ServiceOntario phone number: reaching a person about a suspended licence
A call4me customer's assistant called ServiceOntario twice about a suspended driver's licence and a licence plate that didn't renew, plus Toronto Court Services once in between. Here is the voice menu, what got through to a person, what the representatives would and wouldn't say, and all three recordings.
The short answer: the ServiceOntario phone number is 416-235-2999, or toll-free 1-800-387-3445. For TTY, it's 416-325-3408 or toll-free 1-800-268-7095. ServiceOntario's contact page lists all four and says: "Our call centres are open Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m." That's the ServiceOntario contact number our customer's assistant dialed, and the voice menu on the line says the same: "A representative will be available if needed, between the hours of eight thirty AM and five PM, Monday to Friday." So ServiceOntario hours by phone are weekdays only.
A voice system answers first, not a person. Two ways got through to a representative:
- Say the whole problem in one sentence. On October 13, 2026, "I'm calling about a suspended driver's licence and a licence plate that didn't renew" went straight to the transfer message. A representative answered 2 minutes 7 seconds into the call.
- Or say "representative". On October 14, saying only "suspended driver's licence" got a recorded answer about renewing an expired licence. Saying "representative" right after that transferred the call. A representative answered at 2:27.
Both transfers play a survey offer (press 1 if you want it, otherwise wait) and a recorded notice about respectful conduct, about 45 seconds in all, before the person picks up.
What ServiceOntario representatives told a call4me customer's assistant about a licence suspended for unpaid fines, and how to pay the reinstatement fee:
- They won't open your file unless you're on the call. Both representatives asked whether the licence holder was there and declined to go further without him. The second one took the licence number and name, then said: "the card holder is currently not with you, and there is no way for me to confirm."
- You pay the fine plus a reinstatement fee. The second representative said the reinstatement fee is $281. Ontario's reinstatement page lists the same "$281 reinstatement fee" and says you must pay any outstanding fines first.
- "It is valid right away" once the fine and fee are paid, according to the first representative.
- Any ServiceOntario location can take the payment in person, according to both representatives.
- Online payment got two different answers. The first representative said you can pay online if you have the suspension number from the suspension letter that's mailed to you. The second said usually not, once a reinstatement fee is on the account, and pointed to a branch instead. The reinstatement page says the fee can be paid "online or in person at a ServiceOntario centre".
- A plate won't renew automatically with unpaid fines on file. Once they're paid, "the easiest way to do that is actually to renew the license plate," and the renewal asks you to pay what's outstanding.
What the calls established
| Question | What the calls established |
|---|---|
| Number dialed | 416-235-2999, ServiceOntario's published number |
| Route to a person | One sentence describing the problem, or "representative" after the voice system answers |
| Time to a live representative | 2:07 on October 13; 2:27 on October 14 |
| Discuss a specific record with an assistant? | No, on both calls; the licence holder had to be present |
| Reinstatement fee for an unpaid fine suspension | $281, per the second representative and ServiceOntario's website |
| What clears the suspension | The unpaid fine plus the reinstatement fee, unless the court outcome removes the fine |
| Where to pay in person | Any ServiceOntario location |
| Pay online? | Conflicting: yes with the suspension number (first call); usually no (second call) |
| When the licence is valid again | "Right away" after paying (first call) |
| Plate that didn't renew | Renews once fines or tolls are paid, by renewing the plate yourself |
| The ticket behind the suspension | From Toronto Court Services, not ServiceOntario (see below) |
Finding the unpaid ticket: Toronto Court Services
ServiceOntario wouldn't say which ticket caused the suspension. So on October 14, nine minutes before the second ServiceOntario call, the assistant called the City of Toronto's court services line, 416-338-7320. The City's unpaid fines page gives that number for the Court Services Collection Unit ("please press four for collections") and warns: "Your driver's licence could be suspended for certain offences (there is a fee for reinstatement)."
Its menu offers press 3 for a call centre representative ("please have your ticket and or driver's license ready") and press 4 for anyone contacted by a collection agency. The recording doesn't show which key our caller pressed. A representative answered at 2:54.
Unlike ServiceOntario, this office looked the record up for the assistant, using the licence number, the name and a date of birth. The representative said:
- The licence is "currently suspended" because of one ticket with an outstanding payment. She read out the case number (muted in the recording).
