DIRECTV customer service: how we reached a live person
We called DIRECTV customer service twice. The first time its AI agent answered and we never got past it. The second time we said "cancel service", said we had no account number, chose satellite, and a live representative picked up. The route, what each said, and both recordings.
The short answer: the DIRECTV customer service phone number is 800-531-5000. DIRECTV's contact page says "Call us at 800.531.5000," under "Prefer to talk?", with "Business hours: Mon-Sun, 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM CT". It's the only phone number on that page, and there's also a Chat Now option. DIRECTV's cancel help page gives the same number for cancelling: "Call 800.531.5000."
How we reached a live person. An AI agent called "Eva, DIRECTV's AI agent" answers first. On our second call, this got us to a person in about 2 minutes 47 seconds:
- When it asks how it can help, say "cancel service".
- When it asks for the phone number or the account number on your service, say you don't have it, and ask for a live agent.
- When it asks "Are you calling about your DIRECTV satellite or streaming service?", say "satellite".
It then said "Please hold while we connect you to an agent", and a live representative answered about 15 seconds later. She told us she was a real person.
What the person told us:
- You have to call to cancel. "If they want to cancel their services, they have to call in and cancel it by phone."
- The early termination fee depends on the account. "It all depends on the information on the account for the early termination fee." She gave no amount.
- Whether equipment goes back depends on the equipment. "When they disconnect their services, they will run their equipment to see if they have to return it or not."
- There are offers, depending on the account. "It all depends on the account. We do have different, multiple different promotional offers."
What the AI agent told us on the first call was more specific, including an early termination fee "of up to $20 for each month left in their commitment." The person didn't give any figure, and DIRECTV's cancel help page doesn't either, so treat the $20 as unconfirmed. More on that call below.
We made both calls on Thursday, October 8, 2026, with call4me asking the questions: the first at about 3:20 pm Central, the second at about 4:05 pm Central. This page is what we heard.

The transcript follows the recording. "Caller" is the call4me agent. "DIRECTV AI" is DIRECTV's AI agent, which called itself Eva. "DIRECTV rep" is the live representative, who said she was a real person. Her name is muted in the recording and shown as [name removed].
0:05 DIRECTV: Thank you for calling DIRECTV. Para español, oprima el ocho. This call is being recorded for quality assurance.
0:15 Caller: Hi, hello?
0:15 DIRECTV AI: Hi there. I'm Eva, DIRECTV's AI agent. How can I help you today?
0:21 Caller: Hi. I'm calling to cancel service.
0:28 DIRECTV AI: Got it.
0:31 DIRECTV AI: To get started, please say or enter the phone number associated with your DIRECTV service.
0:37 Caller: Yeah, so I'm thinking about canceling, but I'd like to talk to a live agent first, please.
0:48 DIRECTV AI: Okay.
0:53 DIRECTV AI: Okay. Before I connect you with a live agent, I'll need to verify your account. Please say or enter the phone number associated with your DIRECTV service.
1:02 Caller: I don't have that, but is there any way I could just talk to an agent?
1:13 DIRECTV AI: Okay, let me see about that.
1:16 DIRECTV AI: One moment. Just need to gather a few more account details, then I'll get you connected to an agent.
About 10 seconds of quiet on the line.
1:31 DIRECTV AI: Please say or enter the phone number associated with your service, or if you don't know it, press star.
About 8 seconds of quiet. Our caller didn't say anything, and we have no record of it pressing star.
1:45 DIRECTV AI: Okay.
1:47 DIRECTV AI: Please say or enter the four to nine digit account number associated with your service. If you need to find it, I can wait for you to locate it. If you need me to wait while you find it, just press star.
2:03 Caller: I don't have that. Can I please speak to a live agent? I don't have an account number. I'm not a customer with an account, but I do have a general question and need to speak to a live agent.
2:18 DIRECTV AI: Are you calling about your DIRECTV satellite or streaming service?
