How much is an eye exam without insurance? Two real quotes, recorded
Our AI phone assistant called two eye care offices in Katy, Texas and asked what a routine exam costs with no vision insurance. One quoted $143 and had nothing left that day. The other quoted 99 and booked a 4 PM exam the same afternoon. Here are all three recordings and what to have ready.
The short answer: how much an eye exam costs without insurance depends on the office, so call and ask for the self-pay price for a routine exam for a new patient. On Monday, September 28, 2026 we called two offices in the Katy, Texas area for someone with no vision insurance:
| Office | Self-pay routine exam, new patient | Earliest opening |
|---|---|---|
| MyEyeDr. Cinco Ranch | "It's $143." | Nothing left that day. Next day from 9 AM |
| Revolution Eyes, Katy | "Out of pocket price is 99 for the routine" | 4 PM the same day, booked on the call |
That's a $44 difference between two offices in the same area, on the same afternoon, for the same exam. Two calls are two data points, not a price list. Prices vary by office and by city, and these were stated on that day's calls. Ask what yours costs before you book.
The calls were made from our own call4me account by its AI phone assistant, for a person who needed an exam and gave us permission to publish them. Their name, date of birth and phone numbers are muted in the audio, and so are the staff names.
How much is an eye exam without insurance: two quotes #
MyEyeDr. Cinco Ranch: $143. The phone menu offers online booking first ("go to myeyedr.com or press pound if you want us to text you a link"). Option 2, appointments, went to a person at the Cinco Ranch office. The price came straight back: "It's $143." The office had nothing left that day. The earliest opening was 9 AM the next day, with appointments "up until around 4 o'clock." The front desk suggested booking on the website, where you pick a day and then see which doctor has which time slots.
Revolution Eyes in Katy: 99. Our caller asked to book the first available routine exam for a new patient. The office offered 4 PM the same day, went through its intake questions, and then volunteered the price at the end: "out of pocket price is 99 for the routine." That was for a routine exam only. The office asked whether it was "any contact lenses or just routine only for glasses" before it named the price, so if you wear contacts, ask for that price separately.
Listen to the price check (1 minute 52 seconds) #
- 0:00 The phone menu. Booking online comes first, then "For appointments, press 2" at 0:26
- 0:47 "Your call may be recorded"
- 0:55 "This is MyEyeDr. in Cinco Ranch"
- 0:59 The ask: "the self-pay price for a new patient's routine eye exam without insurance"
- 1:07 "It's $143."
- 1:15 "As far as today, I don't have anything left," but openings from 9 AM the next day
- 1:29 Book on the website: pick a day, and it shows which doctor has which slots
Listen to the same day booking (2 minutes 20 seconds) #
- 0:06 The front desk answers
- 0:11 The ask: a routine eye exam for a new patient
- 0:34 "There are some today, and for the rest of the week"
- 0:42 "We'll take the first available with any doctor"
- 0:48 "We have a 4 p.m. today. Does that work?"
- 0:57 Then the questions: name, date of birth (1:10), vision insurance (1:19), a cell number (1:30), and contacts or glasses only (1:43)
- 1:51 "Out of pocket price is 99 for the routine. And then he's all set for today at 4 p.m."
How to book a same day eye exam, step by step #
- Call more than one office. The first office had nothing left that afternoon. The second, called about 20 minutes later, had a 4 PM opening.
- Say the three things that set the price up front: new patient, routine exam, no vision insurance (self-pay).
- Be flexible about the doctor. "We'll take the first available with any doctor" is what got the same day slot. Offices with several doctors book each one separately.
- Have the intake answers ready. Revolution Eyes asked, in order: preferred day and time, mornings or afternoons, full name (our caller spelled the first name), date of birth, vision insurance, a cell number, and contacts or glasses only.
- Get the price before you hang up. At MyEyeDr. it was the answer to the first question. At Revolution Eyes the office named it at the end, after the booking.
- Give a phone number you'll actually answer. The number given on the booking call turned out to be the wrong one, and it took a second call to fix it (below).
What to say: a script that worked #
For a price:
Hi there, I'm just checking what the self-pay price is for a new patient's routine eye exam without insurance. And what's your earliest opening?
To book:
Hi, I'm hoping to book a routine eye exam for [name]. [They're] a new patient, self-pay, no vision insurance. We're pretty flexible, so we'll take the first available with any doctor. What would the out of pocket price be?
Ask what the quote covers #
Neither of our calls asked what the price includes. Ask before you go:
- Is the glasses prescription included, and is a contact lens exam or fitting extra?
- Are there add-ons you'll be offered at the visit, like dilation or retinal photos, and what do they cost?
- Is the self-pay price the total, and is it paid at the visit?
The follow-up call: fixing the phone number (1 minute 27 seconds) #
The number given on the booking call was the wrong one, so our caller called back at about 3:49 PM, eleven minutes before the exam, to correct it.
- 0:02 The front desk answers. Our caller's "Hi, hello?" at 0:10 gets a second greeting
- 0:21 Our caller says it's getting the patient on the line, waits a few seconds, then goes ahead itself
- 0:30 "The phone number on file was wrong. Could you update it?"
- 0:43 "Yes, let me do that." The number goes back and forth, then "that's updated" at 1:08
- 1:10 "Is his 4 o'clock appointment still set for today?" "Yes, correct."
Let an AI phone assistant make the call #
These calls were made by call4me, an AI phone assistant that works inside the agent you already use (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT). You tell your agent what to get done. It calls and talks to the office like a person would, asks you mid-call if something comes up, and reports back with the outcome and the transcript.
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call [eye care office] at [phone number] and ask the self-pay price for a routine eye exam for a new patient with no vision insurance, and whether the glasses prescription is included. If it's under $[budget], book the earliest opening today or tomorrow with any doctor for [name], date of birth [date], cell [the number I'll answer]. Tell them it's a routine exam for glasses only, no contacts. Read the phone number back before hanging up.
