Walmart customer service number: get past the AI agent to a person
We called 1-800-WALMART with general questions for this guide. An AI agent answers first; asking twice for a representative got us a live person. Here's what the rep and the AI each said about hours and refunds, and the full 6 minute recording.
The short answer: Walmart's customer service number is 1-800-925-6278 (1-800-WALMART). The "Walmart AI agent" answers, not a person. To reach a real person, ask for a representative, and when it asks for an order number, say you don't have one and ask again. On our call it transferred us after the second request, a recording said there was one caller ahead of us, and a live representative answered 1 minute 15 seconds into the call.
One thing to know first: earlier the same day, the same line played "I'm sorry. We cannot take your call at this time" and hung up within about 13 seconds, three times. All three of those calls came from one of our phone numbers. Both calls from our other number were answered by the AI agent. Walmart's line refused calls from one of our numbers and answered from another; if you hear that message, try calling from a different phone. That's what we observed on one day, not a Walmart policy we can confirm.
Walmart's contact page says: "You may also contact our customer service team at 1-800-925-6278 (1-800-WALMART)." Its Ask Walmart FAQ says "You can also reach us by calling 800-Walmart (925-6278)."
Here's what got us from the AI agent to a person:
- Call 1-800-925-6278. "Hi, I'm the Walmart AI agent. I'm not perfect, and this call is being recorded to improve quality."
- It asks what it can help with. Say "Could I speak with a representative, please?"
- It asks whether there's a specific order or issue, and for an order number "so I can make sure you get to the right person." Say you don't have an order number and ask for a live representative again.
- "I'm transferring you to the customer support team." Then: "There's one caller ahead of you. Your estimated wait time is approximately one minute."
- A representative answered about 15 seconds after that message.
What the representative told us:
- Hours: two different answers in one breath. "It is 24/7 available, chat and phone calls also." Then: "We operate daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central time." Walmart's AI agent, on a separate call three minutes earlier, gave a third answer: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Central, seven days a week, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. More below.
- Refunds for online orders: "it may take up to seven days," or "up to 10 business days" if the refund is escalated to the account review or billing team.
- Store purchases go to the store. "If your concern is about your purchase in the store, physical store, you need to go to the customer service desk at the store. But if it's online orders, you need to call 1-800-WALMART."
- What to have ready for an online order: "the complete order number," "the specific name of the item," and "the first four letters of the email and also the last four digits of the phone number."
We called on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at about 4:48 pm Pacific (6:48 pm Central), with call4me placing the call. It was a general question for this guide, not about any order or account. This page is what we heard.
Listen to the call
The whole call, 6 minutes 17 seconds, including the hold. Three short silences cover names: under a second for the representative's first name when they introduce themselves, about 2 seconds where our caller said whose assistant it was, and under a second where the representative greeted our caller by that name. Nothing else is muted or cut.
Jump to a moment:
- 0:02 "Hi, I'm the Walmart AI agent"
- 0:15 "Could I speak with a representative, please?"
- 0:24 The AI asks for an order number
- 0:35 "I don't have an order number. Could I get a live representative, please?"
- 0:47 "I'm transferring you to the customer support team"
- 1:00 "There's one caller ahead of you"
- 1:15 A live representative answers
- 1:38 What hours is this line staffed by people?
- 2:16 "Let me check it here," then about 70 seconds of hold
- 4:06 "It is 24/7 available," then "8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central"
- 4:39 Refunds: "up to seven days," or 10 business days if escalated
- 5:10 Store purchases go to the store's customer service desk
- 5:34 What to have ready for an online order
The Walmart phone tree, step by step
It's a voice AI. We didn't hear any keypad options.
- Call 1-800-925-6278. "Hi, I'm the Walmart AI agent. I'm not perfect, and this call is being recorded to improve quality."
- The opening question. On our earlier call from the same number, it said "Para ayuda en español solo pregunte" and asked: "Can I help with tracking an order, making a return, or something else today?" On this call it opened with "I'm glad we could answer your general Walmart questions. Thanks for being a Walmart customer. What else can I help you with today?" It seemed to remember our call from three minutes before.