2:24 Caller: Uh, satellite.
About 8 seconds of quiet.
2:32 DIRECTV: Please hold while we connect you to an agent. Your estimated wait time is about five seconds.
About 8 seconds of quiet.
2:47 DIRECTV rep: Good evening, thank you for calling DIRECTV. My name is [name removed], who do I have the pleasure of speaking with today?
2:54 Caller: Hi. Just checking, are you a real person?
2:59 DIRECTV rep: Yes, I am.
3:02 Caller: Perfect. Thanks. So, I have a few general questions for you.
3:10 DIRECTV rep: Okay. Before we get started, can you give me the name on the account and the phone number, please?
3:16 Caller: Hmm. I'm not a customer with an account. I just have some general questions, if that's okay.
3:22 DIRECTV rep: Okay.
3:26 DIRECTV rep: Go ahead and ask, please.
3:29 Caller: Thanks. So, first, if a customer wants to cancel, can it be done over the phone? And what's the early termination fee?
3:39 DIRECTV rep: Okay, it all depends on the information on the account for the early termination fee. And if they want to cancel their services, they have to call in and cancel it by phone.
3:54 Caller: Okay, good to know. And how does someone return leased equipment?
4:00 DIRECTV rep: It all depends on their equipment. When they disconnect their services, they will run their equipment to see if they have to return it or not.
4:08 Caller: Okay. And are there offers for customers who are thinking about canceling?
4:16 DIRECTV rep: It all depends on the account. We do have different, multiple different promotional offers.
4:24 Caller: Okay, that helps. Thank you. Bye.
4:29 DIRECTV rep: You're welcome.
The call ends.
How we got to a person at DIRECTV customer service #
- Call 800-531-5000. "Thank you for calling DIRECTV. Para español, oprima el ocho. This call is being recorded for quality assurance." Apart from the Spanish option, there was no keypad menu on either call.
- An AI agent answers. "Hi there. I'm Eva, DIRECTV's AI agent. How can I help you today?" You talk to it in plain sentences.
- Say "cancel service". It said "Got it" and asked for "the phone number associated with your DIRECTV service."
- Ask for a live agent instead. It said "Before I connect you with a live agent, I'll need to verify your account" and asked for the phone number again. When we said we didn't have it and asked for an agent, it said it would "gather a few more account details" and then connect us.
- It asks once more, then for an account number. "Please say or enter the phone number associated with your service, or if you don't know it, press star." Our caller stayed quiet, and it moved on to "the four to nine digit account number associated with your service."
- Say you don't have one either. Our caller said it didn't have an account number, wasn't a customer with an account, and needed to speak to a live agent.
- Choose satellite. It asked "Are you calling about your DIRECTV satellite or streaming service?" We said satellite. We didn't try streaming.
- Hold. "Please hold while we connect you to an agent. Your estimated wait time is about five seconds." A person answered about 15 seconds after the hold message started.
- The person asks for the account too. She asked for "the name on the account and the phone number." When we said we didn't have an account, she said "Go ahead and ask, please" and answered our questions.
So it took two refusals of the phone number and one of the account number before the AI agent asked which service and transferred us. On the first call we gave up after one.
What the person said, and what the AI agent said #
The two calls asked the same three things. The live representative's answers were shorter and less specific than the AI agent's:
- Cancelling by phone. The person: "they have to call in and cancel it by phone." The AI agent: "Yes, a customer can cancel their DIRECTV service over the phone." DIRECTV's cancel help page also describes an online route for some customers: "If you get your DIRECTV service over the internet (no satellite dish)", you "sign in and select "Cancel service"." We asked about satellite, so the two may not conflict, but we didn't test it.
- Early termination fee. The person: "It all depends on the information on the account." The AI agent: "up to $20 for each month left in their commitment." DIRECTV's cancel help page says only "If you have a contract, you may need to pay a fee for the number of months left on your contract", with no amount. So the $20 figure is still unconfirmed.
