Allstate phone number: the customer service number, and how to reach an agent
We called Allstate's customer service number to ask how a quote works in California and which number existing customers and claims should use. Here is the phone menu, what it asks before it lets you through, what the agent said, and the full 5 minute recording.
The short answer: the Allstate customer service number is 800-726-6033. Allstate's call center page lists it under "Get 24/7 support" and says its licensed agents "are available any time." The agent we reached confirmed it's the number for existing customers' billing and policy questions, and said claims can go through it as well: "there's not like a direct line to claims," you call it and ask for claims in the automated system. Allstate's own claims page does list a separate claims number, 800-255-7828 (1-800-ALLSTATE), for auto and property claims, and it's the one to call if you're not an Allstate customer.
To reach a person, this got us through in 2 minutes 9 seconds:
- Say "English" (or "español").
- At "will you need help with claims?", say "no" (say "yes" if it's a claim).
- Say why you're calling in a sentence.
- Answer the quote questions: the ZIP code where you want coverage, then whether you own your home.
After a privacy disclosure and about 7 seconds on hold, a licensed insurance agent picked up. They told us:
- Allstate is writing new auto policies in California. "Yes," with no hesitation.
- Phone, online or a local agent all work for a quote. "Neither one is easier than the other."
- For a quote, have your driver's license, your VIN, and the names of everyone who'll be on the policy.
- Claims can go through the same number: ask for claims in the automated system. Allstate's claims page lists 800-255-7828 for auto and property claims.
- Chat is open 24/7 in the Allstate app and on the website. The agent wasn't sure the phone lines are: "It depends on the department."
We called on Friday, October 2, 2026, at about 2:18 pm Pacific (5:18 pm Eastern), with call4me asking the questions. This page is what we heard.
Listen to the call #
The whole call, 4 minutes 59 seconds. Two short silences (under a second each) cover the agent's first name and my last name.
Key presses don't show up in the recording.
Jump to a moment:
- 0:00 "Thanks for calling Allstate, where you're in good hands", then a Spanish option
- 0:12 "Will you need help with claims? Say yes or no"
- 0:20 "In a few words, tell me why you're calling today"
- 0:39 "Let's get you to an agent. Just a few quick questions first to tailor your quote"
- 0:44 "What's the zip code where you want coverage?"
- 0:48 We say we don't have one and ask for a representative. It asks again
- 1:07 "Using your keypad, please enter the zip code now, or if you don't have it, press pound"
- 1:20 "Let's try this instead. Is this for Michigan?"
- 1:29 "Do you own your home?"
- 1:37 "We'll go ahead and continue", then a disclosure about collecting your credit, driving and claims history
- 1:58 "Please hold while we connect you"
- 2:08 A licensed insurance agent answers
- 2:32 Is Allstate writing new auto policies in California? "Yes"
- 2:40 Phone, online or a local agent: "all options are viable"
- 3:14 What to have ready: driver's license, VIN, names on the policy
- 3:25 Existing customers: "if it's the 1-800 Allstate number, then yes"
- 3:56 "The number is going to be 800-726-6033"
- 4:14 Claims: "the same number for claims"
- 4:26 Open 24/7? "It depends on the department", but chat is 24/7
The Allstate customer service phone tree, step by step #
- Call 800-726-6033. "Thanks for calling Allstate, where you're in good hands. Para español, diga español." Say "English" or just wait.
- "This call will be monitored and recorded. First off, will you need help with claims? Say yes or no." Say "yes" for a claim. We said "no".
- "In a few words, tell me why you're calling today." We asked how to get an auto quote in California and whether this number handles billing and policy questions.
- "Let's get you to an agent. Just a few quick questions first to tailor your quote." Even though half our question was about existing customers, the menu sent us down the quote path.
- "What's the zip code where you want coverage?" Say it, or type it. If you don't, it asks again, then offers the keypad, "or if you don't have it, press pound."
- "Is this for Michigan?" This came when we didn't give a ZIP. Our call4me number has a 248 area code, which is Michigan, so the menu seems to guess your state from the number you call from. We said "no" and it moved on.
- "Do you own your home?" Any answer works. Ours was "I'm not sure."
- A disclosure plays: by continuing, "you are authorizing us to collect information like credit, driving, prior insurance and claims history for you and others in your household," and Allstate may share it with affiliates and partners.