- Ask for a representative. "Could I speak with a representative, please?"
- The order number check. "Okay, just before I connect you, is there a specific order or issue you wanna talk about? If you have an order number handy, could you share it with me? That way, I can make sure you get to the right person." If your call is about an order, this is when to give the number. We had none.
- Ask again. "It's just a general inquiry for a consumer guide. I don't have an order number. Could I get a live representative, please?"
- The transfer. "Just a sec. I'm transferring you to the customer support team to help you with your issue." Then: "There's one caller ahead of you. Your estimated wait time is approximately one minute. This call and your voice may be recorded for quality or other business purposes, including fraud prevention."
- A person. "Hello, thank you for calling walmart.com."
Hours: three answers
We don't know when Walmart's phone line has people on it. Here's everything we were told on October 13:
| Who said it | Hours |
|---|---|
| The representative | "It is 24/7 available, chat and phone calls also" |
| The representative, a few seconds later | "We operate daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central time" |
| Walmart's AI agent, on a separate call | "Live customer care is staffed seven days a week, six a.m. to nine p.m. Central Time, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas" |
Before answering, the representative said the team works "different shifts" and is "in the Philippines," and put us on hold for about 70 seconds to check. Walmart's contact page and Ask Walmart FAQ don't list phone hours. Our call reached a person at about 6:50 pm Central, which fits every one of these answers. If you need a person, calling between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Central fits all three.
Refunds: the representative versus the AI agent
The representative: "For online orders, it may take up to seven days. Usually if it's escalated to our account review team or to our billing team, it will take up to 10 business days for the reversal of the money to the account."
The AI agent: "For an online order return, refunds to a credit or debit card, PayPal, pay by bank, or OnePay Later typically post within seven days. Refunds to a Walmart gift card, Walmart Cash, or Walmart balance are typically available within three hours."
They agree on seven days for a card. Only the AI mentioned the faster gift card and Walmart Cash option, and only the representative mentioned the 10 business day case. We didn't check either against walmart.com's written return policy.
What the AI agent said on its own
Three minutes before the call above, we called the same number from the same phone and didn't ask for a representative. The AI agent answered our questions itself. This is Walmart's AI, not a person, and its hours don't match what the representative said.
The whole call, 2 minutes 22 seconds. Nothing is muted or cut.
- 0:02 "Hi, I'm the Walmart AI agent"
- 0:50 Hours: "six a.m. to nine p.m. Central Time, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas"
- 1:04 Store questions: "the store locator in the Walmart app or on walmart.com"
- 1:32 Refund timing by payment type
- 2:01 "I don't have a reliable guide for exactly what information callers should have ready"
On store questions, the AI said "this line can help with general Walmart support questions," and that for anything about one store, "like that store's current hours, location, or local details, the most reliable route is the store locator in the Walmart app or on walmart.com." It declined to say what to have ready: "I'd rather not guess for your consumer guide."
"We cannot take your call at this time"
Our first three calls to Walmart that day didn't reach the AI agent. Each played the same recording and hung up about 13 seconds after the line answered:
| Time (Pacific) | Number | From | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11:47 am | 1-800-925-6278 | Our first number | Recording, then hang up |
| 11:48 am | 1-800-966-6546 | Our first number | Recording, then hang up |
| 4:45 pm | 1-800-966-6546 | Our first number | Recording, then hang up |
| 4:45 pm | 1-800-925-6278 | Our second number | AI agent answered |
| 4:48 pm | 1-800-925-6278 | Our second number | AI agent, then a person |
Walmart's line refused calls from one of our numbers and answered from another; if you hear that message, try calling from a different phone. We saw this on one afternoon with two phone numbers. We don't know why Walmart refused the first number, and the recording didn't say. We also never called 1-800-966-6546 from the second number, so we can't say whether that line would have answered.
Here's the 11:47 am call to 1-800-925-6278, the whole 13 seconds. Nothing is muted or cut. The first calls were placed from GitHub Copilot CLI.
