Best Buy return policy: past the return window or without a receipt, from two real calls
Best Buy's own return policy, quoted, plus two recorded calls to Best Buy customer service asking what happens after the 15 day window, who can approve an exception, and how a purchase is found without a receipt.
The short answer: the Best Buy return policy gives 15 days for most products, counted from "the day you receive your product". My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members get 60 days. Activatable devices like phones get 14 days, and Verizon activatable devices get 30 days for everyone. Past the window, a Best Buy agent told us "there's only one exception that can be done": a store manager can approve it at their own discretion, "only if the item is unopened." Calling doesn't help. "You would need to be at the store physically."
Without a receipt, another agent said Best Buy finds the purchase with "just your phone number, first and last name, and email," and that not finding it is "highly impossible." Best Buy's policy page is stricter about returns with no proof of purchase: those "will be in the form of store credit," and "may be denied or limited."
We called Best Buy customer service at 1-888-237-8289 (1-888-BEST BUY) twice on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at about 5:24 and 5:31 pm Central, with call4me placing the calls. They were general questions for this guide, with no order or account involved. An AI assistant answers first. Ask it for a live agent and it transfers you: a person answered at 3:15 on the second call and at 4:19 on the first.
What Best Buy's return policy says
From Best Buy's return and exchange policy, checked October 24, 2026 (the page shows "Effective date: February 23, 2026"):
| Standard | My Best Buy Plus and Total members | |
|---|---|---|
| Most products | 15 days | 60 days |
| Activatable devices | 14 days | 14 days |
| Verizon activatable devices | 30 days | 30 days |
- When the clock starts: "the time period begins the day you receive your product."
- Longer windows for everyone: litter boxes 90 days; pet training devices and hearing aids 60 days.
- Shorter: "Products in Halloween Decorations and Christmas Decorations categories can be returned within 15 days for all customers," members included.
- Marketplace: "My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total extended return timeframes do not apply to any Marketplace purchases."
- Restocking fees: $45 on activatable devices (not prepaid phones), and 15% of the price on drones, digital cameras, camera lenses, camcorders, projectors, golf launch monitors, mobility scooters, special-order products and a few other categories. "There is no restocking fee if the product is unopened," or for purchases in AL, CO, HI, IA, MS, OH, OK or SC.
- No proof of purchase: "Reimbursements on returns lacking proof of purchase may require an email address, will be in the form of store credit, may be denied or limited, and state sales taxes and fees will not be reimbursed."
- Refunds: Best Buy "will reimburse you for returned items in the same way you paid for them." Mailed returns are processed in 7 to 10 business days. Cash over $800, or a check or non-logo debit card over $250, is refunded by check within 10 business days.
- Where: "Return any in-store or online purchase from Best Buy to any Best Buy store," or ship it with a free prepaid FedEx label from your account. Major appliances, TVs over 50 inches, kegerators and SodaStream makers can't be shipped back.
The policy page doesn't describe exceptions past the window or mention a manager. That part comes from the calls.
Listen: returning after the window (6 minutes 55 seconds)
The second call, the one about exceptions past the return window. One silence under a second covers the agent's first name. Nothing else is muted or cut.
- 0:03 "Thanks for calling Best Buy. I'm your AI customer care assistant"
- 0:21 Our caller asks for a live agent about exceptions past the return window
- 1:01 "I don't see an account associated with the number you're calling from." It reads the 15 day rule and says exceptions are on bestbuy.com
- 1:30 Our caller asks again for a live agent. A recorded notice about Pokemon cards and Zelda inventory, then "There's a short wait right now"
- 3:15 A Best Buy agent answers
- 3:47 "There's only one exception that can be done, and it is mostly done by a store manager"
- 4:10 "It's only a store manager"
- 4:21 Calling doesn't help: "You would need to be at the store physically"
- 4:57 Defective past the window: the manufacturer's warranty first, then Geek Squad protection
- 5:59 Plus and Total: 60 days to return to a store
- 6:27 No receipt: "if we are able to then pull it up on our side, we are then able to assist with the return"
What the Best Buy agents told us
From the second call, about the return window:
- Exceptions are a store manager's call. "If it is an exception after the return window has been ended, there's only one exception that can be done, and it is mostly done by a store manager. But also, it is not something compulsory. They do then do that out of their own discretion, and only if the item is then unopened."
