GEICO customer service: the phone number and the words that reach a person
We called GEICO twice. An AI-assisted voice menu answers first. Asking for a representative got us looped and dropped. Saying \"get a new policy\", then \"auto\", got a licensed agent on the line 2 minutes 35 seconds in. Here are both recordings, the exact prompts, and what the agent told us.
The short answer: the GEICO customer service number is (800) 207-7847. GEICO's phone contact page lists it as "Sales & Service", and it's the only general GEICO phone number on that page. The page doesn't list hours. GEICO's information page says "We're here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The quickest way to contact us is through our app or online."
The first thing you hear is "Thank you for calling GEICO. During your call, you may interact with AI." It's a voice menu, not a person. This got us to a live agent:
- When it asks "how can I help you?", say "get a new policy".
- When it asks what type of coverage, say "auto".
- When it asks for your date of birth, say you don't have a policy yet and want a new quote.
- Answer "no" to "Are you calling from a business on behalf of a customer?" and "no" to "Do you have a current auto policy with GEICO?"
- Stay on the line when it says "If you would like to speak with a live agent, stay on the line."
- Say your state when it asks "which state you are calling for".
A licensed GEICO sales agent answered 2 minutes 35 seconds after the call connected. The hold itself was about 44 seconds.
What she told us:
- A quote by phone takes about 30 minutes. "I can definitely help you by phone. And the whole process would take around 30 minutes to fill out the application", plus reports.
- Claims: the app any time, the phone during business hours. "To file a claim, you can do it 24-7 through the app or during business hours with us on the phone." She didn't say what those business hours are, and we didn't ask.
- Cancellations go through the service department. "You can reach out to our service department and request cancellation on a specific date. And even requesting refunds if that's the case."
Our first try went differently. Asking for a "representative" twice and saying we didn't have an account got us a list of options, a coverage question, a date of birth prompt, and then the call ended at 2:17 without a person (that recording is below).
We called on Friday, October 9, 2026, at about 3:13 pm and 4:03 pm Eastern, with call4me. This page is what we heard.
Listen to the call
The call that reached a person, 4 minutes 9 seconds. We muted the agent's first name both times it was said, and my last name once. Nothing else is muted or cut. No keys were pressed: everything was said out loud.