- 0:01 "I'm sorry. We cannot take your call at this time"
- 0:05 "If you require further assistance, please visit our website, walmart.com, or the Walmart app"
- 0:11 The recording ends and the line hangs up
There was no greeting before the message, no menu and no hold music.
Other Walmart numbers and help options
| Route | Where Walmart lists it | Did we try it? |
|---|---|---|
| 1-800-925-6278 (1-800-WALMART) | Walmart's contact page and Ask Walmart FAQ | Yes, the call above |
| 1-800-966-6546 (Customer Care) | Walmart.com's Responsible Disclosure and Accessibility Policies page, as of an August 31, 2026 archived copy: "If you experience difficulty accessing our website content, reach out to our Customer Care associates at 1-800-966-6546 for assistance and to provide feedback. For relay service, please dial 711." | Yes, from our first number only. Refused twice |

Beware of fake Walmart calls
Walmart's fraud alerts page says "A trusted company will never ask a customer for highly sensitive information during a call they initiated," and "Don't trust the Caller ID. Fraudsters can manipulate the Caller ID to have it display a legitimate business' name." It also says "Other businesses do not accept payments in the form of Walmart Gift Cards," and "you will never be asked to pay your utility bills, bail money, or bills with Walmart Gift Cards."
Where to report it, from the same page: a scam involving Walmart Gift Cards goes to (888) 537-5503. A fake Walmart email goes to OnlineAbuse@walmart.com, sent "as an attachment," not forwarded or pasted. We didn't call the gift card line.
The representative said that for an online order, the agent will ask for the first four letters of your email and the last four digits of your phone number. That was on a call we placed to Walmart's published number. Nobody asked us for a password, a card number or a code.
What wasn't answered
- Real phone hours. We got three different answers, above.
- Why the first number was refused. The recording gave no reason.
- Refund timing on Walmart's website. We didn't check the written policy.
Things we didn't test
- Asking for a representative at the very first prompt on a call that opens with "tracking an order, making a return, or something else." Our successful call opened differently.
- Giving an order number to the AI agent, which may route you differently.
- The Help Center chat, the app's help options, or ASL video support.
- 1-800-966-6546 from our second number.
How we made this recording
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For this one, the brief was to reach a person at Walmart customer service and ask four general questions for this guide: what hours the line has live people, how long online refunds take, whether store questions belong on this line, and what to have ready. It wasn't allowed to claim to be a customer, give any account or personal details, or agree to any change. The call was billed as 7 minutes.
One thing our caller could have done better: it didn't follow up when the representative gave two different answers about hours. Asking "so is it 24/7, or 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.?" might have settled it.
For how this call compares with other companies, see our hold times and the companies we've called. We've also called Walmart Auto Care Centers for our Walmart oil change prices guide.
Have your agent make this call
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call Walmart customer service at 1-800-925-6278. The Walmart AI agent answers. Ask for a representative. [If it's about an order: give the order number when it asks. / If it's a general question: say there's no order number and ask for a representative again.] When a person answers, ask [your question]. If a recording says Walmart can't take the call and hangs up, tell me exactly what it said. Never read out a password, card number or one-time code, and don't change, cancel or buy anything unless I've said to.

The transcript follows the recording. "Walmart AI" is Walmart's AI agent and its recorded messages. "Representative" is the live person. "Caller" is the call4me agent. Names are silenced in the audio and shown in brackets here. Filler words ("um," "uh") are left out.
0:02 Walmart AI: Hi, I'm the Walmart AI agent. I'm not perfect, and this call is being recorded to improve quality. I'm glad we could answer your general Walmart questions. Thanks for being a Walmart customer. What else can I help you with today?
0:15 Caller: Hi, could I speak with a representative, please?
0:21 Walmart AI: One moment. Okay, just before I connect you, is there a specific order or issue you wanna talk about? If you have an order number handy, could you share it with me? That way, I can make sure you get to the right person.
0:35 Caller: It's just a general inquiry for a consumer guide. I don't have an order number. Could I get a live representative, please?
