Progressive customer service: how to reach a person
We called Progressive's general customer service line with general questions and no policy. Saying we wanted a quote on a new policy got a live agent on the line 1 minute 30 seconds in. Here is the phone tree, what the agent said about callbacks, hours and getting a quote by phone, and the full recording.
The short answer: the Progressive customer service number is 1-888-671-4405. Progressive's contact page lists it as General Customer Service and says "We're always open! You can call us 24/7." A voice menu answers first. Say you want a quote on a new policy, say the state your car is parked in, and stay on the line. A live agent answered 1 minute 30 seconds after the call connected. We pressed no keys.
The same page lists the things that number handles: "Report an accident, File a claim, Make a change to my policy, Check my bill, Start a quote, Buy a policy, Need roadside assistance."
This got us to a person:
- When it says "You can speak to me in complete sentences" and asks how it can help, say you want an auto insurance quote.
- When it asks whether it's a new policy, an existing quote, or a change to an existing policy, say "new policy".
- When it asks "What state is your vehicle parked in?", say your state.
- Stay on the line through a disclosure about how quotes are priced.
What the agent told us:
- There's no callback option. "So there's no callback option."
- The fastest way to a person is this number and the prompts. Call "the same number you call and just following the prompts from the system when you first call in."
- Quotes and general customer service are open 24/7. "We're open 24-7 for new quotes and general customer service."
- You can get an auto quote by phone. Have your name, address, email, the vehicle's year, make and model, the VIN, the finance company if it's financed, everyone in the home over 15 or 16 (depending on the state), the coverage you want, and your driver's license number.
- For claims, call the same number and ask for claims. The agent wasn't in the claims department and couldn't say how long a claim takes, but said callers "will be able to call the same number" and get transferred to the claims team.
We called on Friday, October 16, 2026, at about 3:33 pm Eastern, with call4me asking the questions. This page is what we heard.
Listen to the call
The whole call, 3 minutes 48 seconds. Three short silences, under a second each, cover the agent's first name (said twice) and my last name. Nothing else is muted or cut.

The Progressive customer service phone tree, step by step
It's all voice. The menu said "Press 1" once, for more about its information practices, and we didn't.
- Call 1-888-671-4405. "Hello, thank you for calling Progressive. Your call may be recorded or monitored. You can speak to me in complete sentences. Si quiere hablar en español, solo diga español."
- "How can I help you?" Our caller said it wanted general info on reaching a person for a new auto insurance quote by phone.
- "I can help you with a quote. Are you calling to get a quote on a new policy, help with an existing quote, or to quote a change on an existing policy?" We said "New policy."
- "What state is your vehicle parked in?" We said California.
- "Please hold while I get you to someone to assist with a quote." Then a recorded disclosure: Progressive's companies sell directly by phone or online and through independent agents and brokers, "prices vary based on how you buy", and "By seeking a quote, you will be consenting to this collection and use of information even if it is protected by a security freeze." It offers "Press 1 to hear more about our information practices."
- "Please be aware immediate coverage may not be available."
- A person. "Thank you for calling Progressive. My name is [name removed]. How can I help today?" About 7 seconds after the last recording.
This path goes to the quote team, since it's the new policy route. The menu never asked for a policy number. If you already have a policy and need a claim, a bill or a change, the menu likely routes you differently. We didn't test that.
What to have ready
For a quote by phone, this is the agent's list:
- Your name, address and email address.
- The vehicle's year, make and model, and its VIN.
- The finance company, if the car is financed.
- Everyone who lives in your home over 15 or 16, depending on the state.
- The coverage you want.
- Your driver's license number.
The menu also asks what state your vehicle is parked in.
Things that don't work
- Asking the quote agent about claims. The agent wasn't in the claims department and couldn't say how long a typical claim takes. The advice was to call the same number and get transferred to claims.
- Waiting for a callback. The agent said there isn't one.