- A phone agent can't approve one. Asked whether she could, or only a store manager: "It's only a store manager."
- Go in person. Asked whether calling helps: "No, I'm so sorry. So, mostly, you would need to be at the store physically to then have that done."
- Defective just past the window: warranty first. "We would advise reaching out to the manufacturer first, and if maybe they are not able to help, then if you do have a plan, or a membership, or extended protection through Best Buy, we do then assist," or Geek Squad helps with the repair.
- Membership windows: "The normal Best Buy customer, you do have a standard return window of just 15 days." With Plus or Total, she said "an additional 60 days." The policy page says 60 days in total, not 60 on top of 15.
From the first call, about receipts and refunds:
- No receipt: to look up a purchase, "just your phone number, first and last name, and email."
- If it can't be found: "That's highly impossible, ma'am. So, if you made a purchase at Best Buy, either if it's an over-the-counter purchase, online order, or store order, the purchase will always be on the system." She added that you "need to have a profile."
- Refunds go "back to the original form of payment." "24 hours for our end to process the funds," then a "maximum of 7 to 10 business days for the money to reflect back into your account."
- Online orders: start the return "on the Best Buy website or on the app," then print a shipping label.
How to return something to Best Buy after the window
Putting the policy and the calls together:
- Check your window first. 15 days, or 60 if you're a Plus or Total member. It starts the day you received the item. If you're inside it, no exception is needed.
- If it's unopened, go to a store and ask for the store manager. That's the one exception the agent described, at the manager's discretion. Bring the item in its packaging and the card you paid with.
- Don't expect the phone line to approve it. Both the AI assistant and the agent pointed to the store or bestbuy.com.
- If it's defective, use the warranty. Contact the manufacturer first. If you have a Geek Squad protection plan or a Best Buy membership, Best Buy may repair it.
Returning to Best Buy without a receipt
- Your Best Buy account is the receipt. The agent said a purchase is found with your phone number, name and email. The policy page asks you to bring "your packing slip (if you received one), or your receipt," and the credit card you paid with, "for faster processing."
- If there's truly no proof of purchase, the policy page says you get store credit, maybe not the full amount, and no sales tax back, and it can be refused. Neither agent mentioned that, so it's worth knowing before you go.
Listen: receipts and refunds (6 minutes 28 seconds)
The first call. Two silences, about a second each, cover the agent's first name.
- 0:57 The AI assistant gives the windows: 15 days, "usually" 60 for Plus or Total, 14 for activatable devices, 30 for Verizon devices
- 1:20 Asked about exceptions: "I can't confirm an exception path or who would approve one from what I have here, so I don't want to guess for your guide"
- 4:19 A Best Buy agent answers
- 4:38 Looking up a purchase: "Just your phone number, first and last name, and email"
- 5:03 "That's highly impossible, ma'am"
- 5:28 Refund timing: 24 hours, then up to 7 to 10 business days
- 6:01 Online returns: the website or the app, then a shipping label
Getting to a person at Best Buy
- Call 1-888-237-8289. "Hi, thanks for calling Best Buy. I'm your AI customer care assistant." It's a voice assistant, not a keypad menu.
- Say what it's about and ask for a live agent. On both calls, saying it was about a return and asking for a live agent got a transfer. The second time it asked "making changes to an order, a return, or something else?" first, and offered to text a link to bestbuy.com/returns.
- Hold. A recorded notice plays about Pokemon cards and Zelda inventory, then "There's a short wait right now." About a minute on the second call, about 2 minutes on the first.
The AI assistant checks the number you call from: "I don't see an account associated with the number you're calling from." If you call from the phone on your Best Buy account, it may find your orders. We didn't test that. Best Buy's policy page lists the number. We didn't find phone hours on bestbuy.com, and both of our calls went through on a Saturday evening. For how Best Buy compares with other companies we've called, see our hold times.