- The amount owing was $458, and it was payable online.
- There was no record of the ticket the customer expected. The customer thought it was a June 2026 handheld phone ticket. The representative found two Toronto South cases from August 2025 instead, one paid and one with a balance.
That's what the assistant then took to ServiceOntario.
What these calls did not settle
- Nothing was paid, and the licence wasn't reinstated. These were information calls.
- No suspension number. ServiceOntario didn't read any record, so the suspension number, an itemized total and any other requirements on the file were never confirmed.
- The online payment question is open. The two representatives contradicted each other. Whether the court case number alone works for paying online was never answered.
- The $281 was suggested by our caller. The second representative confirmed it, and the website lists it, but the assistant asked "is the reinstatement fee two eighty one" rather than asking what it was.
- What to bring to a branch wasn't answered. The second representative's reply moved on to medical suspensions for commercial drivers, and the call ended from the customer's side while she was still speaking.
- No written authorization route. The assistant was meant to ask how a licence holder could authorize someone else to call. The call ended before that came up.
- Whether plate renewal was blocked by this ticket, or by tolls or insurance, wasn't checked.
Listen to the calls
Three complete recordings with original voices and timing. Silences cover the customer's name, driver's licence number, date of birth, licence plate, the court case number, a branch address and the representatives' first names. Nothing else is muted or cut. The second ServiceOntario call keeps about a minute and a half of near silence while the representative checked the file.

The ServiceOntario phone tree, step by step
This is the menu as it played on October 13 and 14, 2026, calling 416-235-2999.
- "Thank you for calling ServiceOntario. Bonjour." Then: "For service in English, please stay on the line. Pour obtenir des renseignements en français, appuyez sur le deux."
- A renewal message. "To learn more about online renewals, appointment booking, locations, or to set up renewal reminders, visit Ontario dot CA slash ServiceOntario, or stay on the line."
- "Welcome to our new system. It responds to your voice. Just ask a question. We won't ask for any personal information, such as your name, date of birth, or card numbers." Then the hours, a recording notice and "How can I help you?"
- Say what you need, in a full sentence, or say "representative". A short answer like "suspended driver's licence" can get a recorded reply instead (see below).
- Survey offer. "If you would like to participate in a short satisfaction survey immediately after your call, press one now. Otherwise, please stay on the line."
- A recording and conduct notice, about 30 seconds.
- A representative. "Thank you for calling ServiceOntario. My name is [name]. How can I help you?"
Things that don't work
- Saying "suspended driver's licence" on its own. On October 14 it got a recorded answer about expired licences ("If your license has been expired less than one year, you can renew your license online") instead of a transfer. "Representative" worked right after it.
- Calling for someone else. Both ServiceOntario representatives declined to look at the record without the licence holder on the line, even though the assistant said he'd authorized it.
ServiceOntario license plate renewal after unpaid fines
The first representative said: "the province recently introduced automatic renewal of license plates. So as long as your vehicle is insured and you have no outstanding fines or tolls your license plate will automatically renew." Once fines or tolls are paid, "that does renew the license plate right away as well," and the renewal "will ask you to pay any outstanding amounts."
Ontario's plate renewal page agrees on the conditions ("you must have valid insurance and no outstanding fines or tolls") and adds that once those are resolved, "you must renew your licence plate manually." So for a ServiceOntario plate renewal blocked by a defaulted fine, plan to pay it and then renew the plate yourself.
How these calls were made
call4me is a phone for your AI agent: your agent tells it what to get done, and it makes the call. The customer's brief was information only: no payments, no record changes, no booking, and don't ring the customer in.
A few things to know about our side:
- It said "two eighty one" first. The fee came from the customer's brief. The representative confirmed it, but the assistant led the question.
- It gave the licence number and name when asked. The brief allowed identity details only if a representative asked for them to find the record. On the second ServiceOntario call the representative asked, then still wouldn't proceed without the holder.
- The call ended before the last two questions. What to bring to a branch, and how to give written authorization, were never answered.
