Costco return policy: returning late or without a receipt, from a real call
Costco's own return policy page, quoted, plus a recorded call to Costco customer service asking what happens past the 90 day electronics window, how a purchase is found without a receipt, and how the refund comes back.
The short answer: the Costco return policy is a satisfaction guarantee with no set time limit on most items. The exceptions are electronics and major appliances, which have 90 days "from the date the member received the merchandise", plus a short list of items with their own rules or no returns at all. Costco's return policy page doesn't mention receipts. On our call, a Costco representative said a purchase is found by your membership card, or by the order number for an online order. The card you paid with "would not help." Refunds go to the original payment or a Costco Shop Card, "your choice", in up to about 10 days, she said.
Past the 90 day window, she said an exception "would be something that has to go through a support team." She didn't say who that team is or what it decides. Warehouse purchases go back to a warehouse in person.
We called Costco customer service at 1-800-774-2678 on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at about 3:28 pm Pacific, with call4me placing the call. It was a general question for this guide, with no membership or purchase involved. A person answered 8 minutes 21 seconds into the call, about 30 seconds after the menu put us in a queue. Most of that time was our caller wandering the phone menu (below).
What Costco's return policy says
From Costco's return policy page, checked October 24, 2026 (the page shows "Published Date 10/02/2025" and "Version 18.0"):
- Membership: "We will cancel and refund your membership fee at any time if you are dissatisfied."
- Merchandise: "We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, and will refund your purchase price," with the exceptions below.
- Electronics, 90 days: "Costco will accept returns within 90 days (from the date the member received the merchandise)" for televisions, projectors, major appliances, computers, touchscreen tablets, smart wearable devices, cameras, drones, camcorders, MP3 players and cell phones. Cell phone "return details will vary by carrier service contract."
- Major appliances in that list are refrigerators above 10 cu. ft., freezers, ranges, cooktops, over-the-range and under-counter microwaves, range hoods, dishwashers, water heaters, washers and dryers.
- Diamonds of 1.00ct or larger need "all original paperwork (IGI and/or GIA certificates)", and the refund comes as a Jewelry Credit Memo after a gemologist inspects the stone.
- No returns: cigarettes and alcohol where the law prohibits it; Special Order Kiosk and Custom Installed Program items made to your specifications (warranty repair or replacement only); airline and live performance tickets, precious metals, Shop Cards, gift cards and ticket items.
- Their own rules: tires and batteries (a product limited warranty), contact lenses, eyeglasses, hearing aids and freight-delivered items each point to separate pages. Recreational carts ordered online have 90 days from receipt.
- Where to return: "Products purchased at a Costco location need to be returned at the returns counter at any Costco warehouse." "Items ordered online can be returned at any Costco warehouse -or- you can initiate a return through Costco.com."
The phone menu says the same in fewer words: "Electronics and major appliances must be returned within ninety days of purchase to receive a refund." Note it says "of purchase", while the web page counts from the day you received the item. For a delivered TV, those can be different dates.
Listen to the call
The whole call, 10 minutes 47 seconds, including the menus our caller went around in. One half second silence covers the representative's first name. Nothing else is muted or cut.
Key presses don't show up in the recording, so the quiet gaps between menus are our caller pressing keys.
