Home Depot customer service number: how to talk to a real person
We called The Home Depot twice with general questions for this guide. 1-800-HOME-DEPOT left us on hold until a survey picked up. The online orders line reached a live representative in 1 minute 34 seconds. Here are both recordings, the menus, and what the representative said, checked against homedepot.com.
The short answer: call 1-800-430-3376, The Home Depot's online orders and customer support line. It's open 7 days a week, 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Eastern. A voice assistant answers. Ask for a representative, say no to texting instead, and stay on the line. On our call, a live representative answered 1 minute 34 seconds after the call connected.
The better-known number, 1-800-HOME-DEPOT (1-800-466-3337), didn't get us to anyone. Earlier the same day it put us through two keypad menus, said our hold "may be less than three minutes," played hold music until about 7 minutes in, went silent for about 15 minutes, and then sent us to a customer satisfaction survey. No person ever came on the line.
Both numbers are on homedepot.com. Its Customer Support Answers page says to call "800-430-3376" and lists "Online orders: 1-800-430-3376" with "We're available 7 days a week, 6am - 2am ET." The same page and the Customer Service Center list three lines:
| Line | Number | What homedepot.com says it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Online orders | 1-800-430-3376 | Online orders |
| 1-800-HOME-DEPOT | 1-800-466-3337 | In-store purchases ("Customer Care" in the phone directory) |
| Major appliances | 1-800-455-3869 | "Most appliances eligible for installation services" |
The one hours line on those pages covers all three. Home Depot's corporate contact page prints 1-800-HOME-DEPOT (1-800-466-3337).
Here's what got us to a person on 1-800-430-3376:
- A voice assistant answers: "How can I help you today?" Say you'd like to speak with a representative (we also said we had general questions about the online orders line).
- "I'll connect you with someone that can help. Would you like to text with us instead of speaking on the phone?" Say no thanks, you'll stay on the line.
- "Okay, just stay on the line and I'll connect you." About half a minute later, a recording: "All of our representatives are currently assisting other customers."
- A representative answered about 26 seconds after that, 1:34 into the call.
What the representative told us (her answers, not official policy; see how they compare with homedepot.com):
- Hours: "From six AM up until 2 AM, Mondays to Sundays."
- Return windows: about 48 hours for major appliances, about 7 days for air conditioners, dehumidifiers and "most lawn mowers," and "between thirty days or sixty days or ninety days" for most other things. A full year if you paid with a Home Depot credit card.
- Receipts: "Not necessarily." She said they can find purchases by order number or phone number.
- Online orders: you can return them to your nearest store, which she called the quickest option, with an "instant credit."
- Refund timing: three to five business days for a UPS or carrier return, up to ten business days for major appliances.
- Checking a gift card: call the gift card and credit card department at 800-677-0232. homedepot.com lists that number for consumer credit card accounts, and sends gift card scam reports to 1-800-HOME-DEPOT (see below).
We called on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at about 3:36 pm and 4:20 pm Pacific (6:36 and 7:20 pm Eastern), with call4me placing the calls. These were general questions for this guide, not about any order, purchase or account, and we gave no personal details. This page is what we heard.
Listen to the call that reached a person
The whole call to 1-800-430-3376, 7 minutes 14 seconds, including the hold and the start of the survey at the end. One silence, under a second at 1:36, covers the representative's first name. Nothing else is muted or cut.

The first live words, at 1:34:
Representative: Welcome to The Home Depot, [name removed] speaking, and how can I take care of you today?
Listen to the call to 1-800-HOME-DEPOT
Our first call, to 1-800-466-3337, 24 minutes 36 seconds, unedited. Nobody answered. The middle of the recording is about 15 minutes of near silence; that's what the line played, not a gap in the file. Nothing is muted.
- 0:00 "Thank you for calling The Home Depot"
- 0:17 We say we have a general question. "Sorry, I couldn't get that."
