How much does a private dining room cost? We called 5 restaurants for a dinner for 10
A call4me user had their AI phone assistant call five Durham restaurants about a private dining room for 10. Here's what each one charged, what they asked for, all five recordings, and the questions to ask before you book.
The short answer: a private dining room for 10 usually costs a room fee, plus a set amount of food per person, plus a deposit or a card on file, and the numbers swing a lot from one restaurant to the next. On five calls to Durham, North Carolina restaurants for the same Thursday dinner, the room fee ran from none mentioned (10 people were treated as a regular reservation) to $350 to $1,500. Two places already had their private space booked that night, and one would only talk about it by email.
What a restaurant will ask, and what you should ask back:
- The date, the time and the headcount. Every call started there.
- How private it needs to be. "Private or semi-private, or a table that feels set apart" got different answers at every place: a separate downstairs area, an outdoor pergola, a set-apart table, a private room.
- The room fee, and whether it counts toward food and drink. M Hansik said its $350 is a room fee on top of the food. At The Lenny, our recording is unclear on that exact point (more below).
- The food minimum or per-person spend, and whether there's a set menu.
- The deposit, or a card on file. All three places that quoted asked for one or the other.
- Who books it. At four of the five, a private room or a party goes through an events contact or an email address, not the person who answers the phone.
These calls were made on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, between about 5:08 and 5:20 pm Eastern, by a call4me user's AI phone assistant planning a company dinner for Thursday, November 5. It rang all five restaurants in under 12 minutes, some of them at the same time. Nothing was booked or held: the brief said to collect quotes and not give a card. The user is okay with us sharing the calls. Their name, the staff names and the email addresses are muted in the audio. Prices and availability are what each restaurant said on that date.
The five quotes, side by side #
For a party of 10 on Thursday, November 5, 2026, around 6 pm, as quoted on September 30, 2026:
| Restaurant | Private space that night | Room fee | Food and drink | Deposit or card | How to book the room |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M Hansik | Private dining room, available | $350 (quoted for Wednesdays and Thursdays) | $65 per person expected for food, set menu | 50% of the total up front | An events contact, by email |
| The Lenny | Private events room, just for your group | $1,500 flat to rent the room | Packages: buffet or sit-down dinner | A deposit ("a small fraction of the price") and a card on file, once the event is confirmed | The events coordinator, by email |
| Mateo Bar de Tapas | Upstairs area already reserved. 10 can sit downstairs | None mentioned for 10: "it's just regular" | No minimum mentioned. Family style starts at 12 people | A card on file | Regular table by phone. Private room through the events coordinator |
| Nikos | Private space already booked. A set-apart table in the main room, "probably" | Not discussed | Not discussed | Not discussed | 5:00 or 7:30 offered, not 6:00 |
| Seraphine | Not discussed on the phone | Not discussed | Not discussed | Not discussed | Email the restaurant |
Some quick math from the quotes, ours and not the restaurants': at M Hansik, 10 people at $65 plus the $350 room comes to $1,000 before drinks, tax and tip. As the host described the deposit, it's the $350 plus half of the food, which would be $675 up front. At The Lenny, the room alone is $1,500, before any food package.
What moves the price of a private dining room #
- Group size. Mateo treats 10 as a regular reservation with a card on file. Its family-style setup and the event planner start at 12 people. If you're near a cutoff like that, ask: it can be the difference between a room fee and none.
- The day. M Hansik's host quoted the $350 room fee "for Wednesday and Thursdays." Ask whether another night costs something different.
- Fee or minimum. A room fee is money for the room. A food and beverage minimum is spend that goes to your meal. They aren't the same, and a host may use "deposit" for either. M Hansik's host first called the $350 "a deposit of $350 for the room," then confirmed it was a room fee.
- How private. A separate room costs the most. A set-apart table or a quieter area can cost nothing extra. The Lenny's host was upfront that "nothing really in the dining room feels super away from people," and offered the pergola outside, with a warning that it would be "a little bit chillier" in November.
- Packages and set menus. M Hansik uses a set menu. The Lenny sells food and drink packages, buffet or sit-down, and pre-orders everything, which is why it wants a card on file.
