How to dispute a Wells Fargo charge by phone

We called Wells Fargo's credit card line on a Saturday evening with no card, asked how a cardholder disputes a charge, and reached a live representative 2 minutes 52 seconds in. Here's the phone tree, what he said, the one answer he got wrong, the separate debit card claim lines, and the full 9 minute recording.

The short answer: to dispute a charge on a Wells Fargo credit card, call 1-800-642-4720. Wells Fargo's credit card FAQ says: "To initiate a dispute please call 1-800-642-4720 or sign on to Wells Fargo Online and access Track Claims in Account Services." The same page calls 1-800-642-4720 "our 24-hour Customer Service number." For a dispute you've already filed, it lists 1-800-390-0533.

Debit card claims use other numbers. Wells Fargo's claims page lists 1-800-548-9554 (Monday to Friday, 7 am to midnight Eastern) for signature and Visa debit purchases and unauthorized transactions, and 1-877-230-8708, option 3 (Monday to Friday, 7 am to 7 pm Eastern) for ATM and non-fraud PIN purchases. More below.

This got us to a person on the credit card line, with no card:

  1. At "please provide your full account or card number", say "I don't have it." The menu itself says: "If you don't have this information, say, I don't have it."
  2. At "In a few words, please tell me the reason for your call", say you want to dispute a charge.
  3. At "please say the type of account", say "my credit card", then "personal account."
  4. "Give me a moment to connect you to someone that can help." A live representative answered 2 minutes 52 seconds into the call.

What the representative told us:

One answer was wrong. We asked if there's a time limit, and he said "No, ma'am." There is one. Under federal law your credit card billing error rights depend on a written notice that reaches the card company within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge (FTC; see our general guide). Call early and follow up in writing.

We called on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 6:24 pm Eastern, with call4me asking the questions. We don't have a Wells Fargo account, said so, and gave no card or personal details. This page is what we heard.

Listen to the call

The whole call, 9 minutes 19 seconds. Two short silences cover the representative's name. A 16 second stretch from 8:34 to 8:50 is also muted: a voice on the representative's side asked about "additional documentation regarding this claim," which didn't seem to be meant for us. Nothing else is muted or cut. The quiet minute from 3:54 to 4:51 is the representative checking before he answered.

The Wells Fargo credit card phone tree, step by step

This is the menu as it played on October 24, 2026, calling 1-800-642-4720 with no card.

  1. Call 1-800-642-4720. "Thank you for calling Wells Fargo. This call may be recorded, monitored, or analyzed by Wells Fargo and its service providers." Spanish: "oprima nueve."
  2. "To get started, please provide your full account or card number." Cardholders enter it on the keypad.
  3. Without one: "I couldn't find anything. If you need more time to find it, just say, hold on." Then "I still couldn't find anything."
  4. "To get you to the right place, I'll need to collect this information before I transfer you. If you don't have this information, say, I don't have it." We said "I don't have it."
  5. "In a few words, please tell me the reason for your call." We said "General question about disputing a charge."
  6. "To route you correctly, please say the type of account you need help with. You can say things like my checking account or my credit card." We said "My credit card."
  7. "Which is this? A personal account or a business account?" We said "Personal account."
  8. "Give me a moment to connect you to someone that can help." An ADA notice plays, with 1-800-642-4720 read out, then a second recording notice.
  9. A representative answers 2 minutes 52 seconds in.

Our earlier Wells Fargo call to the general banking line, 1-800-869-3557, went through a similar menu.

What to have ready

How we made this recording

call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For this one, the brief was to reach a live Wells Fargo representative with general questions for this guide, say we had no account, and give no card, account or personal details.

A few things to know about our side of the call:

We kept the audio as it happened, apart from the muted names and the background voice.

If you're the cardholder, call4me can work the menu, then ring your phone when Wells Fargo needs to verify you. You press 1 to join, and press * or hang up to hand the call back. See an AI that calls customer service for you. We've also recorded dispute calls to Chase, Capital One, Discover and PNC. For more phone trees, see the other companies we've called.

Have your agent make this call

If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:

Call Wells Fargo at 1-800-642-4720 to dispute a charge on my Wells Fargo credit card. Ring me when it asks for my card number so I can enter it myself, and ring me when the representative needs to verify me. Tell them: [merchant], [amount], charged on [date], and why: [what went wrong, and what the merchant said on (date)]. Ask if I'll get a provisional credit, how long it will take, and for a claim number. Don't give out my PIN or password, and don't agree to any other change on the account.

3:09 Representative: Yeah, we can actually answer a general inquiry regarding with the Wells Fargo credit card. I just wanted to check if you do have an account with us.

3:20 Caller: We don't have an account. This is just for informational purposes.

3:26 Representative: Sure, I can go ahead and help you out on that. May I know what your question is regarding with the card?

3:32 Caller: Yeah, basically, if someone sees a charge they need to dispute, what info do they need to have ready, and how long after the charge can they do that?

3:45 Representative: Well, if it's regarding with the disputes, we are actually... kindly give me a second. Let me just check this one out for you, okay?

3:54 Caller: Sure, no problem.

4:51 Representative: Thank you so much for patiently waiting, ma'am. Actually, regarding with how the dispute is being filed, we are actually the right department to speak with regarding the dispute, and the information you're asking actually can be disclosed to the cardholder themselves, because we're going to discuss on how the process will be done, what are the turnaround times, and such. If you're a merchant asking for how the processes will be done, then if it's related to, like for example, a transaction that has been done on your account, and there has been a dispute filed towards your merchant, then you will be in communication with our back-end representatives, and they will be in communication with you.

5:51 Caller: Okay, gotcha. At least for a cardholder, then, what would they say if they called this number, and what would they be asked for?

6:04 Representative: They actually needed to give us a call to this number, and then the information needed are, of course, we need to verify the account using basic information that they do have on file, and then after the verification, that's when the time that they can request to file a dispute for a charge that they don't agree on. And then the dispute would actually require some information regarding with how the process actually works.

6:47 Caller: And is there a time limit for calling in about it?

6:53 Representative: No, ma'am. As long as the cardholder notices that there is something wrong with the dispute or the transaction to be disputed.

7:11 Caller: Okay. And do they get sort of a temporary credit while it's being investigated?

7:20 Representative: Sorry, ma'am, what the question is?

7:22 Caller: Sure. If a cardholder disputes a charge, do they get a temporary or provisional credit while it's being investigated?

7:33 Representative: Yes, ma'am, they will.

7:35 Caller: Okay. And typically, how long does the whole thing take? Like, you know, what's the typical timeline?

7:45 Representative: 60 days, actually, is the timeline for that. And then, yeah, that's actually 60 days.

7:55 Caller: All right. And can they also file that dispute in the app or online? And, you know, would that be faster?

8:06 Representative: Yes, they can actually have it online if they want to, or they can just give us a call and have it disputed, or ask for assistance in filing a dispute.

8:18 Caller: Okay, great. And what are the hours for this line if someone needs to call about a dispute?

8:28 Representative: Let me just check that out.

8:31 Caller: Sure.

[8:34 to 8:50 muted: a voice on the representative's side.]

8:50 Representative: They're actually open from Mondays to Fridays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central Time.

8:58 Caller: All right. That's super helpful. Thanks for walking me through that.

9:03 Representative: Oh, so sorry for that. I would just like to correct. It's actually Mondays to Fridays from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central Time.

9:11 Caller: Oh, perfect. Thanks so much for clarifying. That's all I needed. Bye.
