: Okay, so yeah, yes, I also, I'm aware of that, that you already have reservations on hold. So do you have the booking confirmation? Like the lady, if you can disconnect the call to that lady. Was that an AI or like the...

6:11 Representative: You can just transfer the call, connect the call to the lady, please.

6:15 Traveler: I can just finish it off here, if I already have you.

6:21 Representative: Okay. Do you have the booking confirmation for the rest?

6:25 Traveler: Yeah.

6:26 Representative: Yes, I do. I can see here you have the flight credit for the flight that was from LaGuardia to Nashville on 25th of September. But we cannot calculate the amount, how much it is. So I can just apply this flight credit to make the new reservation, to pay for that, the reservation which is on hold. And the lady mentioned also that you have one separate reservation as well, that's for the different flights. So if you can help me with the booking confirmation...

6:56 Traveler: Yeah, I mean, ideally I can...

7:00 Representative: Yeah, yeah, I'm happy to help you.

7:03 Traveler: I was going to book them separately because my credit wasn't working when I added it to the... So I mean, I would love to merge them if we can.

7:12 Representative: Yes. We do it. That is done from here, so I would be happy to help in this case. So may I just get the reservation code which is on hold now?

7:25 Traveler: Yep, it's [record locator removed].

7:30 Representative: [record locator readback removed]. Okay, thank you so much. [record locator readback removed]. Okay.

7:49 Representative: Okay, on this reservation, can you confirm the passenger's first name and the last name and the date of birth, just to verify?

7:57 Traveler: Yeah, it's [name and date of birth removed].

8:02 Representative: Thank you so much. And if you can let me know the complete flight details, I mean the origin and destination, please.

8:09 Traveler: Nashville to Raleigh.

8:11 Representative: Okay. All right, so let me just apply that flight credit, and there would be remaining balances, I believe, because I can see on this reservation that the flight amount is $578.79, okay?

8:30 Traveler: Okay, that's fine. Yeah, hopefully we can just confirm the other reservation with my wife, and we can merge them, so we're on the same reservation as well.

8:38 Representative: Okay, sure, sure.

The representative works in the system, reading some screen messages aloud.

About 43 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

8:55 Representative: What is wrong with this?

About 13 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

9:02 Representative: Well, I'm so sorry. Like, it seems there's a system error, okay? There's a latency in the system, so I would just request you to please stay on the line.

9:12 Traveler: Oh, that's weird.

9:17 Representative: Yeah, I just clicked on okay, but it doesn't move further. I don't know why.

More screen messages, read aloud.

About 40 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

9:54 Representative: It seems I need to call one of the departments. May I place your call on hold for some time, please, for two to four minutes, while I call one of the departments to get help?

10:03 Traveler: Sure.

10:03 Representative: Thank you.

On hold.

14:25 Representative: Thank you for staying on hold. Well, I'm so sorry for the long hold, sir, and I appreciate your time and patience. Sir, I need to call one more department to get this problem fixed. So I just want you to [unclear] hold for four to five minutes, sir. Okay?

14:41 Traveler: No problem.

14:44 Representative: Thank you so much, sir.

On hold, with music from 16:15. The traveler hands the call back to our caller at 17:10.

17:57 Representative: Thank you for staying on hold.

18:00 AI agent: Hi, I'm back on for [name removed]. Yeah, could you explain how the credit was applied and what the cancellation fee was?

18:09 Representative: Well, when I spoke with the passenger, like, he informed to me that the flight was actually partially used, okay? And on the new reservation, we are utilizing the flight credit. And for this flight, I can see here the fare [unclear] difference is $284. So that has to be collected from the card, and then we can confirm this reservation.

18:37 AI agent: Hmm, okay. Let me get [name removed] on real quick, one sec. Hmm, that doesn't match our cancellation email. So the [record locator removed] trip was cancelled before departure on September 22nd, and [name removed] didn't fly either segment. Could you check whether the credit is being marked partially used by mistake, and give the line-by-line value from the original $576.80? Just a sec.

19:05 Representative: Well, I did confirm with the passenger. He agreed. He says that yes, the ticket was partially used. And the balance is for the remaining flight, and that has to be utilized, or that has to be used on this reservation.

The traveler rejoins at 19:16.

19:23 Traveler: Hey, yeah, that's fine. No problem.

19:28 Representative: So shall I just go ahead and [unclear] the amount of $284.90 to confirm this reservation?

19:34 Traveler: Yep.

19:37 Representative: Sure. Thank you so much.

About 55 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

19:49 Representative: Just a moment, please.

About 71 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

20:01 Voice on the line: Do you have a card that you can use?

20:04 Traveler: I'm not giving you that yet.

About 15 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

20:09 Representative: All right, so may I get the zip code for billing address to collect the payment, please?

20:13 Traveler: Yeah, it's [ZIP code removed].

20:18 Representative: Thank you so much, sir. Nashville, Tennessee.

20:25 Representative: And the email address, sir, on which we can send the booking confirmation?

20:29 Traveler: [email address removed].

About 25 seconds of silence on the line is cut here.

20:47 Representative: All right, then. Can you also confirm the billing address, please?

20:52 Traveler: [billing address removed].

21:06 Representative: And it says the phone number is incorrect. May I get the phone number, please?

21:11 Traveler: [phone number removed].

21:16 Representative: Thank you so much. So may I get the credit card to collect the payment, please?

21:23 Traveler: [card number removed].

21:24 Representative: The credit card number?

21:26 Traveler: Yeah, it's [card number removed].

21:34 Representative: Expiration date, please?

21:39 Traveler: [expiration date removed].

21:41 Representative: Name on the card?

21:43 Traveler: Just my first and last name. [name removed].

21:48 Representative: Security number, please?

21:51 Traveler: [security code removed].

21:53 Representative: All right, so $284.80 [or $284.90, unclear] will be charged on this card to confirm this reservation. Shall I proceed further, please?

22:05 Traveler: Can I cancel within 24 hours and get all the money back?

22:09 Representative: Well, this is a main cabin fare, so... But the flight credit is utilized. You will get the trip credit.

22:23 Traveler: I'm going to hold on this purchase for now. Maybe I'll call back later.