Listen: M Hansik, a $350 room and $65 a head (2 minutes 55 seconds) #
- 0:00 The phone menu: "Press 3 to speak to a team member"
- 0:31 A host picks up
- 0:45 "Yes, we do have a private dining room"
- 1:08 "It looks like it is available"
- 1:11 "For Wednesday and Thursdays, we do require a deposit of $350 for the room"
- 1:21 "We expect $65 per person for food"
- 1:28 "For that upfront deposit, we ask for 50% of the entire payment"
- 1:41 Room fee, or money toward food and drink? At 1:48: "Correct, that is a room fee"
- 1:56 "Yes, we would do a set menu"
- 2:14 "Do you want to book that now, or I could have someone reach out to you about booking it?"
- 2:48 The events contact's name, spelled out. The recording ends at 2:55, before the email address was finished.
Listen: The Lenny, a $1,500 private events room (2 minutes 53 seconds) #
- 0:18 "Are you guys wanting to pay for a private space? Are you okay with there being other reservations there?"
- 0:35 The pergola, outside, and "nothing really in the dining room feels super away from people"
- 1:00 "It would be a little bit chillier out then, so keep that in mind"
- 1:10 The private events room: "you pay a flat fee to book the room, and then you have the room just for you and your group"
- 1:29 "The fee just to rent the room is $1,500"
- 1:35 Food and drink packages: "We do like buffet style, we can do sit-down dinner"
- 2:08 Is there a deposit or card required?
- 2:16 "She will take a deposit... It's like a small fraction of the price"
- 2:30 "All the food and everything and the alcohol is pre-ordered before your event, so we need a card on file"
Right after "$1,500," the host says whether the fee counts toward food and drink, and we can't tell you which way it went. We ran that phrase through three transcription models several times. One heard "that doesn't go towards food or beverage." The other two heard "that does include towards food or beverage." Our caller didn't ask again. That's a $1,500 difference in what dinner costs, so get it in writing from the events coordinator.
Listen: Mateo Bar de Tapas, no room fee for 10 (2 minutes 36 seconds) #
- 0:06 The ask: a private or semi-private space, "or even just a table for 10 that feels a little set apart, for a company dinner"
- 0:29 "We do have an event upstairs where that's reserved"
- 0:53 "Downstairs would be our area that we would have that we could accommodate 10"
- 0:59 "What would the food and beverage minimum or, like, room fee be?"
- 1:05 "So for 10, it's just regular." Family-style service and the event planner start "at 12 people"
- 1:17 "With 10, we would just need a card on file to make the reservation"
- 1:34 "I can do that right now on the phone"
- 1:40 A private room "would be through our events coordinator"
- 2:08 The coordinator's name and email (muted)
Listen: Nikos, 6:00 was full (2 minutes 24 seconds) #
- 0:03 The ask: a table for 10 on Thursday, November 5th, around 6
- 0:13 "You said November 10th?" Corrected to the 5th
- 0:57 "I can't do 6, but I can do 5 o'clock or 7:30"
- 1:12 A private space? "We do, but it is booked at the moment"
- 1:31 A set-apart table in the main dining room? "Yeah, we can probably do that"
- 1:50 "What's a good phone number?" Our caller goes quiet, and the call ends with nothing held
Listen: Seraphine, ask by email (1 minute 11 seconds) #
- 0:26 A host speaks, after about 25 seconds on the line
- 0:49 "We can send an email out to... are you ready?"
- 0:55 An email address (muted), "to book that party and inquire about it"
How to book a private dining room, step by step #
- Call early, and call several places. Five weeks ahead, two of these five already had their private space booked for that night: Mateo's upstairs and Nikos's room.
- Lead with the date, time, headcount and the occasion. "A table for 10, on Thursday, November 5th, around 6, for a company dinner."
- Ask for a range of privacy, not just a room. "A private or semi-private space, or even just a table that feels set apart" is what got Mateo's downstairs area and Nikos's set-apart table.
- Ask the money questions together: the room fee, the food and beverage minimum or per-person spend, and the deposit. Then ask: does the room fee count toward food and drink? That's the question we needed and didn't get a clear answer to.
- Ask about the menu. Set menu, packages, or order from the regular menu?
- Be flexible on time. Nikos couldn't do 6:00 but could do 5:00 or 7:30.
- Get the events contact's email, and have it read back. At M Hansik, The Lenny, Mateo and Seraphine, a private room or a party goes through email or an events person. Our M Hansik call ended before the address was finished, so we only got a first name.
- Know your answer when they ask for a card or a phone number. Mateo and M Hansik both offered to book on the spot, and Nikos asked for a phone number. If you're only comparing, say so: "We're comparing a few places. I'll call back to book."