The GEICO customer service phone tree, step by step
This is the path on the call that worked. It's all voice: no keypad presses.
- Call (800) 207-7847. "Thank you for calling GEICO. During your call, you may interact with AI." Then: "Si desea hablar español, por favor diga español."
- A recording notice. "This call may be recorded by GEICO or our providers for GEICO's quality assurance, training, and to improve our business."
- "Now, using a few words, how can I help you? You can say things such as file an auto claim, billing and payment, get a quote, or glass repairs." We said "Get a new policy".
- "If you're already a policyholder, tell me which policy you're calling about. Or, if you're not yet a GEICO customer, tell me what type of coverage you're interested in." We said "Auto".
- "To protect your privacy, please say or enter your date of birth, month, day and year." We didn't give one. We said we didn't have a policy and wanted a new quote, and the menu moved on.
- Two yes or no questions. "Are you calling from a business on behalf of a customer?" and "Do you have a current auto policy with GEICO?" We said no to both.
- An app pitch. "Did you know you can save time by using the GEICO app to check your quote or to request a new one? ... If you would like to speak with a live agent, stay on the line. Otherwise, feel free to hang up." Stay on.
- "One moment while I connect you with someone who can help." Then a privacy notice about personal information.
- "I seem to be missing some important details to properly route you. Please tell me which state you are calling for." We said California.
- A short hold. "Please wait while I gather your information", then "We apologize for the wait. We know your time is important. To make things easy, you can skip the line and go to geico.com or..."
- A person. "Thank you for calling GEICO. This is [name removed], your licensed professional. How may I help you today?"
This path goes to sales, since it's the new policy route. The agent still answered our claims and cancellation questions. For billing, claims or changes on a policy you already have, the menu offers its own options (below), and those will likely ask for your date of birth to find your policy. We didn't test them.
What to have ready
- The state you want coverage in. The menu asked for it right before the transfer.
- Your date of birth. The menu asks for it "to protect your privacy". As a new customer we got past it without giving one.
- About 30 minutes, if you want a full quote by phone. That's how long the agent said it takes.
- A reason you're shopping, if you have one. Her first question after ours was what's going on with your current insurance company.
- The GEICO app, for a claim outside business hours. The agent said claims can be filed there "24-7".
Things that don't work
Asking for a representative. On our first call, at 3:13 pm Eastern, our caller said "representative" twice and explained it had a general question and no account. The menu said "I want to transfer you to a representative, but don't know where to send you", and offered four options:
- "billing and payments, or press 1"
- "Questions on my existing policy, or press 2"
- "Claims, or press 3"
- "get a new policy, or press 4"
Our caller said "none of those are quite right". The menu then asked what type of coverage (our caller said "auto") and for a date of birth. Our caller said it didn't have an account and asked for a representative again. About 10 seconds of silence later, the call ended. No person came on.
The whole call, 2 minutes 18 seconds. Nothing is muted or cut. Our caller only said my first name.
Jump to a moment:
- 0:11 Our caller says "English" and starts introducing itself. The menu: "Sorry, I'm not able to understand"
- 0:43 "Representative, please"
- 0:48 "Sure, I can get you to someone who can help. To make sure you reach the right department, briefly tell me what you need assistance with"
- 1:03 "Representative. I just have a general question and I don't have an account"
- 1:10 "I want to transfer you to a representative, but don't know where to send you"
- 1:20 The four options, billing to new policy
- 1:34 "None of those are quite right"
- 1:42 "Sorry, can we try again? What type of coverage are you calling about?"
- 1:55 "Please say or enter your date of birth"
- 2:02 "I don't have an account. I just have a general question. Can I speak to a representative?"
- 2:07 Silence, and the call ends at 2:17
The difference between the two calls came at the date of birth prompt, which both calls reached after "auto". On the second call our caller said "I'm just looking for a new quote and hoping to speak with an agent", and the menu went on to its next questions. On the first, it said "I don't have an account" and asked for a representative, and the call ended. We only have one try of each, so we can't say for sure which words made the difference. If you're an existing customer, pick the option that matches your question instead of asking for a representative.
How we made this recording
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For both calls, the brief was to reach a live person at GEICO and ask three general questions: getting a quote by phone, filing a claim, and canceling.
On the first call our caller did what most people do: it asked for a representative and turned down the menu's options. It also said "none of those are quite right" when "get a new policy" was offered, and at the date of birth prompt it asked for a representative again. It never reached anyone.
For the second call we told it to pick "get a new policy" and say "auto". It did, and it told the menu it was looking for a new quote. When the agent asked what was going on with our current insurance company, our caller said it was just gathering general info and said goodbye. We kept the audio of both calls as it happened, apart from the muted names.
For more phone trees and recorded calls, see the other companies we've called. For other insurers, we've also called Allstate customer service and AAA insurance customer service.
Have your agent make this call
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call the GEICO phone number for sales and service, (800) 207-7847. A voice menu that may use AI answers. When it asks how it can help, say "get a new policy". When it asks what type of coverage, say "auto" [or homeowners, renters]. When it asks for a date of birth, say I don't have a policy yet and want a new quote, and ask for an agent. Answer "no" to calling from a business and "no" to having a current GEICO auto policy. Stay on the line for a live agent, and when it asks which state, say [your state]. When a person answers, ask: [your question, for example how long a quote by phone takes and what they need from me]. Don't start an application or give out my date of birth, license number or any account numbers.

3:08 Caller: Perfect. And how would someone file a claim? And is the claims line open 24-7?
3:18 GEICO agent: So to file a claim, you can do it 24-7 through the app or during business hours with us on the phone.

3:58 Caller: Oh, I'm just gathering general info right now. Nothing specific. That's all I needed. Thank you so much. Bye.
4:07 GEICO agent: Okay.
[The call ends here. Our caller hung up.]