Have your agent make this call
ServiceOntario wanted the licence holder on the line. So if you set this up with Claude Code or Codex, have call4me ring you when the representative asks for you. Your phone rings, and you press 1 to join. This is a suggested brief, not the one the customer used:
Call ServiceOntario at 416-235-2999, weekdays between 8:30 am and 5 pm Eastern. When the voice system asks how it can help, say "representative". When a representative answers, explain that I'm calling about my suspended driver's licence and a licence plate that didn't renew. When they ask to speak to the licence holder, ring me so I can join and confirm my own details. Ask for the suspension number, the total to reinstate (fine plus the $281 reinstatement fee), whether I can pay it online, and whether my plate will renew once it's paid. Don't pay anything or agree to any change.
If you don't know which ticket caused the suspension, call Toronto Court Services at 416-338-7320 first, or the court office that issued the ticket. For another court line we've called, see the Marina traffic court guide. For another government phone tree, see the Social Security phone number guide. You can also hear these calls on the examples page.

2:07 Representative: Thank you for calling ServiceOntario. My name is [staff first name muted]. How can I help you?
2:11 AI agent: Hi [staff first name muted], I'm Jordan, [customer name muted]'s assistant. I was trying to find out why [customer name muted]'s Ontario driver's licence is suspended, why his licence plate didn't renew, and what he needs to do to fix that. He thinks it's maybe an unpaid handheld phone ticket from a while back.
2:29 Representative: Okay. Um. Is he there with you?
2:36 AI agent: Uh, no, he asked me to call and gather info for him. I can give you his details if you'd like to pull it up.
2:43 Representative: Okay. Yeah, I would need to speak to the licence holder to provide any information.
2:48 AI agent: Oh, okay, gotcha. Um, could you at least tell me, generally, how to look up a defaulted traffic fine and pay a reinstatement fee to get a licence back in good standing?
3:01 Representative: So if his licence is suspended, sounds like it may be suspended for unpaid fines. Um. You can pay the outstanding fine and the reinstatement fee online. You do need to have the suspension number to do that.
3:20 AI agent: Uh-huh. And where would he find that number?
3:24 Representative: Um. So usually when your licence is suspended, a letter is mailed to you, uh, notifying you of the suspension.
3:34 AI agent: Okay. Okay, and if he...
3:37 Representative: Um, if he does not have the suspension number, he would be able to, uh, pay the unpaid fine and the reinstatement fee in person at ServiceOntario.
3:49 AI agent: Okay. And would that be at any ServiceOntario, or does it have to be [overlapping speech; the saved call text reads "at the court that issued the ticket"]?
3:53 Representative: Any ServiceOntario, you would be able to do that.
3:57 AI agent: Awesome. And do you know how quickly the licence is valid again after you pay?
4:02 Representative: It is valid right away.
4:05 AI agent: Perfect. That's great. And just to check, for plate...
4:07 Representative: Okay, anything else I can help you with?
4:10 AI agent: Actually, yeah. So, for plate [licence plate muted] that didn't renew, is clearing the fine usually enough to make it renewable again?
4:20 Representative: Yeah, um, the province recently introduced automatic renewal of licence plates. So as long as your vehicle is insured and you have no outstanding fines or tolls, your licence plate will automatically renew. If there are outstanding fines or tolls, once you pay that, uh, that does renew the licence plate right away as well. The easiest way to do that is actually to renew the licence plate, and as part of that process it'll ask you to pay any outstanding amounts.
4:54 AI agent: Okay, great. That's super clear. Thank you so much.
4:58 Representative: Okay, anything else?
5:00 AI agent: Nope, that's it. Thanks again, [staff first name muted]. Take care.
5:02 Representative: Alright, um, yeah, I'm glad I was able to answer your questions and provide you with the next steps, so thanks for calling. If you chose to complete a survey today, you will be prompted to do so as soon as I disconnect this call, so please stay on the line. Have a good day.
5:16 AI agent: You too. Bye.

2:56 AI agent: Hi there! I'm calling on behalf of [customer full name muted]. He lost the ticket for an unpaid handheld phone offence and I'm trying to get his offence number and current balance.
3:07 Representative: Certainly, can you, uh, do you have their driver's licence number with you?
3:12 AI agent: Yeah. It's [driver's licence number muted].
3:15 Representative: One moment. Just one moment.
3:16 AI agent: Sure. Yep.