- 0:26 We say "Representative"
- 0:32 The first keypad menu (6 is customer care)
- 1:05 "I'll connect you with our customer care team," then a second menu
- 2:05 The greeting starts again with a third menu
- 2:34 "Instead of waiting to talk with someone, you can text us instead"
- 2:46 A fourth menu: place an order, an existing order, or self-service
- 3:08 "Your hold time may be less than three minutes"
- 7:07 The hold music stops. About 15 minutes of silence follow
- 22:47 "Welcome to the Home Depot customer satisfaction survey"
- 24:21 "Due to technical difficulties, we cannot offer the survey at this time." The line hangs up
The Home Depot phone menus, step by step
On 1-800-430-3376 (online orders), there was no keypad menu on our call:
- "Thank you for calling The Home Depot. This call may be recorded or used by Home Depot and its authorized vendors. How can I help you today?"
- We asked for a representative. "I'll connect you with someone that can help. Would you like to text with us instead of speaking on the phone?"
- We said we'd stay on the line. "Okay, just stay on the line and I'll connect you."
- Hold, then "All of our representatives are currently assisting other customers. Please hold and your call will be answered in the order it was received." Then a person.
On 1-800-466-3337 (1-800-HOME-DEPOT), the voice assistant said "Para español, oprima 9" and "I can help with order management, installation services, and more." It didn't understand "a general question." Saying "representative" brought up this keypad menu:
- In-home services and installations, press 1
- New or existing orders, product questions, or help with the website, press 2
- Appliance orders or questions about appliances, press 3
- Home Depot protection plans, press 4
- Credit card services, press 5
- Customer care, press 6
After customer care, it read more menus: online orders, appliance issues, credit card, installation or special orders, store experience; then large appliances, other online products, your local store, credit card; then an offer to text instead; then place an order, an order you've already placed, or self-service. Our caller's key presses aren't audible on the recording, so we can't tell you exactly which options it chose after customer care. The menus are there in the recording if you want to hear them in full.
The representative versus homedepot.com
We checked each answer against Home Depot's Return Policy, Refund Policy, Gift Card FAQ and phone directory, all loaded October 13, 2026. Some match, some don't.
| Topic | The representative said | homedepot.com says |
|---|---|---|
| Phone hours | 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., Monday to Sunday | 7 days a week, 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. ET (the Return Policy adds "closed Christmas Day") |
| Most items | "Between thirty days or sixty days or ninety days" | "Most merchandise can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase." The page lists 90, 30, 7 days, 48 hours and 365 days; we saw no 60-day group |
| Major appliances | "About forty eight hours" | 48 hours, for "refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, and over-the-range or built-in microwaves" |
| Air conditioners, dehumidifiers | "About seven days" | 7 days, unused and in the original factory-sealed packaging |
| Lawn mowers | "Most lawn mowers have a one week return window" | Gas-powered mowers are on the 30-day list. We didn't find mowers in the 7-day group |
| Home Depot credit card | 365 days | 365 days for the Consumer Credit Card, Pro Xtra Credit Card or Commercial Account, but not for the 48-hour, 7-day or 30-day items |
| Receipt required? | "Not necessarily." Purchases can be found by order number or phone number | Returns are "within 90 days with proof of purchase." Stores can look up an online purchase "with your credit card, order number, or email." Card and check receipts "may be located in our system within 90 days." Returns without a receipt need a government photo ID and "may be refunded as a Store Credit at the lowest advertised price" |
| Online order to a store | Yes | Yes: "Take your return back to any The Home Depot store for free, even if you purchased online." Bring the receipt or shipping confirmation email, the card you paid with and a valid ID. Major appliances are excluded |
| In-store refund | Instant, "through a store credit" | In-store returns are "processed instantly," and refunds go "to the original form of payment" unless noted. Store credit is for gift card or store credit purchases, or returns without proof of purchase |
| UPS or carrier return | "Three to five business days" | "About 7 business days to process your return," then "up to 10 business days for your bank" |
| Major appliance refund | "Up to ten business days" | Up to 12 business days for Home Depot to process, plus your bank's time |
The refund timing is where they differ most. The website's two steps add up to longer than what the representative told us for a mailed return. The Refund Policy page lists bank times too: up to 10 business days for a credit or debit card, up to 30 business days for a prepaid debit card, instant for cash, and up to 24 hours for a gift card, which is refunded as store credit. For the exact policy, we'd trust the written pages over one phone answer.
Gift cards and scams
We asked how to check whether a Home Depot gift card is authentic and what to do about a suspected scam.