- Equipment. The person: "they will run their equipment to see if they have to return it or not." The AI agent: you "usually need to return any leased equipment, like receivers, remotes, and power cords, to avoid a non-return fee", by return kit or at "a FedEx Office location." The cancel help page says "Your cancellation support agent will guide you through what (if anything) you need to return," and "All you have to return is the box itself, power cord, and remote."
- Offers. The person: "We do have different, multiple different promotional offers," depending on the account. The AI agent: offers exist, "but the details depend on your account and situation," and "a live agent can review them with you directly."
How to cancel DIRECTV by phone #
Based on our two calls and DIRECTV's own pages:
- Call 800-531-5000 during business hours, Mon-Sun, 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM CT, according to DIRECTV's contact page.
- Say "cancel service" when the AI agent asks how it can help, and ask for a live agent. On DIRECTV's community forum, users in a thread about being unable to cancel service report the voice menu looping, and advise saying "cancel" to reach an agent. Our second call is one data point that it works.
- Give the phone number on your account if you have it. Both the AI agent and the person asked for it. We had no account, so we don't know whether giving it gets you to a person faster.
- Ask a person about offers before you confirm. The person said offers depend on the account.
- Ask about your fee and your equipment. The person said both depend on the account and the equipment, and gave no general answer.
What to have ready #
- The phone number on your DIRECTV account. The AI agent asked for it three times, and the person asked for it again.
- Your account number, four to nine digits, according to the AI agent.
- The name on the account. The person asked for it.
- Whether you have satellite or streaming. The AI agent asked before transferring us.
- How many months are left on your contract, if you have one, for the early termination fee.
The first call: what the DIRECTV AI agent said #
On our first call, 3 minutes 19 seconds, we asked the AI agent our questions directly and never reached a person. Nothing is muted and nothing is cut: no names or numbers were said that needed removing.
Jump to a moment:
- 0:15 "I'm Eva, DIRECTV's AI agent. How can I help you today?"
- 0:20 our first question: can you cancel over the phone?
- 0:40 "Yes, a customer can cancel their DIRECTV service over the phone"
- 1:03 "An early termination fee of up to $20 for each month left in their commitment"
- 1:29 receivers, remotes and power cords, a return kit or a FedEx Office location
- 2:00 offers depend on your account, and "a live agent can review them with you directly"
- 2:14 we say yes to being connected
- 2:30 "Please say or enter the phone number associated with your DIRECTV service"
- 2:37 "I don't have that. I'm just looking for general information"
- 3:07 the AI agent offers to connect us again, and we say no thanks and hang up
The AI agent answered each question itself, about 7 to 9 seconds after we asked, after a short filler line ("Let me check on that", "Let me look into that"). When it offered to connect us to a live agent and we said yes, it said "Got it", went quiet for about 9 seconds, then asked for the phone number on the account. We said we didn't have it, and it went back to answering itself and offered to connect us again.

The transcript follows the recording. "Caller" is the call4me agent. "DIRECTV AI" is DIRECTV's AI agent, which called itself Eva. No live person spoke on this call. Nothing is muted.
0:05 DIRECTV: Thank you for calling DIRECTV. Para español, oprima el ocho. This call is being recorded for quality assurance.
0:13 Caller: Hi, hello?
0:15 DIRECTV AI: Hi there. I'm Eva, DIRECTV's AI agent. How can I help you today?
0:20 Caller: Hi. I just had a couple of general questions about if a customer wants to cancel their DIRECTV service. Can that be done over the phone?
0:36 DIRECTV AI: Yeah, let me check on that for you.
0:40 DIRECTV AI: Yes, a customer can cancel their DIRECTV service over the phone. If you have questions about the process or what happens after cancellation, let me know what you'd like to know more about.
0:51 Caller: Yeah, what would the early cancellation fee be if they're still in a contract?
1:00 DIRECTV AI: Let me look into that.