- "Please hold while we connect you." About 7 seconds later a licensed insurance agent answered, 2 minutes 9 seconds after dialing.
What to have ready #
- Your ZIP code. The menu asks for it first, twice, and then on the keypad. Having it skips the Michigan guess.
- Your driver's license and your car's VIN, if you want a quote. That's what the agent said to have ready.
- The names of everyone who'll be on the policy.
- Whether you own your home. The menu asks right before it connects you.
Things that don't work #
On October 2, 2026:
- Asking for a representative at the ZIP prompt. "I don't have a zip. Can I speak to a representative?" got "I still didn't get that." The menu wants an answer, not a request.
- Asking for an agent at the home question. "Can I please speak to an agent?" was ignored, but the menu continued anyway and connected us right after the disclosure.
Answering the questions, even with "no" or "I'm not sure", is what got through. Each answer moved the menu forward, and the transfer came right after the last one.
How we made this recording #
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For this one, the brief was to reach a person at Allstate, ask how a California auto quote works and which number existing customers and claims should use, and note every menu prompt on the way. It was told not to start a quote or give any personal details beyond the state.
It made two small mistakes on the menu. When the keypad prompt said to press pound if you don't have a ZIP, our caller said "Okay, sure" out loud. Key presses are silent in the recording, so we can't tell from the audio whether it also pressed pound; either way the menu answered "Sorry" and switched to guessing our state. And at "do you own your home?" it said "I'm not sure." That's true in the sense that it didn't know, but a person calling for themselves would just answer. Neither one slowed the call down.
Have your agent make this call #
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call Allstate at 800-726-6033. Say "English", then answer "no" to the claims question (or "yes" if this is about a claim). When it asks why I'm calling, say [your reason, for example "a question about my auto policy bill" or "a quote for car insurance"]. If it asks for a ZIP code, it's [your ZIP]. If it asks whether I own my home, the answer is [yes or no]. Once an agent answers, ask [your questions]. For a quote, my driver's license, VIN and the drivers on the policy are [details, or say I'll provide them later]. Don't agree to buy or change anything.

The transcript follows the recording. "Caller" is the call4me agent. The agent's first name and my last name are silenced in the audio and shown in brackets here. Key presses aren't audible.

2:08 Agent: Welcome to Allstate. My name is [name removed], a licensed insurance agent in your state. How can I help you today?
2:16 Caller: Hi, this is Nick [last name removed]'s assistant. I was hoping to ask a few general questions about getting an auto insurance quote in California.
2:27 Agent: Okay.
2:29 Caller: Great, thanks. First off, is Allstate writing new auto policies in California right now?
2:38 Agent: Yes.
2:40 Caller: Okay. And what's the easiest way for someone in California to get a quote? By phone, online, or through a local agent?
2:51 Agent: All options are viable. Neither one is easier than the other. I mean, they're all pretty easy. But I can get a quote going for you now.
3:02 Caller: Thanks, but I'm just looking for general info today. Could you tell me what info someone should have ready if they do want a quote, like driver's license or VIN?
3:14 Agent: Yes, driver's license, VIN, and the names of people who are going to be on the policy.
3:23 Caller: Got it, thanks. And just to check, is this also the right number for existing customers who have billing or policy questions?
3:34 Agent: Not 100% sure which number you called, but if it's the 1-800 Allstate number, then yes. If you don't have that, then I can give it to you.
3:45 Caller: Yes, please. That'd be helpful.
3:49 Agent: Give me one moment while I pull that up.
3:53 Caller: Sure, no problem.
3:56 Agent: Okay, so the number is going to be 800-726-6033.
4:07 Caller: Perfect. And what's the claims number, just for reference?
4:14 Agent: So that would be the same number for claims. There's not like a direct line to claims. However, you would just call that and just ask to speak with claims through the automated system.
4:26 Caller: That makes sense. And are your phone lines open 24/7?
4:34 Agent: It depends on the department. There are... not 100% sure, to be honest with you, but I do know that we have a chat option that is open 24/7 through the mobile app or website.
4:48 Caller: Good to know. I'll share that with Nick. Thanks so much for the help.
4:53 Agent: All right, no problem. You have a nice day, all right?
4:56 Caller: You too. Bye.
