Couch reupholstery cost: compare sofa and chair quotes with an AI agent
Published shop prices use different assumptions about fabric and labor. Give your AI assistant a clear brief to collect estimates for your furniture.
Couch reupholstery cost needs a definition of what is included. Modern Memory Design in New Jersey publishes $1,000 to $2,500 including labor and standard fabric. Threadful Things in Austin lists labor from $1,658 for a sofa with three seats, with fabric separate. Those figures describe different scopes, so they are not directly comparable. We checked these official price pages on October 7, 2026. They are individual shops' published guides, not national averages or phone quotes obtained by call4me. Use them to structure your budget, then ask for an estimate for your actual piece.
An AI agent can take on the calls needed to move from a price guide to your own estimate. call4me lets it ask shops about your sofa, photo requirements and collection area, then return the answers for your decision. See how an AI calling agent handles a task for you for the overall workflow. For upholstery, the result should identify which shops can quote the work and what each still needs from you.
Published couch reupholstery prices #
All figures below are in US dollars. The source links lead to each shop's price list.
| Shop and item | Published price | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Modern Memory Design, couch | $1,000 to $2,500 | Labor and standard fabric |
| Modern Memory Design, sectional | $2,000 to $4,500 | Labor and standard fabric |
| Threadful Things, loveseat | From $1,160 | Labor only |
| Threadful Things, sofa with three seats | From $1,658 | Labor only |
| Threadful Things, sectional | From $2,555 | Labor only |
Modern Memory Design excludes sales tax and adds fabric upgrades, repairs and delivery to its base estimates. Its calculator is not a binding quote. Threadful Things describes starting labor charges, with the final quote dependent on fabric, dimensions, style and project details. Check those inclusions before comparing either with another shop's total.
Have your AI agent compare local upholstery quotes #
Connect call4me through the Claude Code guide or Codex guide. Give the assistant your furniture description, location and permission to make inquiry calls:
Compare upholstery shops near [city or ZIP code] for my [couch, sectional or chair]. The piece measures [width, depth and height], has [number] cushions, and needs [known work]. My fabric preference is [description], and I [can deliver it / need pickup]. Check official shop websites, then use call4me to call up to [number] shops for missing details. Confirm they handle this furniture type and ask where I should send photos and measurements for an estimate. Ask for labor, fabric type and yardage, foam, spring or frame repairs, trim, tax, pickup, delivery, deposit terms and expected completion time as separate items. Return a comparison with the source, date, estimate status and unanswered questions. Do not book work, pay a deposit or send my photos without approval.
A phone call can establish whether a shop is suitable and how to request its estimate. It does not guarantee a price without photos or inspection. Keep “awaiting photos” separate from “written estimate received” in the assistant's results.
Chair reupholstery cost: dining seats versus armchairs #
A removable dining seat and a fully upholstered armchair need separate comparisons. Threadful Things lists labor from $95 for a removable dining seat, $670 for a club chair and $995 for a wingback chair. Fabric is additional. Modern Memory Design lists $100 to $250 for a dining chair seat and back and $300 to $1,100 for an armchair or club chair, including standard fabric and labor. Identify the chair construction before asking for a price. Tell the shop whether the work covers only a seat pad, the seat and back, or the whole upholstered body. Include whether the seat comes out and whether you can deliver just that part. For a set, give the exact quantity and flag any chairs with different damage.
Ask for a price per chair and a total for the set. Have the assistant check whether fabric, padding replacement and installation are included in both figures. If the shop needs to inspect the chairs, record that condition rather than converting a starting price into a final total.
For exposed wooden arms, legs or frames, request a separate woodwork estimate. Our furniture refinishing cost guide covers that related task.
How much upholstery fabric will you need? #
Extra Touch Upholstery's yardage guide estimates 12 to 16 yards of plain fabric for a standard seven foot sofa, compared with 16 to 22 yards for patterned fabric requiring matching. For a single dining seat, its estimates are 0.75 to 1.25 yards plain or 1.25 to 1.75 yards patterned. These are that shop's planning ranges.
Ask the upholsterer to confirm yardage for the specific furniture and fabric before buying material. Include the fabric width, pattern and product name when available. If you want to supply your own fabric, have the assistant check whether the shop accepts it and how that changes the estimate.
What should the written estimate include? #
Give every shop the same scope so the comparison answers a useful question: what will it cost to complete the work you actually want?
- Covering: Specify the fabric and whether the price includes every cushion, back, arm and skirt you want recovered.
- Interior work: Ask whether foam, padding, springs or frame repairs are included, optional, or dependent on inspection.
- Transport: Request the charge for both pickup and return, including any access requirements at your building.
- Timing and payment: Check the estimated completion date, deposit amount, balance due date and cancellation terms.
Send clear front, back, side and damage photos through the shop's requested channel. Ask what could change after inspection and how you would approve extra work. A photo estimate is useful for narrowing the shortlist; confirm its conditions before arranging collection.
Use the same process to find an upholstery subcontractor #
If you manage furniture projects for clients, add repeat work to the brief. Ask whether the shop accepts outside projects, its service area, how it wants job details submitted, and whether its schedule can support your expected volume. Keep price estimates attached to the specific furniture and scope.
Have your agent return qualified shops and the next action for each: send photos, arrange inspection, clarify an exclusion, or review a written quote. You can then approve the supplier and work with the evidence in one place.
