How to transfer a prescription from Amazon Pharmacy to Walgreens (3 recorded calls)

My AI phone assistant moved one of my prescriptions from Amazon Pharmacy to a Walgreens in San Francisco. Here are all three calls, what each pharmacy asked for, and the step Amazon's phone menu said it couldn't do.

How to transfer a prescription from Amazon Pharmacy to Walgreens, three recorded calls

The short answer: to transfer a prescription, call the new pharmacy first and ask whether they have it in stock. If they do, they register you as a patient (name, date of birth, phone, address, insurance or self-pay) and request the transfer from your old pharmacy, which needs the old pharmacy's name and phone number. You can also call the old pharmacy yourself. Amazon Pharmacy's phone menu said the new pharmacy has to ask, but its customer care representative transferred the prescription out to Walgreens in under five minutes on the third call below, once we gave the store's name, ZIP code, address and phone number.

These are my own calls, made on Monday, September 28, 2026 by call4me, my AI phone assistant. Amazon Pharmacy had my prescription out of stock, and a Walgreens near me had it on the shelf. (Earlier that morning, another call got my other prescriptions out of Amazon's pharmacist review; that's in Amazon Pharmacy phone number: what happens when you call.) It took three calls in about half an hour:

  1. 11:50 am PT, Walgreens: is it in stock? Yes. They started registering me, and the call dropped partway through. (3 minutes 37 seconds)
  2. 11:54 am PT, Walgreens again: finished the registration, asked them to request the transfer, got a self-pay price. (8 minutes 26 seconds)
  3. 12:18 pm PT, Amazon Pharmacy: asked Amazon to send the prescription to that Walgreens and cancel the pending Amazon fill. Both done. (5 minutes 14 seconds, plus an automated survey after the goodbye)

My name, date of birth, phone number, address, the verification code, the medication and its strength, the store's street address and phone number, and the staff names are muted in the audio and shown in brackets in the transcripts. The calls end at the transfer: they don't show the pickup.

How to transfer a prescription, step by step

  1. Call the new pharmacy and ask for the pharmacy. Walgreens' phone menu asks "How can I help you today?" Saying "I need to transfer a prescription to your pharmacy" got the caller straight through, with the store's hours read out on the way.
  2. Ask if it's in stock before anything else. It took the staff under half a minute to check. If the new pharmacy doesn't have it, a transfer just moves the problem.
  3. Register as a new patient. Walgreens searched by phone number first ("I can't find you in our system"), then asked for insurance, the patient's name spelled out, date of birth, phone number, sex and home address. Self-pay was fine.
  4. Give them the old pharmacy's name and phone number. "We're gonna have to get a hold of them, 'cause we're not connected with them." Walgreens said its pharmacist would call Amazon.
  5. Ask the price and when it will be ready. Walgreens quoted "about $109.89 out of pocket" for self-pay. On timing: "I will check back in later on this afternoon, maybe around 4 to 5 o'clock."
  6. Or call the old pharmacy and have them send it. Amazon Pharmacy verified the account with a code, its phone menu said it doesn't take transfer-out requests on that line, and then it put us through to a person who did the transfer.
  7. Cancel the pending fill at the old pharmacy so you aren't filled or charged twice. Amazon's representative canceled it on the same call.

What you need ready

Listen to the stock check (3 minutes 37 seconds)

Listen to the registration (8 minutes 26 seconds)

Listen to Amazon Pharmacy transferring it out (5 minutes 14 seconds)

How long does it take to transfer a prescription?

On the phone, not long. Amazon's representative transferred the prescription out 4 minutes 33 seconds into the call, about 75 seconds after picking up. The whole chain, from the first Walgreens call to Amazon canceling its fill, took about 33 minutes, and most of that was a dropped call, a hold and the time between calls.

Before the new pharmacy can fill it, the paperwork has to arrive. Walgreens put it plainly: "It does take a bit of time for us to call Amazon and get it transferred over here," and pointed to "later on this afternoon, maybe around 4 to 5 o'clock." These recordings end there, so they don't show when the prescription was ready.

What to say: scripts that worked

To the new pharmacy:

Hi, I need to transfer a prescription to your pharmacy. Could you check if you have [medication and strength] in stock? ... Could you transfer the prescription in from [old pharmacy]? Their number is [number].

If they need to register you, give your name, date of birth, phone, address and insurance (or "self-pay"), then ask: "Do you happen to know the self-pay price?" and "When do you think it'd be ready?"