How we made this recording
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For this one, the brief was to reach a person at Progressive through the new quote path, ask five general questions, and not start a quote or give any personal details.
It got four of the five answered. The claims question went to someone in the quote department, who couldn't answer it. Our caller also said the agent's first name when it said goodbye; that's muted too. When the menu asked for a state, it said California, which was in its brief.
For other insurers, we've also called GEICO customer service, Allstate customer service and AAA insurance customer service. For more phone trees and recorded calls, see the other companies we've called.
Have your agent make this call
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call Progressive customer service at 1-888-671-4405. A voice menu answers that understands full sentences. Say I want an auto insurance quote, then say "new policy", and when it asks what state my vehicle is parked in, say [your state]. Stay on the line for a person. Ask: [your question, for example what they need from me for a quote by phone]. Don't start a quote or give out my driver's license number, VIN or date of birth unless I've said to.

The transcript follows the recording. "Progressive" is the voice menu and its recordings. "Agent" is the live person. "Caller" is the call4me agent. The agent's first name and my last name are silenced in the audio and shown in brackets here. No keys were pressed.
0:01 Progressive: Hello, thank you for calling Progressive. Your call may be recorded or monitored. You can speak to me in complete sentences. Si quiere hablar en español, solo diga español. How can I help you?
0:14 Caller: Hi, I'm just looking for some general info on reaching a human representative for new auto insurance quotes by phone. What's the fastest way to get to an agent?
0:27 Progressive: I can help you with a quote. Are you calling to get a quote on a new policy, help with an existing quote, or to quote a change on an existing policy?
0:36 Caller: New policy.
0:41 Progressive: What state is your vehicle parked in?
0:44 Caller: California.
0:48 Progressive: Please hold while I get you to someone to assist with a quote.
0:52 Caller: Sure, no problem.
0:52 Progressive: Our companies are pleased to offer you different ways to buy their products, directly by phone or online, or through independent agents and brokers. Prices vary based on how you buy. The insurance company providing your quote will use information from you and other sources, such as your driving and claims histories, to price your insurance. By seeking a quote, you will be consenting to this collection and use of information even if it is protected by a security freeze. Press 1 to hear more about our information practices.
1:23 Progressive: Please be aware immediate coverage may not be available.
1:30 Agent: Thank you for calling Progressive. My name is [name removed]. How can I help today?
1:35 Caller: Hey, this is Nick [last name removed]'s assistant. We're doing a general consumer guide and just had a few questions about reaching a person at Progressive by phone.
1:48 Agent: And who are you looking to speak with?
1:52 Caller: Just any representative who could answer a few general questions, please.
1:58 Agent: And what's the question?
2:01 Caller: Yeah, so what's the fastest way to reach a live person by phone at Progressive? And is there a callback option if someone's waiting on hold?
2:12 Agent: So there's no callback option. And the fastest way to reach a real person with Progressive is by calling the same number you call and just following the prompts from the system when you first call in.
2:28 Caller: Okay, good to know. And do you know what your phone hours are for new quotes and for general customer service?
2:37 Agent: So we're open 24-7 for new quotes and general customer service.
2:42 Caller: Oh, perfect. And can someone get an auto insurance quote by phone? And what info would they need to have ready?
2:50 Agent: Yes, someone can get an auto quote by phone. You must have your name, address, email address, the year, make, and model of the vehicle, the VIN number, the finance company if it's finance, anyone who lives in the home over the age of 15 or 16, depending on the state, and then the type of coverages you would like. And also your driver's license number is also needed for a new quote.
3:16 Caller: Great, thank you. And last one, about how long does a typical auto claim take to process? And how would someone file one?
3:25 Agent: So I'm not sure about the claims because I'm not in the claims department. But they will be able to call the same number and we'll just get them transferred over to the claims team and then they'll be able to advise them on how long the process is and all the general information.
3:41 Caller: Got it. Thanks so much, [name removed]. That really helps. Have a good one.
3:47 Agent: You too.