The representative: "They should call our gift card department. So, we do have a Home Depot credit card and gift card department, which can just authenticate that for you." She first said "I think an 833," checked, and then gave 800-677-0232, saying you can call it "anytime" to verify "any gift cards, coupons, or any Home Depot credit cards."
homedepot.com: the phone directory lists 1-800-677-0232 as "Credit Card: Consumer Accounts." It doesn't list a gift card verification line. The Gift Card FAQ says:
- To check a balance, ask a cashier at any store, or go to homedepot.com/gift-cards/balance (account login required).
- If you're the victim of a gift card scam involving a Home Depot gift card, "contact our Customer Care team to report the scam at 1-800-HOME-DEPOT (1-800-466-3337)."
- "Never give your gift card number to anyone over the phone." For more help reporting a scam, it gives the Federal Trade Commission at 877-382-4357.
The Gift Card Scams page says "no legitimate transaction will ever require you to pay specifically with gift cards," and that government agencies "will not ask you to purchase gift cards for any reason." We didn't call 800-677-0232, so we can't tell you whether that line handles gift cards.
What wasn't answered
- Whether 1-800-466-3337 is the right number for general questions. We asked. She said "Yes, ma'am," then described what her own line handles: order tracking, placing orders, "price adjust or price match," general support and formal complaints. We can't tell whether the "yes" was about 1-800-HOME-DEPOT or her line. homedepot.com labels 1-800-466-3337 for in-store purchases and 1-800-430-3376 for online orders.
- Whether the hours are Eastern time. She didn't say. The website does.
- Why the 1-800-HOME-DEPOT hold went silent. We don't know. One call isn't a pattern, but it's why we lead with the other number.
Other ways to reach Home Depot
From homedepot.com's Customer Support Answers page:
- Text "Support" to 38698, "24 hours a day, 7 days a week."
- Live chat with the chat button on homedepot.com, also 24/7. "If chat is unavailable, you can still get help via phone or text."
- Email through the Contact Us form.
Both phone menus we heard also offered to switch the call to text. We didn't try text or chat.
Things we didn't test
- The major appliances line (1-800-455-3869) and the credit card lines.
- Texting instead of waiting. We declined both times.
- Calling 1-800-HOME-DEPOT again, or at a different time. Our one call there was in the early evening Eastern.
- Anything about a real order. We gave no order number, phone number or account details.
How we made these recordings
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. The brief for both calls was to reach a person at Home Depot customer service and ask general questions for this guide. It wasn't allowed to claim to be a customer, give any personal details or agree to anything.
The first call, to 1-800-HOME-DEPOT, went through the menus to a hold and never reached anyone. For the second, we called the online orders number listed on homedepot.com and asked for a representative at the first prompt.
Two things our caller could have done better:
- It didn't follow up on the 1-800-466-3337 question when the answer turned into a description of the line's services.
- It didn't ask the representative to compare her numbers with the website. A follow-up on the lawn mower window or the refund timing might have cleared up the differences above.
For how Home Depot compares with other companies, see our hold times and the companies we've called. For other home stores, we've called Pottery Barn customer service and Wayfair customer service.
Have your agent make this call
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call Home Depot customer support at 1-800-430-3376, between 6 a.m. and 2 a.m. Eastern. A voice assistant answers. Ask for a representative, say no thanks if it offers to text instead, and stay on the line. When a person answers, ask [your question]. Don't give my card number, gift card number or PIN, and don't change, cancel or buy anything unless I've said to.

The transcript follows the recording. "Home Depot" is the voice assistant and recorded messages. "Representative" is the live person. "Caller" is the call4me agent. The representative's name is silenced in the audio and shown in brackets here.
0:00 Home Depot: Thank you for calling The Home Depot. This call may be recorded or used by Home Depot and its authorized vendors. How can I help you today?
0:09 Caller: Hi there. I'm calling with some general questions for a consumer guide on reaching customer service. Could I speak with a representative about the online orders line?
0:21 Home Depot: I'll connect you with someone that can help. Would you like to text with us instead of speaking on the phone?
0:28 Caller: No thanks. I'll stay on the line, please.