To the old pharmacy:

I was hoping you can note on [patient]'s account that [patient] authorizes transferring the [medication] prescription to the Walgreens at [street address], [city]. ... Their phone is [number].

The second line got the transfer done, not just noted. Then: "Can you cancel the pending fill for it so it doesn't get double-filled?"

Let an AI phone assistant make the calls

These calls were made by call4me, an AI phone assistant that works inside the agent you already use (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT). You tell your agent what to get done. It calls and talks to the pharmacy like a person would, asks you mid-call if something comes up, and reports back with the outcome and the transcript.

If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:

Transfer my [medication and strength] prescription from [old pharmacy] to [new pharmacy, street address, phone]. First call [new pharmacy] and check it's in stock. If it is, register me as a new patient (my name, date of birth, phone, address, and [insurance or self-pay]), ask them to request the transfer from [old pharmacy] at [old pharmacy's phone number], and get the price and the ready time. Read every phone number one digit at a time and have them read it back. Then call [old pharmacy], ask them to transfer it out to [new pharmacy], and cancel any pending fill there. Ask me before agreeing to a price over $[budget].

0:03 Phone system: Thank you for calling Amazon Pharmacy and PillPack. If this is an emergency, please hang up and dial 911. All calls are recorded for quality and security. Are you an Amazon Pharmacy customer?

0:18 AI agent: Yes.

0:22 Phone system: Is the mobile number you are calling from associated with your account?

0:29 AI agent: Uh, no. The number on the account is [phone number removed].

0:41 Phone system: One moment. I've sent a six-digit verification code to your email and mobile phone. You can speak it or enter it using your keypad. Go ahead whenever you're ready.

0:58 AI agent: Okay, just waiting on that [name removed]...

The caller waits for the code.

1:13 AI agent: [verification code removed].

1:19 Phone system: Let me verify that for you.

1:22 AI agent: Sure.

1:24 Phone system: Your code is correct. How can I help you today?

1:27 AI agent: Great. I wanna see about transferring [name and medication removed] prescription to Walgreens on [street address removed], San Francisco. They have it in stock.

1:44 Phone system: Just to clarify, it sounds like you'd like to transfer the [medication removed] prescription away from Amazon Pharmacy to a Walgreens. We don't process transfer out requests from this line. Your new pharmacy can contact us to request the transfer, or you can ask your prescriber to send a new prescription to Walgreens directly. Would you like Amazon Pharmacy's contact information to share with Walgreens?

2:10 AI agent: Hmm. Could you note on his account that he authorizes the transfer to that Walgreens, so if they call, it'll just go through right away?

2:25 Phone system: I'm sorry, I'm not able to add notes to the account from this line. I'd recommend having Walgreens call us directly at... Actually, I'll need to transfer you to a customer care representative who can add that note for you. Would you like me to do that?

2:41 AI agent: Yes, please.

2:46 Phone system: I'll connect you with someone who can help with your issue. Please hold for just a moment.

2:52 AI agent: Sure.

2:59 Phone system: The current wait time to speak with an Amazon Pharmacy customer care representative is approximately one minute. At the end of the call, you will have an opportunity to share your feedback in a brief customer satisfaction survey.

3:18 Representative: Hi, this is [name removed, and "with Amazon"] Pharmacy Clinical Customer Care on a recorded line. How can I help you?

3:22 AI agent: Hi, I was hoping you can help note on [name removed]'s account that he authorizes transferring his [medication and strength removed] prescription to the Walgreens at [street address removed], San Francisco.

A pause.

3:44 Representative: What was the medication?

3:47 AI agent: It's [medication and strength removed].

3:57 Representative: Okay, and the zip code was?

4:01 AI agent: [ZIP code removed].

4:07 Representative: And it was at Walgreens?

4:09 AI agent: Yes, that's right.

4:15 Representative: Let me see. What's the full address?

4:18 AI agent: It's [street address removed], San Francisco, [ZIP code removed]. And their phone is [phone number removed].

4:33 Representative: Okay, I did transfer that out. Was there anything else I can help you with?

4:39 AI agent: Um, yeah, actually, can you cancel the pending Amazon fill for it so it doesn't get double-filled?

4:47 Representative: Yes.

A pause.

5:02 Representative: Okay, it's been canceled. Was there anything else I can help you with?

5:07 AI agent: No, that's everything. Thank you so much. Bye.

5:11 Representative: Bye.

After the goodbye at 5:12, the remaining 12 minutes 42 seconds of the original recording contain an automated feedback survey, its repeated prompts, and our caller answering it. They are omitted.