Where our caller fell short
- On the first call, it never asked the agent about exceptions. The AI assistant said it couldn't answer that and transferred us for exactly that question. Once a person answered, our caller asked about receipts, refunds and online returns, and then ended the call. That's why we called a second time (call
call_v47988kj4uwlr41c, the first recording above). - It didn't push on store credit. The policy page says no-proof returns get store credit. Our caller asked about it, but took "we are then able to assist" and moved on.
- It didn't correct "an additional 60 days." The policy says 60 days in total.
Have your agent make this call
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. More recorded calls like this are on an AI that calls customer service for you. If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call Best Buy at 1-888-237-8289. An AI assistant answers: say it's about a return and ask for a live agent. Ask about returning [item], bought [date] at [store or bestbuy.com]. Ask whether it's still in my return window, and if not, whether an exception is possible and who can approve it. Ask what they need to find the purchase without a receipt and how the refund will be issued. Don't agree to store credit or a repair without asking me.
Smaller companies sometimes do approve late returns over the phone: see how a call got an Aquasana return approved after 90 days. For Costco, where most items have no window at all, see the Costco return policy, from a recorded call.

0:03 Best Buy: Hi. Thanks for calling Best Buy. I'm your AI customer care assistant, and this call may be recorded to improve your experience. By continuing, you agree to the terms of use and privacy policy on bestbuy dot com. Para español, diga español. Now, what can I help you with?
0:21 Caller: Hi. I have a general question about return exceptions past the return window. Can you connect me with a live agent, please?
0:30 Best Buy: Sounds like you want to speak to a live agent. Let me know what you're calling about, and I will figure out the best way to help.
0:38 Caller: I'm calling to ask about exceptions for returns after the return window ends, and I'd like to speak to a live agent about that.
0:50 Best Buy: To connect you to the right person, could you tell me if you're calling about making changes to an order, a return, or something else?
0:59 Caller: It's about a return.
1:01 Best Buy: I don't see an account associated with the number you're calling from. You can return or exchange most purchases within 15 days at any Best Buy store, or ship it back using a prepaid label you can print from our website. For more details, including exceptions, you'll need to go to bestbuy dot com slash returns. Could I send you a one-time text with a link to that page?
1:30 Caller: No, thanks. Could you connect me with a live agent to talk about it?
1:41 Best Buy: Okay, let's get you the support you need. If you are calling about Pokemon cards, our agents don't have additional inventory or release information beyond what's posted online. If you are calling in for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo Switch 2, we can't share information about in-store inventory levels. We encourage you to pre-order and select store pickup. You'll be able to pick up the game during our late-night opening event, so you can get your hands on the game as soon as it's available. There's a short wait right now. Someone will be with you soon. Thanks for your patience.
[Hold, about 1 minute.]
3:15 Agent: Hello, and thank you very much for calling Best Buy. Hi, you are through to [name], and I do see here that you are calling in in regards to an exception for a return.
3:28 Caller: That's right. Yeah, I'm putting together a guide, and I wanted to ask about returns past the return window. So first, if something's a few days past the 15-day window, can Best Buy ever make an exception?
3:44 Agent: Okay, on our side, mostly, if it is an exception after the return window has been ended, there's only one exception that can be done, and it is mostly done by a store manager. But also, it is not something compulsory. They do then do that out of their own discretion, and only if the item is then unopened.
4:03 Caller: Got you. So, who can actually approve that exception? Could you approve it, or only a store manager, or is that not possible?
4:10 Agent: It's only a store manager.
4:13 Caller: Okay, does calling help at all?
4:21 Agent: No, I'm so sorry. So, mostly, you would need to be at the store physically to then have that done. And again, it is mostly an exception only if the item is then unopened.
4:36 Caller: Okay, so they should go to a store, and the manager decides. And if the item is defective, but it's past the window, what are the options instead? Would it be a manufacturer warranty, or Geek Squad, or a protection plan?
4:51 Agent: Okay, so if it is something that is defective just a few days after purchase, or just outside the return window, it would mostly then be something that has been wrong with the item from the manufacturer. So, they would then make use of the manufacturer's warranty. And if, again, they do have extended protection, like maybe the Geek Squad protection, mostly we would look into it, or try to repair it. However, with just a few days from the actual purchase, mostly there is a defect from the manufacturer directly. So, we would advise reaching out to the manufacturer first, and if maybe they are not able to help, then if you do have a plan, or a membership, or extended protection through Best Buy, we do then assist, or the Geek Squad then does have that done for you, or assist with the repair.