Where our caller fell short #
- At Nikos, the host asked "What's a good phone number?" to hold 7:30, and our caller said nothing. It had been told not to book or hold, which was right, but it should have said that out loud.
- At The Lenny, it didn't ask again whether the $1,500 counts toward food. See above.
- At M Hansik, the call ended while the host was spelling out the events contact's email.
What to say: a script that worked #
Hi, I was hoping to ask if you have a private or semi-private space, or even just a table for [number] that feels a little set apart, for a [company dinner] on [day, date] around [time].
Then: "What would the food and beverage minimum or room fee be? Is that a room fee, or does it go toward food and drink? Would we need to do a set menu for that group size? Is there a deposit or card required to hold it? Who's the best private events contact, and what's their email?"
Let an AI phone assistant make the calls #
These calls were made by call4me, an AI phone assistant that works inside the agent you already use (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT). You tell your agent what to get done. It calls and talks to the restaurant like a person would, asks you mid-call if something comes up, and reports back with the outcome and the transcript. It can call several restaurants at once, which is how five calls fit in under 12 minutes.
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call [restaurants and phone numbers] and ask whether they have a private or semi-private space, or a table for [number] that feels set apart, on [day, date] around [time]. At each one, find out the room fee, whether the room fee counts toward food and drink, the food and beverage minimum or per-person spend, whether a set menu is required, and the deposit. Get the private events contact's name and email, and have the email read back. Don't book, hold, or give a card. If they ask for a phone number or a card, say we're comparing a few places and will call back. Put the answers in one table.

0:31 Host: M Hansik. This is [name removed].
0:33 AI agent: Hi! This is Sarah, [name removed]'s assistant. I was wondering if you have a private or semi-private space for a party of 10 on Thursday, November 5th around 6?
0:45 Host: Um, yes, we do have a private dining room. Um, let me take a look for November 5th.
0:52 AI agent: Sure, thanks.
0:59 Host: You said November 6th or November 5th?
1:03 AI agent: The 5th, the Thursday.
1:05 Host: Thursday the 5th, okay. Yeah, it looks like it is available. So just to let you know, so for Wednesday and Thursdays, we do require a deposit of $350 for the room. And then we do also ask for, we expect $65 per person for food. So for that upfront deposit, we ask for 50% of the entire payment. So that would be the initial $350, and then half of, you said it would be 10 people on the 5th?
1:39 AI agent: That's right. And sorry, is that $350 a room fee or something that goes toward food and beverage?
1:48 Host: Correct, that is a room fee.
1:50 AI agent: Got it. And would we need to do a set menu for that group size?
1:56 Host: Yes, we would do a set menu, and we would reach out to you regarding that to work on that with you.
2:02 AI agent: That makes sense. Who's the best private events contact for [name removed] to follow up with?
2:10 Host: Yeah, let me just confirm, one moment. Do you want to book that now, or I could have someone reach out to you about booking it?
2:20 AI agent: Right, [name removed] will take care of the booking. Could I get the email for whoever handles the private events?
2:27 Host: Yeah, just one moment.
2:44 Host: Okay, are you ready for that email?
2:46 AI agent: Yep, go ahead.
2:48 Host: Okay, it's [name removed, spelled out].
2:53 AI agent: Mm-hmm.
The recording ends at 2:55, before the rest of the email address.

0:00 Host: Hello, thank you for calling [unclear]. How may I help you?
0:03 AI agent: Hi! This is Sarah, [name removed]'s assistant. I'm wondering if you have a private or semi-private space for about 10 people on Thursday, November 5th, around 6 pm?
0:16 Host: Let me take a look. Are you guys wanting to pay for a private space? Are you okay with there being other reservations there?
0:27 AI agent: Open is okay, but if there's an area that feels a bit set apart, that would be ideal. Yeah.
0:34 Host: Okay. So we have a space we call our pergola, which is outside. Nothing really in the dining room feels super away from people, just because the dining room is full of tables, so it doesn't give a super intimate space. But we do have outside sections that can feel a little bit more set apart, because they are off to the side. This reservation you're asking about, you said November 5th, right?
0:58 AI agent: Yeah, November 5th.
1:00 Host: So it would be a little bit chillier out then, so keep that in mind. So if you are looking for outdoor seats, it might be cold out then, or we could do our private events room, which you pay a flat fee to book the room, and then you have the room just for you and your group.
