USAA phone number: how to reach a person, and who can join
We called USAA's main number to ask who can join and what it takes. Here is the phone tree, the one word that got us through it, what the eligibility team said, and the full 8 minute recording.
The short answer: the USAA phone number, the main line for USAA customer service, is 800-531-8722 (800-531-USAA). You can also dial 210-531-8722, or #8722 from a mobile phone. USAA's support page says "You can reach any department through our main number." It's open Monday to Friday 6 am to 10 pm Central and Saturday 8 am to 8 pm Central, and closed Sunday ("Days and times may vary").
If you're not a member and want to join, this got us to a person:
- At the prompt for your Social Security or member number, press 1 ("If you're not a member").
- Press 2 ("interested in joining USAA").
- When it asks for a product, say "membership".
After a short disclosure and a hold announced as "approximately two minutes", someone from the eligibility department picked up. On our call that was 3 minutes 28 seconds after dialing. They told us:
- Most members qualify through military service, "hopefully with an honorable or under honorable discharge."
- A child of a USAA member can join, and so can a spouse. Siblings and other relatives can't.
- Some areas of federal government may be eligible. That's assessed person by person.
- No documents up front. "We do have a system that does check for eligibility." A DD-214 or other military documents, or an ID card, may be asked for later.
- Membership is free. You only pay for products you choose to buy, like insurance. USAA's membership page says the same: "creating a member account with USAA is free."
- You can join at usaa.com or by phone. It's the same process either way, and by phone it takes "five minutes, maybe a little more" if nothing comes up.
We called on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at about 12:52 pm Eastern, with call4me asking the questions. This page is what we heard.
Listen to the call #
The whole call, 7 minutes 50 seconds. Two short silences (under half a second each) cover the representative's first name and my last name.
Key presses don't show up in the recording, so the quiet gaps after "press 1" and "press 2" are our caller pressing them.
Jump to a moment:
- 0:00 "Welcome to USAA", then a Spanish option and a recording notice
- 0:15 "Otherwise, please enter your Social Security or USAA member number. If you're not a member, press 1"
- 0:27 "Alright, you're not a member." Press 2 for joining USAA
- 0:50 "Tell me just one of the products you're calling about", including "membership questions"
- 1:03 We say "membership questions". It asks again: "What product are you mainly calling about?"
- 1:19 We say "membership". It answers "Sorry"
- 1:30 "Sorry, for what product?"
- 1:49 "Membership" again, and this time it goes through
- 1:57 A membership data disclosure, "less than a minute"
- 2:57 "The current hold time is approximately two minutes", then a survey offer
- 3:28 The eligibility department answers
- 3:53 "Where were you calling from?"
- 4:19 You can apply at usaa.com or by phone
- 4:32 Who's eligible: "typically someone who has served in the military"
- 4:58 Family members: a member's child, and a spouse
- 5:23 "Some areas of federal government may be eligible"
- 6:04 Siblings and other relatives: "that's not going to be eligible"
- 6:17 Documents: none up front, maybe a DD-214 or ID later
- 7:00 "Membership doesn't cost anything"
- 7:20 Joining by phone: "five minutes, maybe a little more"
The USAA customer service phone tree, step by step #
- Call 800-531-8722. "Welcome to USAA. Para español, marque estrella dos." Then: "We monitor and record calls in line with our privacy notice."
- "To reach an extension, press the pound key. Otherwise, please enter your Social Security or USAA member number. If you're not a member, press 1." Members enter their number here. To join, press 1.
- "Alright, you're not a member." Then: "If you're a business or need help with a claim, press 1. If you're interested in joining USAA or would like more information about our products and services, press 2." Press 2.
- "Tell me just one of the products you're calling about." It lists auto insurance, homeowners insurance, credit card, checking and auto loan, "or say membership questions or more options."
- Say "membership". Saying the offered "membership questions" didn't work for us (see below). Plain "membership" got "Sorry" the first time and went through the second time.
- A disclosure plays. It says USAA collects your name, contact information, date of birth, occupation and military service details to check eligibility and to market its products.
- A hold. It announced "approximately two minutes" and offered a survey after the call. A person answered about 30 seconds after that announcement.
- The eligibility department picks up. Our representative asked where we were calling from and whether we were calling for ourselves or for general information.
What to have ready #
- The state you're calling from. It was the representative's first question.
- Your military service details, if that's how you qualify. The disclosure lists "military service details", and the representative said applicants "give us their military information."
- Your parent's or spouse's USAA membership, if you're joining through family.
