Experian phone number: what actually happens when you call to freeze your credit
We called Experian's freeze line 15 times in one afternoon. Here is the whole phone tree, every dead end, and a 9 minute recording of the call that got furthest.
The short answer: Experian's credit freeze line is 1-888-397-3742 (1-888-EXPERIAN). It is fully automated. It asks for your complete Social Security number before it will do anything, and we found no option that reaches a live person without it. After you pass its identity check (SSN, ZIP code, street number, date of birth), it still steers you to freeze online at experian.com/freeze or by mail. In our tests it never placed the freeze over the phone.
We tested this on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, between about 3:45 and 5:45 pm Central, with call4me placing the calls and me joining to type my own Social Security number. This page is what we heard.
Listen to the call #
This is the call that got furthest: two full passes through Experian's identity check, and everything it said afterwards. It is 9 minutes 33 seconds, the whole call, with three short silences (about 3 seconds in total) over Experian reading back my date of birth and my last name, said twice.
The silent stretches are real. Keypad entries don't show up in the recording, so every quiet gap after "please enter" is someone typing (or the system waiting for them to).
Jump to a moment:
- 0:00 greeting, then a consent notice: calls may be recorded, and Experian may use AI and "biometric technology"
- 0:38 "You've reached our self-service line"
- 1:07 asks for your complete Social Security number
- 1:45 ZIP code
- 1:56 the numeric part of your street address
- 2:16 date of birth, typed as MMDDYYYY
- 3:00 "what can we help you with?" menu
- 3:25 first pass fails: "We weren't able to verify your identity", and a 3 option menu
- 3:56 second pass: Social Security number again
- 6:28 date of birth read back, "Is that correct?"
- 6:46 offers to text you instructions
- 7:10 "Have you already attempted to complete a freeze online or through the mail?"
- 7:34 "The simplest and most effective way to do a freeze is online or by mail"
- 8:09 reads out the online and mail instructions
- 9:26 "I'm afraid I can't proceed without valid information" and hangs up
The phone tree, step by step #
- Call 1-888-397-3742. A recording thanks you for calling and plays a consent notice about recording, AI transcription, and biometric technology. Staying on the line counts as consent.
- "You've reached our self-service line." It says you can add or remove a security freeze or order a credit report here.
- "Please say or enter your complete Social Security number." All 9 digits, on the keypad. This comes before any menu.
- "Now please say or enter your ZIP code." This has to match the address on your credit file. Mine is a mail forwarding address, not where I live, and that is the one that worked.
- "We also need the numeric portion of your street address." For 1878 Main Street you enter 1878. Same address as the ZIP.
- "Please enter your date of birth" as a two digit month, two digit day and four digit year: July 20, 2009 is 07202009.
- It reads your date of birth back and asks "Is that correct?" Say yes.
- It offers to text you instructions if you're on a mobile phone.
- "Have you already attempted to complete a freeze online or through the mail?" Then it recommends online or mail as "the simplest and most effective way", and offers the text again.
- If you ask it to repeat, it says you can freeze "online, by phone, or by mail", then reads out only the online and mail steps.
- After a couple of unanswered yes or no questions it ends the call: "I'm afraid I can't proceed without valid information."
If any identity step fails (we missed the date of birth on the first pass), you get: "We weren't able to verify your identity." Then say verify or press 1 to start over, say self-help or press 2, or say instructions or press 3 for instructions on freezing by mail or online.
What to have ready before you call #
- Your full Social Security number
- The ZIP code and street number of the address Experian has on file, which may be an old or mailing address
- Your date of birth as MMDDYYYY
- A phone with a keypad. The prompts time out in a few seconds, so have the numbers in front of you.
Things that don't work #
We tried every route people suggest online. On September 30, 2026, none of them reached a person.
- Saying "representative" at the Social Security prompt. It answers "I don't recognize that entry" and asks for the number again.
- Pressing 0 at the Social Security prompt. It skips ahead to a spoken menu (freeze or unfreeze, fraud alert, report or score). Asking for anything there sends you to experian.com/help.
- Saying "other questions" or "representative" at that menu. You get "visit experian dot com slash help", then "I'm currently unable to provide support on this matter", and the call ends.
- Calling Experian's headquarters line, 714-830-7000. It's a corporate switchboard "intended to assist Experian business partners". Press 1 and you land in the same automated system. Press 2 and a real operator answers, but only to transfer you into that same system, which asks for your Social Security number again.
How to actually freeze your Experian credit #
This is what Experian's own phone system told us to do:
- Online: go to experian.com/freeze and use the Credit Freeze Management Center. The phone system calls this "the fastest and easiest" way.
- By mail: send a written request to Experian Security Freeze, P.O. Box 9554, Allen, TX 75013 with your full name, Social Security number, addresses for the past two years, date of birth, a government issued ID, and a utility bill or bank statement.
A freeze is free, and you'll need to lift it before applying for new credit.
How we made this recording #
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For this test, it dialed Experian, and when Experian asked for my Social Security number it rang my phone so I could join and type it myself. The agent never saw or heard the number. It took the call back once I was through, and wrote down every prompt.
Some of our 15 calls that afternoon ended early because of bugs on our side, which we fixed the same day. The phone tree above held the same on every call that got that far.
Have your agent make this call #
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call Experian at 1-888-397-3742 to place a security freeze on my credit file. Ring me to join when it asks for my Social Security number so I can type it myself. My ZIP and street number are the ones on my credit file: [ZIP], [street number]. My date of birth is [MM/DD/YYYY]. If it only offers online or mail, write down exactly what it says and hang up.