- 0:00 "Costco Wholesale." The main menu, options 1 to 5
- 3:10 The recorded returns message: "Electronics and major appliances must be returned within ninety days of purchase"
- 6:46 "Thank you for calling Costco.com"
- 7:53 "Please hold while your call is being transferred to the next available Costco representative"
- 8:21 A representative answers
- 8:39 Past the 90 day window: "something that has to go through a support team"
- 9:12 Items with no set window: "there shouldn't be" a time limit
- 9:36 No receipt: "the card you used to pay would not help." Bring the membership card or the order number
- 9:54 Refund: original payment or a Costco Shop Card, "up to like ten days, max"
- 10:14 Bought in person, return in person. Bought online, "it would have to be over the phone"
What the Costco representative told us
| Question | Her answer on this call | What costco.com says |
|---|---|---|
| A TV or laptop past 90 days: any exception? | "It would be something that has to go through a support team." | 90 days, no exception process listed |
| Items with no set window: any real time limit? | "No, there shouldn't be, as long as it's not one of the ninety day return items." | No time limit stated for other items |
| No receipt: how is the purchase found? | "The card you used to pay would not help. It would have to be the membership card, or you'd have to have the order number." | The return policy page doesn't mention receipts |
| How is the refund issued? | "The original payment method, or a Costco Shop Card. It'd be your choice." | Online orders: depends on how you paid (below) |
| How long? | "It can take up to like ten days, max." | Online orders: 2 to 3 business days after the carrier scan, then your bank's time |
| By phone or in person? | "You have to go into the warehouse in person if you bought it in person. If you bought it online, it would have to be over the phone." | Online orders can also go back to "any Costco warehouse" or be started on Costco.com |
| Anything to bring for a late or no-receipt return? | "No, not that I can think of." |
Two things to keep in mind:
- She was on the Costco.com side. Our caller ended up in the Costco.com queue, so the person who answered handles website orders. A warehouse returns counter makes the call on warehouse items, and we didn't ask one.
- "Has to go through a support team" isn't a yes. She didn't say whether exceptions past 90 days are granted, by whom, or how often. We'd treat a late electronics return as a request, not a right. For a defect, Costco's free technical and warranty support (below) is the route the menu itself offers.
Returning something without a receipt at Costco
What we heard, put together:
- Bring your membership card. That's what she said the lookup needs.
- For a Costco.com order, have the order number.
- The card you paid with isn't the key. She was specific that it "would not help" find the purchase.
- Take warehouse purchases to the returns counter of any Costco warehouse. Online orders can go to a warehouse too, according to the policy page, even though she told us online orders are handled "over the phone".
If you can't find the purchase at all, ask at the returns counter. We didn't ask what happens then.
Returning something past the window
- Most things don't have a window. Outside the 90 day electronics and appliance list and the excluded items, neither the policy page nor the representative named a time limit.
- For electronics past 90 days, the answer we got was "a support team". Ask at the warehouse returns counter, or call member services and ask for that team by name.
- If it's broken, try warranty support. On our first call today, the menu described "free technical and warranty support for computers, security systems, large appliances, and other electronic items purchased at Costco." The Contact Us page lists that line as 1-866-861-0450, Monday to Sunday 5am to 8pm Pacific.
- Your membership itself can always be refunded. That's in the policy: "at any time if you are dissatisfied."
How long a Costco refund takes
The representative said up to about 10 days. For online orders, Costco's refund timing page breaks it down:
- UPS return label: refund issued "2-3 business days after the label has been scanned by UPS". Freight pickup: "2 business days after the carrier takes the item". "Some items may require an additional 3-10 business days for verification."
- Then, by payment type: a card refund "will appear on your card statement in accordance with the policies of your financial institution." A check arrives "in the mail within 15 business days." "The Shop Card used for the order will be reloaded with the refund amount within 48 hours."
The Costco phone menu, and the route that reached a person
- Call 1-800-774-2678. "For information including membership, executive two percent rewards, and Costco services, press one." Press 2 for the Citi Visa, Shop Card and payment options, press 3 for "Costco dot com orders, returns, and all other website inquiries", press 4 for "warehouse product and returns information, or for your local Costco phone number, business hours, and address", press 5 for Costco Travel.
- Option 4 is recordings. It leads to "returns, warranty, or technical support information", then to a recorded returns message and a transfer to technical and warranty support. It never offered a person for returns. On an earlier call today, that transfer is where the call ended.
- Option 3 reached a person. Our caller got there after going around the other menus. From the prompts that followed, it pressed 3, then 2 ("product information, or assistance placing an order online"), then 1 ("product information"), then 1 again. Then: "Please hold while your call is being transferred to the next available Costco representative." She answered about 30 seconds later.