3:18 Representative: Thank you. [Representative reads back part of the licence number, muted.]
3:23 AI agent: [Driver's licence number read out in parts, muted, while the representative says "go ahead".]
3:41 Representative: I thank you. Uh, do you happen to know the offence date?
3:45 AI agent: It was June twenty, twenty twenty six.
3:50 Representative: Okay. Hmm. And this is for [customer name muted]?
3:56 AI agent: That's right. [Customer full name muted].
3:59 Representative: Thank you. Yes, okay. Um, hold me one second. Let me just see what I can find in the system.
4:06 AI agent: Sure.
4:14 Representative: So right now, I just see that there are two cases, uh, under his driver's licence number. Uh, but both of them are from August of twenty twenty five. Uh, so let me just check and see what I can find by searching his name. [Customer name muted]. Thank you.
4:44 Representative: Okay. Uh, would you happen to have his birth date, just so I can confirm?
4:51 AI agent: Yeah, it's [date of birth muted].
4:55 Representative: Okay, thank you. Yes, I do see it here, but I don't see any record of the tickets from June of twenty twenty six. Just hold me one second. Let me see. Yeah, I don't see any record of the ticket here. So I'm at a loss on how I can help you. Uh, just hold me one second, let me see if there's anything else in the system for you.
5:18 AI agent: Yeah, I appreciate it.
5:19 Representative: Nope. Yeah, there were just these two tickets from Toronto South. Uh, one of them has been paid for and one is, uh, there's still an outstanding balance, but that's not from June of twenty twenty six.
5:32 AI agent: Hmm. Okay. Would you be able to confirm whether there's any licence suspension on file?
5:38 Representative: There is. His licence is currently suspended. I didn't know whether to bring that up [uncertain; one transcription reads "I didn't know why I was looking that up"]. Uh, but yeah, so his licence is suspended because there is an outstanding payment, uh, for one of the tickets. I can provide you with that case number if you'd like.
5:53 AI agent: Yes, please.
5:55 Representative: Yeah, and as far as I can tell, this is the only outstanding ticket with any outstanding payment, uh, but this is the one suspending their licence. So it's [court case number muted]. And the outstanding amount for this is four hundred and fifty eight.
6:26 AI agent: Okay. And that amount is payable online?
6:30 Representative: Certainly.
6:33 AI agent: Great. Thank you for your help.
6:35 Representative: You're very welcome.
6:37 AI agent: Take care, bye.
6:38 Representative: Have yourself a good day. Thank you. Bye-bye.

2:27 Representative: Thank you for calling ServiceOntario. My name is [staff first name muted]. How can I help you today?
2:31 AI agent: Hi [staff first name muted], I'm [customer name muted]'s assistant, calling on behalf of [customer full name muted]. Toronto Court Services confirmed his licence is suspended for an unpaid Toronto South case, number [court case number muted]. The balance is four fifty eight. I'd like to know his suspension number and what's needed to reinstate his licence, as his authorized assistant.
3:03 Representative: Okay. Give me a minute.
3:09 AI agent: Yeah, no problem.
3:11 Representative: I'm going to require his driver's licence number in a second.
3:19 AI agent: Sure. Uh, his licence number is [driver's licence number muted].
3:24 Representative: Just a second. Okay, I'm ready.
3:28 AI agent: Okay. [Driver's licence number muted, read out in parts while the representative says "yes" and "please".]
3:42 Representative: Okay, uh, just so I want to be sure I have the same number you have. Can you go over the DL number one more time, please?
3:52 AI agent: Yeah, sure. It's [driver's licence number muted].
4:08 Representative: And what's the name, please?
4:12 AI agent: [Customer full name muted].
4:16 Representative: Is he anywhere around you, please?
4:19 AI agent: Uh, he's authorized this inquiry, but he asked me to handle the call on his behalf. Can I get the general reinstatement requirements and fees for this specific suspension?
4:37 Representative: Give me a minute.
4:39 AI agent: Sure.
[About 90 seconds of near silence while the representative checks, kept in full.]
6:13 Representative: Hello?