- Your DD-214 or other military documents, and an ID, in case they're asked for after your account is set up. Nothing was needed up front.
Things that don't work #
On October 1, 2026, at the "which product" prompt:
- Saying "membership questions". The menu offers it, but saying it just got "What product are you mainly calling about?" again.
- Saying "representative". Our call log shows our caller said it right after the first "Sorry". The word didn't make it onto the recording (the line is silent there for about 2 seconds), but the menu's answer did: "Sorry, for what product?"
Saying "membership" a second time is what worked. We didn't try "more options".
How we made this recording #
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. For this one, the brief was to reach a person at USAA, find out who qualifies to join and what it takes, and note every menu prompt on the way.
It got one thing wrong. When the representative asked "Where were you calling from?", our caller said "Texas". That wasn't in its brief and it isn't true: I live in California. It made the answer up instead of saying it didn't know. We've since fixed it. We kept the audio as it happened, since the question itself is useful to know about.
Have your agent make this call #
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call USAA at 800-531-8722. At the member number prompt press 1 (not a member), then press 2 (joining USAA). When it asks for a product, say "membership", and say it again if it doesn't take. Ask the eligibility department whether I qualify: [your military service and discharge, or which parent or spouse is a USAA member]. I'm calling from [your state]. Ask what documents they'll need and how long joining by phone takes. Don't start an application or give out my Social Security number.

2:57 USAA: At the present time, all representatives are assisting other callers. The current hold time is approximately two minutes. We'd like feedback about your experience with USAA today by asking a few questions after this call. Would you like to participate?
3:13 USAA: Thank you. If selected, the survey will begin at the end of your call.
3:28 Representative: Hi, thanks for calling USAA. My name is [name removed] with the eligibility department. How can I help you today?
3:34 Caller: Hi, this is Nick [last name removed]'s assistant, and we're just trying to figure out who qualifies to join USAA and what someone needs to join. Like documents, and whether it's free, and the quickest way to join.
3:50 Representative: Okay, I'll go over some general guidelines. And where were you calling from?
3:55 Caller: We're calling from Texas.
3:59 Representative: Okay. I mean, are you calling for yourself or just general information?
4:05 Caller: Just general information.
4:08 Representative: Okay. All right. So I'll just go over that with you. Just a minute.
4:13 Caller: Thanks.
4:19 Representative: So, I mean, first, the process of application can be done at USAA.com or by doing it over the phone. Some general guidelines regarding who may be eligible is, you know, typically someone who has served in the military. And hopefully with an honorable or under honorable discharge. And then they give us their military information and they sign up as a member.
4:58 Representative: And then in terms of family members, it's done through, if their parents is a USAA member, the child can join. If someone joins, they can also, in addition to their child, they can have their spouse become eligible for membership. There are a couple of other scenarios that may be applicable. Some areas of federal government may be eligible, et cetera. So I cannot really give all of that detail. It has to be assessed based on each person. But most of our members are members because they have served in the military.
5:46 Caller: Okay, that totally makes sense. So if someone's parent was a USAA member, the child can join as well?
5:55 Representative: That's correct. So it can be, the child becomes eligible, as well as the spouse. If we go beyond that, siblings, other family members, that's not going to be eligible.
6:10 Caller: Okay, got it. What kind of documents would they need to provide to prove that?
6:17 Representative: Well, initially, we don't require documents. We do have a system that does check for eligibility. But sometimes, when the account is established, they do have to provide additional documents and they will be notified what it is. Sometimes it's DD-214, some sort of military documents. If it's about their identity, we may require an ID card. Not necessarily military ID card, but other types of ID card. But sometimes they may just get approved right away.
6:55 Caller: Okay. And is there any fee to become a member, or is it free?
7:00 Representative: Yeah, so membership doesn't cost anything. If they're eligible, then they can decide whether or not to purchase insurance, and only then they pay for their insurance, car, et cetera.
7:14 Caller: Perfect. And if someone joins by phone, how long does it usually take to get that set up?
7:20 Representative: Well, if there is nothing, if there's no problem comes up, we could do it in a few minutes. Five minutes, maybe a little more. Same thing is done, same process is at USAA.com. If they want to apply online, we take the same information over the phone.
7:40 Caller: Okay. That's super clear. That's all I needed. Thank you.
7:44 Representative: Not a problem. Have yourself a great day. Bye.
7:47 Caller: You too. Thanks so much. Bye.
7:49 Representative: Take care. Bye.