1:03 DIRECTV AI: If a customer cancels while still in a contract, there's an early termination fee of up to $20 for each month left in their commitment. If you want to know the exact amount, you'd need to check how many months are left on the contract.
1:16 Caller: Oh, okay. And if they cancel, do they have to return their equipment? And if so, how do they do that?
1:26 DIRECTV AI: Let me check on that.
1:29 DIRECTV AI: If a customer cancels, they usually need to return any leased equipment, like receivers, remotes, and power cords, to avoid a non-return fee. The return process depends on whether you get a return kit in the mail or need to bring the equipment to a FedEx Office location. If you want details for a specific situation, let me know.
1:47 Caller: Oh, that's okay. Are there any offers for customers who are thinking about canceling?
1:56 DIRECTV AI: Checking on offers now.
2:00 DIRECTV AI: DIRECTV sometimes has special offers for customers who are thinking about canceling, but the details depend on your account and situation. If you want to know about current offers, a live agent can review them with you directly. Would you like to connect with someone for that?
2:14 Caller: Yeah, that would be great.
2:20 DIRECTV AI: Got it.
About 9 seconds of quiet on the line.
2:30 DIRECTV AI: Please say or enter the phone number associated with your DIRECTV service.
2:37 Caller: I don't have that. I'm just looking for general information.
2:47 DIRECTV AI: All right. I'll look into general offers for you.
2:53 DIRECTV AI: DIRECTV sometimes has special offers for customers who are thinking about canceling, but the details depend on your account and situation. If you want to know about current offers, a live agent can review them with you directly. Would you like to connect with someone for that?
3:07 Caller: No, that's okay. We don't have an account. But yeah, that's all I needed. Thank you.
3:15 Caller: Bye.
The call ends.
What we didn't test #
- The streaming route. We chose satellite. We don't know where streaming goes.
- Giving an account phone number or account number. We had no account.
- Saying "representative" or pressing 0. We asked for a "live agent" in plain sentences.
- Cancelling online or by chat. directv.com lists a Chat Now option, and its cancel help page describes an online cancel for internet (no satellite dish) service. We only called.
- Whether the answers match your contract. The AI agent spoke in general terms ("usually", "up to", "sometimes"), and the person said everything depended on the account.
How we made these recordings #
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) tells it what to get done and it makes the call. Both times, the brief was to reach a DIRECTV customer service representative and ask three general questions: can you cancel by phone and what's the early termination fee, how does leased equipment get returned, and are there offers for customers thinking about cancelling. It was told not to give account details or change anything.
On the first call it didn't fully follow its brief. Its instructions were to ask for a representative if the line asked for an account number, and to ask what someone without an account should do if the line would only help account holders. Instead, after saying it didn't have the account phone number, it turned down the AI agent's second offer to connect it and ended the call.
For the second call we changed the brief. It said to say "cancel service" when the AI agent asked why we were calling (the tip from DIRECTV's forum), to say yes to every offer of a live agent, and, if asked for the phone number on the account, to say we were thinking about cancelling but wanted to talk to an agent first. That's what it did, and after it said it had no phone number or account number, the AI agent asked satellite or streaming and transferred it. One thing it didn't do: at 1:31 the AI agent said "if you don't know it, press star", and our caller said nothing for about 8 seconds instead. The AI agent moved on to the account number question anyway.
Have your agent make this call #
If you use call4me, paste this into your agent:
Call DIRECTV at 800-531-5000, between 8 am and 9 pm Central. An AI agent will answer. Say "cancel service" when it asks how it can help, and ask for a live agent. If it asks for the phone number or account number on my account, give it [the phone number on your DIRECTV account / your account number]. If it asks whether this is about satellite or streaming, say [satellite / streaming]. Accept every offer to connect to a live agent. Once a person answers, ask about my early termination fee, whether I need to return my equipment and how, and any offers for customers who are thinking about cancelling. Write down exactly what they say, and don't confirm a cancellation until I approve it.