6:16 Representative: Yeah. I'm afraid I... I wouldn't have any way to be able to proceed on this DL, because the person, the card holder, is currently not with you, and there is no way for me to confirm. I'm afraid you might want to visit one of our ServiceOntario branches. I could make a booking for you, or I don't know if there is any other way I can be of help via the phone, but I wouldn't be able to confirm. If he or she was with you, it would have been easier, and it gives the authorization to go ahead. I hope you do understand.
7:11 AI agent: Yeah, totally. I understand if you can't share his file details with me. Um, can I ask some general questions then? Uh, for example, if someone has their licence suspended for an unpaid Toronto South fine, is the reinstatement fee two eighty one per suspension? And do they need anything besides paying that and the fine to clear the suspension and renew a plate?
7:35 Representative: You- usually, depending on what exactly why it was what must have transpired. Depending on what must have transpired, if and the duration, there's usually a duration expected for fines to have been paid. It's only when it's not paid within the stipulated time, or the duration expected, that a warrant, a reinstate warrant, their license being suspended, and to have it back, become inactive, that is when a reinstatement fee is being required. So, sometimes they would have fines. And they observe it or they get to know. Maybe they are being written. And they get to know that they have fines and they make payments or sort it out through the court or the parking municipal, then they make a resolution about it and move ahead either to pay or not to pay.
8:45 Representative: Within... So if all of this is done within the, within the very time, but couple of times, people... Because you have to... Sometimes you want to contest it, and because you have to go to, you have to go to the municipal, make phone calls, ask for follow up, and sometimes this changes wouldn't happen until days after. So I'm definitely from the date, from the date, the incident or had occurred, it starts counting. So, it's only after this period then for you to... Then license gets suspended, because there is no response.
9:29 AI agent: Yeah, I see.
9:29 Representative: Then to have it from been inactive to active, that's from been suspended to license back, that's when reinstatement fee is gets attracted, and it's 281 dollars. There is the cost of reinstatement.
9:47 AI agent: Okay, I see. And uh...
9:49 Representative: So it's usually when the when they want to regularize, it's usually the payment of the fine, plus the reinstatement fee at the end, except the court, the court verdict says nullifies it or grants them the victory not to pay. Then the reinstatement fee becomes the only payment to be made, and they become licensed back.
10:20 AI agent: Mm-hmm. And uh do you know if the fine and reinstatement can be paid online using that full court reference number even without the suspension number?
10:32 Representative: Usually, no. You, you usually visit any of our ServiceOntario branches because you wouldn't be able to make the payment once there is a reinstatement fee, only to, once there's a fine. You won't, you won't be able to renew or you won't be able to make any payment on the, on the account. So you'll be required to visit one of our ServiceOntario branches, where you get a prompt resolution, and next action would also be advised accordingly.
11:09 AI agent: I see. Okay. Uhh, what would they need to bring for that in-person visit, and can it be done at your [branch address muted] location?
11:21 Representative: Yes, usually all our ServiceOntario branches. It's going to be all that is required is will be... Sometimes, depend- like I said earlier, depending on the reasons why the... cost for the fine, or some, it could be required, it might not be any offence, it could be that they are within a particular age bracket, where they're or they have or they hold a particular licence. Take for example, it could be school bus, you are or a commercial truck driver. You're expected to have some tests done within stipulated period. For example, within two every two years. And if not, if, if the report, if the medical report is not on file within after the within the... two years. Like a doing like a renewal thing. You wouldn't, your license could would be suspended until the medical report is received. Then it becomes... re- stated.
12:42 Representative: So usually some... usually... that's, that's what happens. For exa- in such a case that I've just given, you don't, you're not expect, it's not necessarily a fine. It's just that you are within... Take for example, you should be, for you to have that, you, you would have turned 65 years old. So... the older you become, the more often you... for a commercial driver, you're going to be required to have tests done. So if you don't get it done within that time, it becomes, your license becomes suspended. And for you to have it, for it to make regularize, you have to submit the test, you must have gone to a physician, your vision and all the tests required was must have been done, and the report would be submitted, or and is uploaded, and once it's received, you become reinstated automatically because there was no fine. It's only sometimes when it takes time, and maybe in life happens, and some people would have [uncertain: "addresses" or "reasons"] to stop, and they stop becoming a commercial driver, it could be a process of one year, or sometimes six months, three months. You know, time had gone by, so in such cases, you might have attracted a reinstatement fee.