0:45 Walmart AI: Just a sec. I'm transferring you to the customer support team to help you with your issue.
1:00 Walmart recording: There's one caller ahead of you. Your estimated wait time is approximately one minute. This call and your voice may be recorded for quality or other business purposes, including fraud prevention.
1:15 Representative: Hello, thank you for calling walmart.com. My name is [name removed], and I'm here to assist. May I have your name, please?
1:24 Caller: Hi, I'm [muted: the name of the person we were calling for]. I'm just calling with a general question for a consumer guide.
1:33 Representative: A general question. May I know your question?
1:38 Caller: Yeah, what hours is this line staffed by live people, and in what time zone?
1:47 Representative: Can you repeat that?
1:49 Caller: Yeah, what hours is this line staffed by actual people, and in what time zone?
1:59 Representative: You mean the Walmart customer service desk, about the online orders?
2:10 Caller: I mean this customer service phone line.
2:16 Representative: Oh, I see, I see. Okay. Let me check it here, okay? Because we usually have different shifts here in our... We also, in the Philippines. So our time zone here is the Philippines. So I'll check it here, 'cause we do have different shifts, alright? Please wait.
2:54 Caller: Sure, no problem.
[Hold, about 70 seconds.]
4:06 Representative: Hello, [name removed]. So we usually have Central time for the time zone. So it is 24/7 available, chat and phone calls also. So we operate daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central time.
4:29 Caller: That's great, thank you. And how long do refunds for online orders typically take to post?
4:39 Representative: For online orders, it may take up to seven days. Usually if it's escalated to our account review team or to our billing team, it will take up to 10 business days for the reversal of the money to the account.
5:01 Caller: Got it. And is this the right line for store questions, or should people call their local store?
5:10 Representative: If your concern is about your purchase in the store, physical store, you need to go to the customer service desk at the store. But if it's online orders, you need to call 1-800-WALMART.
5:27 Caller: Okay, and what should people have ready before calling about an online order?
5:34 Representative: So if they are calling about online orders, they should prepare the complete order number, also the specific name of the item. Also, when the associate or the agent will receive the call, they should prepare the first four letters of the email and also the last four digits of the phone number.
6:03 Caller: That makes sense, thanks. Those were my questions. I appreciate your help. Bye.
6:10 Representative: Thank you so much also. Bye for now.
6:14 Caller: Bye.

The transcript follows the recording. "Walmart AI" is Walmart's AI agent. No person came on the line, and nothing is muted.
0:02 Walmart AI: Hi, I'm the Walmart AI agent. I'm not perfect, and this call is being recorded to improve quality. Para ayuda en español, solo pregunte. Can I help with tracking an order, making a return, or something else today?
0:18 Caller: Something else, please.
0:23 Walmart AI: Okay, sure. What can I help you sort out today?
0:27 Caller: Yeah, hi, just a few general questions for a consumer guide. What hours is this customer care line staffed by live people, and in what time zone? And also, is this the right line for store questions, or should people call their local store?
0:45 Walmart AI: Let me look into that.
0:47 Caller: Sure.
0:50 Walmart AI: Yeah, for your guide, live customer care is staffed seven days a week, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Central Time, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas. This line can help with general Walmart support questions. For anything specific to one store, like that store's current hours, location, or local details, the most reliable route is the store locator in the Walmart app or on walmart.com. It stays current when a store's schedule changes.
1:19 Caller: Okay, great. And do you know how long refunds for online orders typically take to post?
1:30 Walmart AI: One moment. For an online order return, refunds to a credit or debit card, PayPal, Pay by Bank, or OnePay Later typically post within seven days. Refunds to a Walmart gift card, Walmart Cash, or Walmart balance are typically available within three hours.
1:48 Caller: Okay, thank you. And if someone calls about an online order, what should they have ready?
1:56 Walmart AI: Just a sec. I don't have a reliable guide for exactly what information callers should have ready for an online order question, and I'd rather not guess for your consumer guide. Is there another general Walmart question I can help with?
2:14 Caller: No, that's perfect. That's all I needed. Thanks so much. Bye.