The number and hours are from Costco's Contact Us page, checked October 24, 2026: Membership and Warehouse, 1-800-774-2678, "Mon - Fri: 6am - 6pm PT" and "Sat - Sun: 8am - 5pm PT". For a Costco.com order, the page lists 1-800-955-2292, "Mon - Fri: 5am - 8pm PT; Sat - Sun: 5am - 7pm PT", which is likely the more direct line. We didn't call it.
In our Costco customer service guide, pressing nothing at all on the same number reached a membership representative in 14 minutes 9 seconds. For how both compare with other companies, see our hold times.
Where our caller fell short
- It ignored its own brief at the menu. We told it to press nothing, the route that worked before. It spoke to the menu instead ("Let's try returns for the local warehouse"), pressed into option 4's recordings, and spent about 6 minutes going around menus before reaching Costco.com. The first call we placed today did the same and ended at the technical support transfer without a person (call
call_bsckbxrt5w5zf9rx). - It didn't follow up on "a support team". A good next question was "which team, and how do I reach it?" It moved on.
- It didn't ask a warehouse. For warehouse returns, the returns counter decides. Our questions went to the Costco.com side.
What wasn't answered
- Who the "support team" is, and whether exceptions past 90 days are ever approved.
- What happens if the membership lookup finds nothing.
- Why she said online returns are "over the phone" when the policy page also allows a warehouse return or starting one on Costco.com.
Have your agent make this call
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. More recorded calls like this are on an AI that calls customer service for you. If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call Costco at 1-800-774-2678 (Mon-Fri 6am-6pm, Sat-Sun 8am-5pm Pacific). For an online order, press 3; for membership, enter my member number [number] when asked. Ask about returning [item], bought [date] at [warehouse or Costco.com]. If it's past the window, ask whether an exception is possible, who decides it and how to reach them. Ask what they need to find the purchase without a receipt and how the refund will be issued. Don't agree to anything without asking me, and ring me to join if they need to verify my identity.
Returning something to a smaller company past its window works differently: see how a call got an Aquasana return approved after 90 days. And for a Costco Tire Center order, see cancelling a Costco tire appointment and getting the refund. For the Best Buy side of this, see the Best Buy return policy, from two recorded calls.

8:21 Representative: Thank you for calling Costco. This is [name]. How can I help you?
8:24 Caller: Hi, I'm putting together a little guide about Costco returns, and I was hoping to ask a few general questions just about how the policy works. Would that be okay?
8:36 Representative: Okay, sure.
8:38 Caller: Thanks. So first, if something like a TV or a laptop is past the 90-day electronics window, is there any way to get an exception, and who makes that call? The warehouse, a manager, or the phone line?
8:54 Representative: It would be something that has to go through a support team.
9:01 Caller: Okay, good to know. And then for items without a set return window, is there any actual time limit in practice that people should know about?
9:12 Representative: No, there shouldn't be, as long as it's not one of the 90-day return items. Did you have a certain item that you were needing to return?
9:21 Caller: No, no, just in general. And then if someone doesn't have their receipt, can the purchase be looked up? And what would they need to do that? Like a membership card or the card they used to pay?
9:36 Representative: The card you used to pay would not help. It would have to be the membership card, or you'd have to have the order number.
9:42 Caller: Okay. And when the refund is issued, is it sent back to the original payment method, or cash, or a Costco Shop Card? And how long does that usually take?
9:54 Representative: It would be the original payment method or a Costco Shop Card. It'd be your choice. And it can take up to like 10 days, max.
10:04 Caller: Great, thank you. And then can a return or a refund in any case be handled over the phone, or do they need to come into the warehouse in person?
10:14 Representative: You have to go into the warehouse in person if you bought it in person. If you bought it online, it would have to be over the phone.
10:20 Caller: Okay, that's helpful. And then anything else that would be good for a member to bring if they're returning something late or without a receipt?
10:33 Representative: No, not that I can think of.
10:36 Caller: Awesome, that's everything I needed. Thank you so much for your help. Bye.
10:43 Representative: You're welcome. Is there anything else?
10:45 Caller: Nope.