1:22 AI agent: Okay, that actually sounds like a good setup. What's the fee or the food and beverage minimum for that?
1:29 Host: So that one, the fee just to rent the room is $1,500, and that [unclear: we heard "doesn't go" or "does include"] towards food or beverage. And then there's different packages for food and beverage based off what you're going to do. We do like buffet style, we can do sit-down dinner. And all those details, I can provide you with the email to our events coordinator, [name removed], and she'd be more than happy to help you kind of plan all that out.
1:50 AI agent: Okay, that would be great. What's [name removed]'s email?
1:53 Host: Perfect. It's going to be [email address removed].
2:07 AI agent: Perfect. And just so I can give my boss the full picture, is there a deposit or card required to hold that space?
2:16 Host: Yes. So once you start planning it with her, she will take a deposit. I'm not sure how much it would be, but they do take deposits once the event is confirmed. It's like a small fraction of the price, but it's just so that we know you guys are going to show up. And obviously all the food and everything and the alcohol is pre-ordered before your event. So we need a card on file in case, you know, no one shows up for the event, we need, you know, collateral to charge.
2:43 AI agent: Sure, that makes sense. Okay, great. That's what I needed. Thanks so much.
2:48 Host: Of course. Have a good one.
2:51 AI agent: Bye. Hang up.

0:03 Host: Thank you for calling Mateo Tapas. This is [name removed].
0:06 AI agent: Hi, this is Sarah, [name removed]'s assistant. I was hoping to ask if you have a private or semi-private space, or even just a table for 10 that feels a little set apart, for a company dinner on Thursday, November 5th around 6 pm?
0:22 Host: Let's see. So November 5th.
0:29 Host: So right now we do have an event upstairs where that's reserved. Typically, that would kind of be our most, like, private-ish area that we could reserve, like, without... So right now, what would be available, let me see. Oh, [unclear].
0:53 Host: So downstairs would be our area that we would have that we could accommodate 10.
0:59 AI agent: Okay, that sounds good. What would the food and beverage minimum or, like, room fee be?
1:05 Host: So for 10, it's just regular. Yeah, once you get past, like, once it starts at 12 people, that's when you'll have to do, like, more of a family setup, or family style of service, and then talk to our event planner. With 10, we would just need a card on file to make the reservation, and we'd be able to lock that in for you.
1:23 AI agent: Okay, that's good to know. Is there a private events contact I could follow up with about maybe getting that set up, or talking through that?
1:34 Host: Yeah, so just for the, if you're wanting to book for the November 5th for the 10 people, I can do that right now on the phone. If you were looking to just reserve or book a private space in general, and like reserve a space for like a private room and rent out a room, that would be through our events coordinator.
1:51 AI agent: Oh, I see. Yeah, I think for right now I'd just like to get the contact information for that events coordinator, so my boss can review that and maybe reach out. What's their name or email?
2:06 Host: Yeah, of course. So her name is [name removed]. And then her email, it's super simple. It is just [email address removed].
2:26 AI agent: Okay, great. That's helpful. Thank you so much.
2:30 Host: Of course. Yeah, we look forward to taking care of you.
2:32 AI agent: Perfect. We'll be in touch. Bye.
2:34 Host: Awesome. Talk to you soon.

0:03 AI agent: Hi, this is Sarah, [name removed]'s assistant. I was hoping to get a table for 10 on Thursday, November 5th around 6?
0:13 Host: All right. You said November 10th?
0:16 AI agent: No, November 5th.
0:18 Host: Oh, I'm sorry.
0:20 AI agent: No problem.
0:30 Host: All right. And how many people would you like to make it for?
AI agent: 10.
0:36 Host: For 10?
0:44 Host: All right. And what time were you looking for?
0:47 AI agent: 6 pm.
0:57 Host: I can't do 6, but I can do 5 o'clock or 7:30.
1:03 AI agent: Okay, so between those two, 7:30 would probably work better for us. Do you have a private or semi-private space for that size group?
1:12 Host: We do, but it is booked at the moment. So we aren't able to put you in there.
1:19 AI agent: Gotcha. Okay. If it were just in the main dining room area, would we be able to get a table that feels kind of set apart?
1:31 Host: Um, yeah, we can probably do that.
1:41 Host: All right. So you said 7:30 would work for you guys?
1:50 Host: What's a good phone number?
1:56 Host: Hello?
Our caller doesn't answer, and the call ends at 2:24 with nothing booked or held.
