How to cancel an Audible membership, from a real call to Audible customer service

The short answer: you can cancel an Audible membership online, in your membership settings at audible.com, or by phone at 888-283-5051 (1-888-283-5051, the number in the title of Audible's contact page). By phone, Audible verifies you by sending an approval link to the phone number or email on your account: you click approve, then ask them to cancel. The associate told us the line is open 24/7.

Before you cancel, know these, all from the associate on our call:

We called on Friday, October 2, 2026, at about 2:18 pm Pacific, with call4me asking the questions. A person picked up 2 minutes after dialing. This page is what we heard.

Listen to the call

The whole call, 7 minutes 1 second. Two short silences (under half a second each) cover the associate's first name and my last name.

Key presses don't show up in the recording. Our caller's log records each one, and the times are noted below and in the transcript.

The Audible customer service phone tree, step by step

  1. Call 888-283-5051. "Hi, you've reached Audible. We look forward to assisting you. Stay on the line while we find someone who can help." Then a recording notice.
  2. "To connect to an Audible customer service associate, please press 2 7 0." This is a keypad check, not a menu. Listen for the digits and type them. Our caller pressed 270.
  3. The main menu. 1 if you're visually impaired (an accessibility specialist), 2 "to pause or cancel your Audible membership", 3 for your listening experience, 4 for technical difficulties, 5 for all other questions. Our caller pressed 2.
  4. A second keypad check: "please press 5 5 0." The digits were different from the first one. Our caller didn't answer this in time (see below), heard a warning, and pressed 550 on the repeat.
  5. "Your call is in queue." An associate picked up about 5 seconds later, 2 minutes after we dialed.
  6. Ask your question. The associate said anything that touches your account needs verification first, but general questions don't.

What to have ready

Things that don't work

On October 2, 2026:

We didn't try saying "representative" or pressing 5 for all other questions, and we didn't cancel anything: we had no account to cancel. So we can't tell you whether Audible offers you a deal at the moment you cancel. The associate's answer to "are there any offers" was that discounted and cheaper plans exist and you can ask about them anytime.

How we made this recording

call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For this one, the brief was to reach a person at Audible, ask how cancelling works, and note every menu prompt on the way.

It handled the keypad checks badly. At both checks it made a noise out loud ("Mm-hmm" at 0:29, "Hmm" at 1:03) instead of just typing. It pressed 270 about 6 seconds after the prompt ended, which worked, but it missed the first "press 5 5 0" entirely, and only pressed 550 after Audible warned it was about to hang up. Our caller's log shows the keys it sent: 270 at 0:30, 2 at 1:04 and 550 at 1:46. We kept the audio as it happened, since the warning is useful to know about.

Have your agent make this call

If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:

Call Audible at 888-283-5051. At "To connect to an Audible customer service associate, please press" type the digits it reads out right away (they change: we got 270, then 550). At the main menu press 2 to pause or cancel. Tell the associate I want to cancel my Audible membership. My account is under [your email or phone number]; they'll send me a verification link to approve. Before cancelling, ask when it takes effect, how many credits I have left, and what cheaper plans or pause options they can offer me. Don't accept any offer without asking me.

The transcript follows the recording. "Caller" is the call4me agent. The associate's first name and my last name are silenced in the audio and shown in brackets here. Key presses aren't audible; the ones our caller's log records are noted in brackets.

1:54 Audible: Your call is in queue and will be answered by

2:00 Associate: Hi, thank you for contacting Audible. You are speaking with [name removed]. With who do I have the pleasure to speak to at the moment?

2:05 Caller: Hi, this is Nick [last name removed]'s assistant. I just had a few general questions about canceling an Audible membership.

2:17 Associate: Understood. Have it in mind that if any of these questions involve maybe any other information on the account, I will need to verify the account first, so I can gladly give you any details aside from this.

2:28 Caller: Right, I don't have any account details handy. We're just asking for general information before canceling.

2:37 Associate: Understood. Yeah, let me know and I'll be more than glad to help you out.

2:40 Caller: Okay, first, can someone cancel their Audible membership over the phone, and what do they need to verify the account?

2:49 Associate: Correct. So we just need to verify the account via the phone number or email. We will send a link to verify the account from Audible. They just need to click approve and verify the account that way. During the call, they just need to request the action of cancellation, and we'll be more than glad to assist them. As well, directly on the web page, they can gladly go into their memberships and proceed with the cancellation in that way.

3:13 Caller: Okay, that's good to know. And what happens to unused credits and to audiobooks already bought when the membership is canceled? And when does that cancellation take effect?

3:25 Associate: Okay, so to confirm, the cancellation takes effect in the last date of the current payment cycle. Just to be sure, there's not going to be any additional charges, and in that last date, the account will be closed. Now, when it comes to credits, when it comes to books already purchased: the credits that the account has on the Premium Plus membership, those credits will be expired if they are unused once the cancellation date arrives. So they won't be able to be used again. Now, when it comes to the books, in the Premium Plus membership, any books purchased with credits, those will stay in the account even after cancellation.

4:07 Caller: Okay, that's helpful.

4:09 Associate: However, in the Standard plan, to be sure, any books that are selected with the Standard plan, since they are not a purchase, they are a monthly selection, those books will be locked, in that the customer won't be able to use those books or to hear them until they get a new membership active.

4:30 Caller: Okay, gotcha. Is there an option to pause the membership instead, and for how long?

4:38 Associate: Yes. So the pause on the membership goes for 90 days. There is a cooldown every time a pause is used, for 90 days, for 12 months. And that if the pause was used during this year, let's say in October, the next pause that can be used needs to be on October of 2027.

4:58 Caller: Okay. And are there any offers for people who want to cancel, like discounted months or free credits?

5:07 Associate: Of course. It doesn't have to be in regards of cancellation, it can be normally, if the person just calls to check if there's any discounts. Cancellation doesn't affect the process of offering any discounts or different plans. Of course, we do have plans that are discounted, and we also have regular plans, which are monthly payments, that would be cheaper in case that they're looking for plans that are not that pricey. Or in case that they need more time, we do have plans that are bimonthly, meaning that if he needs a month to finish a book, in that month he won't be charged, and he will be charged in the next [unclear] cycle.

5:50 Caller: Okay, okay. Next, does canceling work differently if they signed up through Amazon, or the iPhone app, or Google Play?

6:00 Associate: Correct. So in this case, any cancellations that are done with the account being on Amazon, they will be handled directly with us, without any inconveniences. Now, if the membership was taken with Apple, for example, or with Google subscriptions, any type of cancellation needs to be done directly with either Apple or Google subscriptions, since they handle the subscriptions differently than what it is with us.

6:33 Caller: Okay, that makes sense. One last question. What are your phone support hours?

6:40 Associate: We're 24/7. You can gladly call us at any time, any day. We'll be more than glad to assist you in anything that is requested.

6:48 Caller: Perfect, that's all I needed. Thanks so much. Bye!

6:51 Associate: More than a pleasure. [Unclear], do you have any other questions or anything else I can gladly assist you with at the moment?

6:57 Caller: No, that's it. Thanks. Bye.