5:44 Caller: Okay, that helps. Do regular My Best Buy members have the same 15 days, and does Plus or Total give 60 days?
5:55 Agent: Yes, so with the Best Buy, well, the normal Best Buy membership, or the normal Best Buy customer, you do have a standard return window of just 15 days. And if you have either the Best Buy Plus, or the My Best Buy Total, you do then have an additional 60 days to then have the item then returned to the store.
6:15 Caller: Okay, and is there a different rule for returns without a receipt, like store credit, or using an ID?
6:25 Agent: Okay, so if you no longer have the receipt, but we are able to then pull it up on our side, we are then able to assist with the return, if you may not have the receipt for the item that you're trying to return.
6:42 Caller: Okay, that's everything I needed. Thanks so much for your help.
6:47 Agent: All right, great. Thank you, and I do hope you enjoy your day.

0:04 Best Buy: Hi.
I have some general questions about your return policy. Could I speak with a representative, please?
0:28 Best Buy: Just a moment while I check your information. You're asking about return policy, so first I need to tell whether this is a general question or about a specific order. Is this about the rules in general, or do you want me to check a return for something you bought?
0:47 Caller: It's a general question. I'm putting together a guide about returns.
0:57 Best Buy: Most items have a 15-day return window, and if the purchase was eligible under Plus or Total, that usually extends to 60 days. Activatable devices are different, though. Those are generally 14 days, and Verizon activatable devices are 30 days. If you want, I can also send the returns page by text, or if you're just writing the guide, I can answer a more specific return question.
1:19 Caller: Sure, thanks. If something's a little past the return window, say a few days, is there any way to get an exception, and who would approve that?
1:28 Best Buy: Let me check what options there might be in that situation. I can't confirm an exception path or who would approve one from what I have here, so I don't want to guess for your guide. If you want, I can connect you with a live agent who can speak to late return exceptions more directly.
1:47 Caller: Yeah, that'd be great. Could you connect me with a live agent?
1:54 Best Buy: I'll connect you with a support specialist who can help with your request. [The same notice about Pokemon cards and Zelda inventory.] Please stay on the line for someone who can help. Thanks for your patience.
[Hold, about 2 minutes.]
4:19 Agent: Best Buy Primary Care. My name is [name]. How can I help you today?
4:23 Caller: Hi, thanks for taking my call. I have some general questions about Best Buy's return policy. So, if someone doesn't have a receipt, can Best Buy look up the purchase? What would they need for that?
4:38 Agent: Just your phone number, first and last name, and email.
4:44 Caller: Got it, thanks. And if they can't find the purchase, what happens then? Is there any kind of store credit option or ID requirement?
4:54 Agent: If we can't find the purchase on the system?
5:03 Agent: That's highly impossible, ma'am. So, if you made a purchase at Best Buy, either if it's an over-the-counter purchase, online order, or store order, the purchase will always be on the system.
5:15 Caller: Okay, great.
5:16 Agent: Because you need to have a profile. Yes, ma'am.
5:20 Caller: Good to know. Another one: how is the refund issued, and how long does it usually take?
5:28 Agent: Refund goes back to the original form of payment. So, whichever credit card was used to purchase the item, that's where the refund goes back to. And the process of the refund is 24 hours for our end to process the funds. Maximum of 7 to 10 business days for the money to reflect back into your account.
5:48 Caller: Great, thank you. One more: can someone start a return by phone for an online order, or do they need to go to the store or mail it?
6:01 Agent: You can start the return order online on the Best Buy website, or on the app. And then you print out a shipping label, then you can go ship the item [unclear], and then you're sorted.
6:12 Caller: Awesome, that's clear. Thanks so much for your help. I think that's everything I needed.
6:18 Agent: No worries, ma'am. Thank you very much for calling Best Buy Primary Care. My name is [name], and goodbye.
6:24 Caller: Thank you. Bye.
