Best Buy customer service number: how we reached a person

Call 1 888 237 8289 for Best Buy customer service. Its AI assistant answered our two returns inquiries first, then transferred us to people. Hear the calls and the requests that got us through.

The Best Buy customer service number is 1 888 237 8289. Best Buy lists it on its official contact page and support page. On our two recorded calls, an AI customer care assistant answered first. Explaining that we had a return question and asking for a live agent led to a transfer both times.

We called on October 24, 2026, at about 5:24 and 5:31 pm Central, using call4me. A person answered 4 minutes 19 seconds into the first recording and 3 minutes 15 seconds into the second. Those are the total times to a person, including the automated conversation and hold, not average wait times.

These were general inquiries for our Best Buy return policy guide. We did not have an order or account to change. We checked Best Buy's official contact pages again on November 2, but did not place another call for this article.

How to speak to a person at Best Buy

Here is the route that worked for our returns inquiries:

  1. Call 1 888 237 8289 and explain the issue. The greeting introduced an AI customer care assistant and asked what it could help with.
  2. Ask for a live agent. On the first call, the assistant asked whether we wanted general information or help with a particular purchase. We said it was a general question for a guide. For your own order, describe the actual issue instead.
  3. Answer its routing question. On the second call, it asked whether the issue involved changing an order, a return or something else. We answered that it was about a return.
  4. If you still need a person, say so. On the second call, the assistant offered information and a text link. We declined the text and repeated the request for a live agent. On the first call, it offered a transfer after it could not establish who could approve a late return exception.
  5. Stay on the line after the transfer. A recorded notice played, followed by hold audio. A person then answered.

We did not press a keypad shortcut. Our calls establish this voice route for return questions on the date tested. They do not establish the route for Geek Squad repairs, delivery changes, credit cards or every other department.

Listen to the faster transfer

This is the second October 24 call, about a return outside the normal window. A person answered at 3:15. The complete recording is about 6 minutes 55 seconds; the representative's first name is silenced in the already published version.

Time in recording What happened
0:03 Best Buy's AI customer care assistant greeted the caller
0:21 The caller asked for a live agent about a return exception
0:50 The assistant asked which kind of issue needed help
0:59 The caller said it was about a return
1:01 The assistant gave general return information and offered a text link
1:30 The caller declined the text and asked again for a live agent
1:41 The transfer announcement began, followed by a product notice and hold
3:15 A person answered

The representative said a store manager would have to consider the exception in person. Reaching a person by phone did not mean the phone team could approve the request. No return was started and no exception was granted.

Listen to the other support call

The first call reached a person after 4 minutes 19 seconds. Its full recording is about 6 minutes 28 seconds. The representative's first name is silenced in two places in the existing public audio.

The assistant first answered the general return question. When the caller asked who could approve an exception, it said it could not confirm that and offered a live agent. The caller accepted at 1:47, and the transfer announcement began at 1:54.

The first live greeting in that recording was:

4:19 Agent: Best Buy Primary Care. My name is [name]. How can I help you today?

Once a person answered, our caller asked about looking up purchases, refunds and starting an online return. It did not ask the representative the exception question that prompted the transfer. That gap led to the second call above. Both complete redacted transcripts are in the return policy article.

What should you have ready?

For a general question, tell the assistant that it is general. Our callers reached people without supplying an order number or inventing a purchase.

For your own purchase, gather the order or receipt and the question you need resolved. One representative said a purchase lookup used the customer's phone number, first and last name, and email. We did not test a real lookup, so the calls do not establish that those details always suffice or that every purchase can be found.

The AI assistant on the second call said it could not see an account associated with the calling number. We did not test calling from a number linked to a Best Buy account, and cannot say whether that changes the route or the wait.

Keep the request specific: identify the purchase or service, explain what happened and say what answer you need. If you are asking about an exception, ask who can approve it and whether you need to visit a store. Our return policy guide separates what the representatives said from Best Buy's published rules.

Phone hours and other contact options

Best Buy's contact page offers routes for orders and purchases, accounts, membership, product repair and support, stores, and other questions. It also offers chat. The support page has a help topic search and lists the same phone number.

Neither of those retrieved pages stated phone hours when we checked on November 2. Our two calls reached staff on a Saturday evening in October. That does not establish round the clock availability, holiday hours or the hours of another department. We did not test the chat service.

Have your assistant make your Best Buy call

Connect your assistant using the call4me installation guide, then give it the actual task and limits. For example:

Help me contact Best Buy about my purchase. Ask me what happened and what answer I need before calling. Verify the current customer service number on Best Buy's official website. Explain my actual issue to the phone assistant and ask for a person if needed. Bring back the answer, any unresolved questions and the next step. If the representative needs the account holder, ask me to join. Do not change an order, start a return, accept store credit, buy a service or schedule a repair without my approval.

Calls use your call4me credits. Giving the assistant a clear question helps it stay on task, but it does not guarantee a transfer, an exception or a particular wait. For more recorded routes, see the company phone directory and AI customer service calling guide.