0:32 Home Depot: Okay, just stay on the line and I'll connect you.
[Hold, about 33 seconds.]
1:08 Home Depot: All of our representatives are currently assisting other customers. Please hold and your call will be answered in the order it was received.
[Hold, about 20 seconds.]
1:34 Representative: Welcome to The Home Depot, [name removed] speaking, and how can I take care of you today?
1:39 Caller: Hey, thanks for taking my call. I'm putting together a consumer guide about reaching customer service and had a few general questions about this line.
1:51 Representative: Yes, ma'am. And how can I assist you? What would you like to know?
1:56 Caller: Okay, great. What are this line's hours? And is 1-800-466-3337 the right number for general questions?
2:09 Representative: Yes, ma'am. So, I'd say its powers would be to assist customers with getting resolutions, maybe if you'd like to track your order, if you'd like to place an order, if you have any queries, if you'd like maybe for us to price adjust or price match, or for general customer support, whether that's filing a formal complaint or any of the above.
2:33 Caller: Okay. And what hours is this line open?
2:38 Representative: From six AM up until 2 AM, Mondays to Sundays.
2:43 Caller: All right. And what's the general return window for most items?
2:51 Representative: I would say, depending on the item type. For items like air conditioners or dehumidifiers, that's about seven days, along with lawn mowers. Most lawn mowers have a one week return window. For major appliances, so anything like refrigerators, dishwashers, dryers, stoves, microwaves, we have a return window of about forty eight hours. And then, for other appliances, depending on how big or small it is, it would have a manufacturer's warranty, but the Home Depot return window would mostly be between thirty days or sixty days or ninety days. So it goes from forty eight hours to seven days, from seven days to about thirty days, then from thirty days to about ninety days in total. Oh, and then another thing is that if you had purchased something using your Home Depot credit card, then you'd have a three hundred and sixty five day return window. So you have a full year to return that if you purchased it using our credit card.
3:58 Caller: Okay, that's really good to know. And is a receipt required for a return?
4:07 Representative: Not necessarily, depending if you bought that directly from a Home Depot store, but in most cases, as long as you have the order number or if you're able to provide your phone number, then we're able to track all of your orders under your purchase history, using your phone number or your order number.
4:25 Caller: Okay. And can an online order be returned to the store? And how are refunds normally issued for those?
4:35 Representative: Yes, ma'am. You can return an online order to your nearest Home Depot. For an in-store return, that would be the quickest option, the best option we normally advise customers, because you'd get an in-store return, you'd get an instant credit. So that would be instantly refunded through a store credit, and then you'd be able to place an order through the store using the store credit. With other returns regarding the refund, if you maybe return an item through a carrier or through UPS, because we have a UPS drop-off option where customers can just drop that off at their nearest UPS, the refund normally takes between three to five business days. For major appliances, I'd say the refund can take up to ten business days.
5:23 Caller: Got it. One more thing. How could someone check whether a Home Depot gift card is authentic? And what should they do if they think it's a scam?
5:35 Representative: They should call our gift card department. So, we do have a Home Depot credit card and gift card department, which can just authenticate that for you. So you just give them a call. We do have their direct line on the website, but I can always just provide it for you too as well. So that would be, I think, an 833. Let me just check the number here one more time. Yeah, through our Home Depot gift card and credit card department, that would be, sorry, 800, 800-677-0232. Yeah, so you can just call that number anytime to get assistance with verifying any gift cards, coupons, or any Home Depot credit cards, if they're legit.
6:21 Caller: Perfect. That's everything I needed. Thanks so much for your help. Bye.
6:26 Representative: Always a pleasure to assist. If you can please stay on the line to complete the survey, we'd highly appreciate your feedback today. Do you think you'd have a few seconds?
6:33 Caller: Sure, I can do that. Thanks again. Bye.
6:35 Representative: Thank you, thank you. Take care, take care.
6:40 Home Depot survey: Welcome to the Home Depot Customer Satisfaction Survey. Thank you for participating. Please answer the following three questions by touching the touch tone buttons on your phone. How likely are you to shop at the Home Depot the next time you need home improvement products? Five, definitely will. Four, probably will. Three, may or may not. Two, probably will not. One, definitely will not.
